Local Feature Homework club

On the outskirts of St. John is the

vibrant farming community of

Clozier, this small but vastly

spread community have came

together and formulated a com-

mendable project for the young

people of the community.

A homework club for all age

group from primary upwards has

been running in the area for over

2 years, but with a more in-depth

look , and from speaking to the

committed tutors, it is evident

that it is much more than just a

homework club.

The homework club was initiated

by Iva Williams which is the co-

ordinator of the club and Junior

Charles.

According to Williams, she said,

“The club started on the 10th of

October, 2011, and is presently

running under the group (Clozier

Development Committee). Chil-

dren are assisted with their

homework from school and are

given additional practice ques-

tions.”

Another tutor Joan Charles

stated, “I have dedicated myself

to assist students especially those

that have a low level of literacy

and numeracy. Children are

given assistance by professional

and certified assessors, which

would in turn deliver a report to

the tutors after assessment.”

She further said, “Our goal is not

only based on assisting students

with their homework but to build

the overall development of the stu-

dents.

For instance, recently the club has

introduced a personal development

program which basically is aimed

to develop a high level of confi-

dent and self upliftment within the

students.”

Thus far, the homework club has

an approximate of 30 students.

The procedures are that the stu-

dents are given a registration form

in which the parents has to fill out

stating their approval of the stu-

dent/s attendance to the classes.

Regional feature Dudley Thompson - Jamaica Hero

After his war service he returned

to Jamaica, joined the People’s

National Party and was among

the leaders who championed the

cause of the disgruntled return-

ing servicemen.

He was a graduate of Mico Col-

lege and his academic brilliance

won him the coveted Rhodes

Scholarship which he took up at

Oxford University, graduating

with an MA in Jurisprudence and

was called to the Bar at Gray’s

Inn in London in 1950.

While in England, Mr. Thomp-

son was a colleague of Messrs

The Hon. Dudley Thompson OJ, QC

who died in New York at the age of

95 was a genuine Jamaican hero

whose important contributions extend

beyond this island to the Third

World, Africa and the African dias-

pora.

Indeed, his years of service and advo-

cacy on behalf of the African people

influenced the Organisation of Afri-

can Unity to name him an ‘African

Legend’.

War veteran, lawyer, politician, gov-

ernment minister and ambassador, his

stature is not fully appreciated be-

cause he was a controversial politi-

cian associated with the Green Bay

operation in which he said “no angles

died”. However, he later issued a

public apology, a precedent which

others who have far more to apolo-

gise for should follow.

He was a Flight Lieutenant in the

from the colonies.

Counsel in 1963, established

his early legal practice in

Tanganyika (later renamed

Tanzania).

Fortunately, he chronicled

these exploits in his 1993

book: From Kingston to

Kenya. The Making of a Pan-

Africanist Lawyer. These

efforts were the start of his

life-long anticolonial, anti-

imperial struggle which char-

acterized his tenure as minis-

ter of foreign affairs during

the Michael Manley Govern-

ment of the late 1970s when

he defended Cuba’s right to

self-determination and the

countries of the Non-aligned

Movement.

Ambassador Thompson’s

Regional story Fast ferry service coming to Eastern Caribbean

A fast ferry service for the

Eastern Caribbean is to be es-

tablished, Transport Minister

Devant Maharaj announced .

Speaking at the post-Cabinet

news conference at the Diplo-

matic Centre, St Ann's, Maha-

raj said the company manag-

ing the service, Fast Carib-

bean Ltd, has agreed to pro-

vide 100,000 seats per year at

a special price of US$10 a

ticket but the average price for

citizens of Trinidad and To-

bago would be between

US$25 and US$35 a seat. The

ferry will also carry goods.

Maharaj said a Cabinet ap-

pointed team is in negotia-

tions with the company to set

up the ferry service.

He stressed though that the ini-

tiative was a private sector one

and that Government would be

putting no cash in the ser-

vice."This fast ferry proposal

which the team would be review-

ing proposes to launch the ser-

vice in 2012 and it would be

headquartered in Port of Spain,"

he said.

