Velodyne to Showcase Industry-Leading LiDAR Sensors at AUVSIUnmanned Systems in Orlando

Industry Pioneer to Host Demos from UAV Solution Providers Phoenix Aerial Systems andLiDAR USA
Morgan Hill, Calif. (May 8, 2014) – AtAUVSI’s Unmanned Systems 2014 inOrlando – the biggest gathering inthe industry -- Velodyne will be out inforce, demonstrating its pioneeringLiDAR technology and welcoming twopartner providers who will show thattechnology in action. AUVSI kicks offon May 12 and wraps up on May15. Velodyne will display its flagship HDLproducts -- the classic HDL-64E andthe lightweight and compact HDL-32E. The HDL-32E is the sensor ofchoice for LIDAR measurements withUAVs, thanks to its light weight(1kg/2.2lbs) and the vast amount ofdata it can capture (~700,000 datapoints per second). Its 32-beam
approach minimizesshadows as the same pointsare being measured fromdifferent angles. Themultiple beam approachmeans that even when theUAV is shaking back andforth, at least one of the 32beams hits the desiredtarget. By contrast, with aone-beam approach, anyoscillation of the UAV couldleave gaps in the scanpattern. Joining Velodyne in Booth#615 will be UAV solutionproviders Phoenix AerialSystems (www.phoenix-aerial.com) and LiDARUSA.com. Phoenix Aerialwill demonstrate AL2, itslatest integration of the HDL-32E into a UAV platform. LiDAR USA will exhibit Snoopy, acompact mobile mapping solution built around the HDL-32E. The system includes GPS/IMUand data acquisition, and is small enough to be mobile for cars, boats, trains, and evengyrocopters. With more than 8,000 attendees and 550+ exhibitors from more than 40 countries, AUVSI’sUnmanned Systems is recognized as the leading event for the unmanned systemsmarketplace. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems (AUVSI) is the world’slargest nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to advancing the unmanned systems androbotics community. AUVSI’s 7,500 members worldwide come from governmentorganizations, industry and academia. AUVSI’s Unmanned Systems 2014 will include themost comprehensive collection of unmanned systems for every domain — air, ground andmaritime – and will welcome the industry’s top decision-makers. David Hall competed in the 2004-05 DARPA Grand Challenge using stereovisiontechnology. Based on his experience during this challenge, Hall recognized the limitationsof stereovision and developed the HDL64 high-resolution LiDAR sensor. More recently,Velodyne has released its smaller, lightweight HDL‑32E sensor, available for manyapplications including UAVs. Since 2007, Velodyne’s LiDAR division has emerged as aleading developer, manufacturer and supplier of real-time LiDAR sensor technology used ina variety of commercial applications including autonomous vehicles, vehicle safetysystems, 3D mobile mapping, 3D aerial mapping and security.
