PAGE 12 AUTOWEEK Monte Carlo Continued From Preceding Page spun across the road in th e tight swerves around th e Piscine; he got going again bu t failed to notice Mass coming alongside and turned into him. With a clang both Ligier and McLaren lost chunks of their rear wheel rims . Joqhen's continued o hold ai r an d he continued on to the finish line, following fellow Hans. Bu t Jacques' tire had deflated an d when he reached the next corner he found ou t about it with another clang into the guardrail! That was two laps from the checkered flag. Th e flag came down none too soon, for ha d Lauda taken bu t another 8.03 seconds to complete hi s l as t easy lap th e race would have gone over the tw o hour limit prescribed in F - 1 regulations . Scheckter wa s a no t ba d ll-plus seconds behind, while Depailler di d well to keep his car with its leaning b a ck wheel on th e road only a little over a minu t e behind Lauda. A lap ba c k were Stuck, Mass and Fittipaldi. JUNE 12, 1976 Just ou t of th e points wa s Tom Pryce in seventh , bu t the way he got there was interesting. Earlier hi s teammate Jean Pierre J arier had hi s better handling Shadow comfortably ahead, but then about ten laps from the end there was just a brief, very light shower of rain. It hardly made visible spots on th e road, bu t most of th e drivers slacked off fo r a la p or two. In that couple of minutes Pryce flew up th e line, taking both Carlos Pace's oil spewing Brabham AHa an d J arier . Afterward as the two Shadowmen debriefed aboard someone's yacht, Jean Pierre turned to Tom and exclaimed, "My goodness, Tom, yo u are certainly quick in th e wet!" Monaco is-the Mediterranean, high-rise hotels, beautiful people, and, once a year, one heck of a motor race. Heretwo-time World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi boots his revised Copersucar up the hill towards Casino Square, with a view of part of the little principality ' s capital city in the background. Chris Mullen Pryce's eyebrows came together fo r a second, and then he said, "Wet? Uh, yo u mean it rained today?" Last on th e road was poor Chr i s Amon, wh o was still suffering the Amon Luck he'd suffered two weeks before when a wheel came off. He'd performed brilliantly well with the rebuilt Ensign in practice, actually being sixth at the end of the first day, and but fo r a se t of mis matched rear tires at theendofthe second da y which made th e car veer of f to on e side he might have stayed somewhere near that on the grid. But he started the race knowing full well that his right hand , sprained an d still swollen from the Zolder crash, was going to give out. After about half th e distance he simply had to give up ' , an d just soldiered on driving as best he could with one hand only-taking tw o bites at the wheel at th e Station Hairpin into unlucky 13th place . He was actually twelfth on th e road, last running driver, bu t Laffite before he crashed had done more laps . The greatest thing mechanical to come ou t of th e Monaco GP was the confirmation of th e competitiveness of th e six-wheeled Tyrrells . Th e greatest thing personally speaking was th e return to form of Ronnie Peterson; suddenly we ca n start calling him Superswede again. Good news , both items, as we turn to Sweden next where the ol d 007 Tyrrells Gunnar Nilsson trails Welshman Tom Pryce past the Hotel de Paris and into Casino Square. Pryce's position stayed static until a light rain fell, and then Tom started picking off those in front of him. and last year's 751 March were both very quick.