Phase one of the service will

offer trips to the islands of Gre-

nada, St Vincent and the Grena-

dines, St Lucia and Barbados.

Fast Caribbean Ltd, Barbados-

based consortium, will charter

from owners Montrose Global a

112-metre wave piercing cata-

maran similar to those operating

on the Trinidad and Tobago

route," Maharaj said.

He said a minimum capital start

up of US$12 million was

required for

the service. But he noted that the pri-

vate sector team was proposing to

raise some

said the

would help promote tourism, while

Trade Minister Stephen Cadiz said it

would bring cheaper freight charges

for businesses in the region. Govern-

ment first announced its intention to

have a ferry service linking Trinidad

and Tobago and the Eastern Carib-

bean in September 2011 and invited

proposals from suitable investors in

October 2011.

Five companies responded and Fast

Ferry Caribbean Ltd was selected.

The Cabinet appointed team charged

with reviewing the company's pro-

posals comprises the Permanent Sec-

retary of the Ministry of Transport,

the CEO of the Port Authority of

Trinidad and Tobago, a representa-

tive of the Ministry of Finance and a

Local story Gilbert responds to firing

Based on the reason for-

warded to me, the Prime Min-

ister decided to terminate my

appointment over a letter that

I penned, while serving as

Minister of Communications,

Works and Public Utilities,

and addressed to Harbor

Holdings’ Company.

That sort of letter, which is

standard operating procedure

of governments and do not

need cabinet approval, is de-

signed to keep potential inves-

tors interested in a country

while the executive body de-

cides on a course of action on

any particular matter.

Prime Minister Tillman Thomas

asked his excellency Sir. Carlyle

Glean, to revoke the appointment of

the Hon Joseph Gilbert as a Minister

of Government and he gave the fac-

tual basis for his action.

Disgraced Minister Hon. Joseph Gil-

bert responds to his sacking by Prime

Minister Tillman Thomas and I quote

“On Tuesday, January 19th, I received

a telephone call from Prime Minister

Hon. Tillman Thomas informing me,

and confirming that he had relieved

me of my portfolio as Minister for the

Environment , Foreign trade and Ex-

port Development.

We are all cognizant of the fact that

under the Constitution of Grenada,

the Prime Minister has the right to

decide who should serve in his cabi-

net and who should not.

It is Ludicrous for anyone to

suggest that any one minister

could give a license for some-

thing as the operation of a ca-

sino or any other gaming en-

terprise. In fact as I under-

stand it, not even the cabinet

can do this, since it will have

to be a matter for parliament.

The Honorable Prime Minster,

in his address to the nation

said he has always dealt with

his ministers with fairness and

even-handed. This statement

comes into questions when

one examines, for example,

the situation in 2010 relating

to the Sewang One World is-

sue.

As part of the Sewang Discus-

sions, the Prime Minister was

made to sign a memorandum

of understanding; an MOU

that cabinet was unaware of

Finance Minister Hon. Nazim

Burke embarrassed the Prime

Minister by telling the nation

that Prime Minster Thomas

should not have signed the

MOU. The Prime Minister

brushed aside the issue, with-

out as much as a word of rep-

rimand to anyone. We respect

his right to do so; but I’m just

pointing out the facts.” End of

quote.

Regional Story Panama Luis Posada Carriles extradition sought

A

Panamanian attorney recently ap-

plied to the Supreme Court of

Justice for the extradition to Pa-

nama of Luis Posada Carriles. In

2000, Carriles was convicted with

four other terrorists of an assassi-

nation attempt on the Cuban

leader Fidel Castro which, if per-

petrated, would have resulted in

the death of hundreds of people.

Silvio Guerra, one of the prose-

cuting attorneys present at the

trial of Posada, Gaspar Jiménez,

Guillermo Novo, Pedro Remón

and César Matamoros, reported to

the press that he had asked the

Supreme Court, in conjunction

with the Panamanian Foreign

Ministry, to present an extradition

order to the U.S. government.

Guerra recalled that this case be-

came "a mockery of Panamanian

justice," when Mireya Moscoso,

then president, pardoned the ter-

rorists a few months after they

were convicted.

The international record on the

four terrorists of Cuban origin

shows that other countries, such

as Venezuela, have also applied

for their extradition, but without

results, Guerra added.

"My concern is that the extradi-

tion application made by the Re-

public of Panama is also included

in this record, in the name of

Panamanian jurisdiction and via

Foreign Ministry channels," he

stated.

Posada Carriles, Jiménez, Novo

and Remón left Panama for the

United States on August 26, 2004,

1988 was one of his finest years

when he sang Bacchanal

calypso. His music crosses gen-

eration, nationalities and race.

Inside Sports New world record set as Grenadian sailor Sam Goodchild and co skipper Conrad Colman win 2nd leg of the Global Ocean Race

British-born Grenadian

sailor Sam Goodchild

and his New Zealand

co-skipper Conrad Col-

man have set a new

world record in the

Global Ocean Race as

they completed the

grueling 7,500 miles

second leg nonstop sail

from Cape Town,

South Africa to Welling-

ton, New Zealand.

Sam Goodchild, a naturalized Grenadian citizen,

has lived in Woburn, St. George, Grenada since

he was 4 months old. He comes from a sailing

family who inspired him to spend most of his life

in and around sailing boats. At present, he is a

full time racing sailor in the UK where he special-

izes in the very competitive and extremely de-

manding area of shorthanded racing, single-

handed or two up. He is among the youngest

holders of the Yacht master qualification, and in

2008 became the UK RYA Youth National Rac-

ing Champion.

Recognized as the youngest team in the double

handled class 40 race, the 22 year old

Grenadian and his 28 year old Kiwi partner,

crossed the finish line in first place on board

their Akilaria RC2 Class 40 Cessna Citation,

after 30 days, 22 hours, 20 minutes and 40 sec-

onds of adventurous sailing. In the process,

they netted the maximum 30 points for that leg

of the competition.

According to Sam’s father, Bob Goodchild, “I

have watched Sam grow in and on the sea.

From the age of five he was sailing himself

around the bay with his two year old brother

for crew. He is a complete natural with boats

and has impressed all who sailed with him. I

could not be more proud of him and his

achievements.”

The Grenada Board of Tourism joins with the

Marina and Yachting Association of Grenada

to both congratulate and commend Mr. Good-

child and his family and colleagues for this

major achievement. RUSH TV would also like

to add its congratulations to Mr. Goodchild on

his awesome achievement and wish him all the

best in all his future endeavors, Grenada is be-

hind you and we are very proud of you.

Money Report Micro financing in Jamaica

Operating out of its owner's

home, Henlon Brown Capital

(HBC) started as a micro financ-

ing business in December 2010.

"I'm coming from the financial

industry where I used to work

with credit unions. I would ask

myself 'Why is it that I must

have some money sitting in the

bank, when it can be used to my

advantage?" said Aidin Brown,

the company's president and ceo.

"I went ahead and started (and

we now) provide personal loans

to persons that are employed and

to an extent small business

loans."

The initial start-up, though diffi-

cult to source funding, was a lot

easier paper-wise said Brown,

the third nominee in the Ob-

server's new start-up programme.

"I am familiar with setting up

businesses, registering them be-

cause I help others to do this. I'm

in the business of consulting so I

just got the relevant documents

and that was it."

The company, which is staffed by

five people, provides loans from as

low as $1,000 to $50,000. He said

g iven t he ir c ircumstances

"Sometimes someone just wants

$1,000 to borrow for the day and

they can pay it back the next day

or the next two days."

HBC is preparing to expand its

operations as it moves into a per-

manent base in the Corporate Area

by month's end.

"The business has been doing

well. We see where we are able

to survive. Our challenge is the

amount of money that we lend

because some people want more

than the 50 (thousand dollars)

but we are not able to do that just

yet."

The future of HBC is not yet

drafted however; Brown said he

is "looking into bill payment and

some other areas." And even as

he overcomes his own business

challenges, he encourages other

young entrepreneurs to go into

business but only after thinking

it through.
