Proserpine Vet “Calen Clinic” Update I have been in contact with Jess at Proserpine Vet and she has advised me that the first Clinic will be started on Tuesday 23rd February 2016. They were looking to hold the first one in January, but unfortu-nately the last Tuesday of the month fell on Australia Day. The clinic will be operating from the Calen RSL Memorial Hall. More details to be provided in the next issue. Thanks Bec
There will be no issue sent out in January. So at the beginning of February is when the first issue for 2016 will be sent out. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors and advertisers for your ongoing support. To the valued readers, thank you for your feedback and input, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. From Rebecca Andrade and family

Calen QAS Notes Well this year has just flown by and QAS Calen has been rather busy throughout the year and stats show we are pretty much the busiest 2 person station in the Mackay Whitsunday region closely followed by Finch Hatton. As with the festive season we wish to remind all road users to take care when travelling and drive to the current conditions. We have commenced the wet season with storms over the recent past and again road crashes have taken place. Also a timely reminder, as has been the case over the media from council, that everyone should have their cyclone preparations in order. Last week we had the first tropical low of the season situated in the Coral Sea. We have had the end of year QAS LAC breakup this week and thankyou to all who attended. I wish to publicly thank all members of the LAC for their tireless efforts to support us and indeed the greater community. It is much appreciated. So on behalf of OIC Shane Tucker and from myself, we wish everyone a safe and happy festive season. Have a very Merry Xmas and a prosperous 2016. Cheers Pete. Peter Hall ACP2 QAS Calen.
PINK DAY!!
What a Great Day our Pink Day was! Firstly we would to thank everyone who supported us in any way through
donations for our snap raffles or baking for the scrumptious morning tea this ensured the day was a huge
success. The highlight of the day was our Whole Food Cook Di Skelly-Heron who made Buckwheat Kasha which
was served for lunch, with a variety of salads from Di's recipe book. Marcella displayed a wide range of cosmetics from The Young Blood collection. Tanya offered
to paint fingernails throughout the day. Judy had user friendly cleaning products. Michelle had a display of all day
and night stay on lipsticks. Marg and Angelia the Breast Screen Nurses from the Base hospital presented a very
informative powerpoint presentation and a good questionnaire which they went through and explained each
question and the answers. Di Skelly-Heron is also a Art Therapist so she had everyone trying the Adult Colouring,
I am sure everyone enjoyed the experience and maybe the sales will go up this week at the Newsagency. The
other activity I had set up was a black and white 1.5m X 2m painting which everyone had an opportunity to apply
colour to it and sign their names. The result was beautiful and I have it hanging up in my art room making quite a
statement. The overall winner on the day was The Gluyas Rotary Can-cer Council Lodge in Townsville who have received $900
from our day, so pat yourselves on the back.
Thanks from Rhonda and Di
CALEN LOCAL AMBULANCE COMMITTEE On behalf of the Local Ambulance Committee, I wish to thank all the individuals and businesses who have supported the Calen LAC during 2015. Congratulations to the Calen Fishing Classic committee and the generous donors that make the event such a great fundraiser as well as social event for Calen and District. Our committee appreciates being able to take part in this worthwhile activity to raise fund for our ambulance cen-tre. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, stay safe and enjoy the Christmas Break. PUB NEWS with Clarrie & Marie Giess Sorry people......seems I have developed CRAFT disease (can't remember a flamin' thing). OOOps.....wrote a column last month and then promptly forgot to email it in !!! I have been notified by the Mayor's office today that they have completed some A3 spreadsheets of infor-mation that address the outcomes of the public meeting held at the hotel a couple of months ago. These sheets will be on display at the hotel so that people can see what is happening in our area through council. The gravel road up through Camerons Pocket has already been done and is in much better condition and they advised today that work on the new playground area in the local park will start soon. That's all positive news to receive just prior to Christmas. I'm also happy to report that they had asked me to apply for some fund-ing for a community Christmas event. I was only given a couple of days to put in the application but since then, the funding has been received and this event will now occur through the P & C at the Calen DSC. Billy Fishfingers (AKA Sawdust, Felazo, Bryan) is a happy man today. On Friday night, Bill picked the Joker to win himself the tidy sum of $6000.00. Nice little bonus before Christmas. Well done Bill...it's great to see a local patron taking out the big one. Our Goose Club continues to attract a good following on Saturdays with plenty of people walking away with prizes. You need to watch this space for some exciting things coming up in the near future with plans being made to open a Pub Cafe and Sarah (who was a function manager in a past life) is wanting to run a trivia night, a kara-oke comp and a fund raising cocktail night for the ladies (and gents if they so choose). Clarrie is looking for-ward to starting a Kelly Pool comp shortly and in the New Year, we will be starting up our Bingo mornings as well. Personally, I am getting tired thinking about it all but it is exciting to think we may be offering some interesting activities for the community. Very excited about Calen being chosen as one of the 36 “iconic” Queensland towns to adorn the labels on the new XXXX Origin brew. All cartons are mixed so only a few lucky people have found a Calen label so far. We don't even have one as yet so looking forward to seeing them. XXXX Origin is a brew especially made for Queenslanders and will be available through until February so here's hoping we get lucky and find a couple before then. Clarrie and I congratulate all the students who received awards at the recent awards night and also to all our young ones leaving school this year. Calen Hotel has been very happy to provide some of the Calen DSC students with an opportunity to gain some experience working in the hospitality industry and we wish all of them the very best for their futures. Thank you to Mt Ossa Rural, Teachers Aides Calen DSC, Calorie Coun-ters and Toastmasters for choosing our hotel for their Christmas functions. Thank you to our social club and to all those locals who have supported us during this past year. Clarrie and I would like to extend our very best wishes for the upcoming festive season and hope you all have a safe and happy Christmas.
PLEASE NOTE: Our kitchen will be closed December 25 – 29 .see our FB page for updates
Pindi Patch YEAR 5/6 CAMP AIRLIE BEACH – 17/18 NOVEMBER If the smiles on the Yr5/6 student’s faces were anything to go by camp was a blast!!! Bredl’s Wild Farm on Tuesday was amazing – a very down to earth, real experience. The weather was not too hot and our time at Big 4 Adventure Park was great, with all of us enjoying the pool and jumping pillows. The Reef Education Program on Wednesday was very interesting. Some student thoughts on camp: Savannah Vella Camp was awesome! I loved Bredl’s farm because I got to
hold lots of animals – echidnas, joeys, snakes, baby crocodiles, a koala and lizards. I also patted a deer, fed cassowaries and saw crocodiles. The Reef Education Program was cool too. We learned about the plants and animals in the ocean and the life cycle of the Red Emperor. We walked through mangroves in search of animals and plants and snorkelled in the pool.
Brielle Laird I loved how I got to cuddle a koala and let a carpet python sit around my neck. I thought Miss Marcy was going to have a panic attack when she held the python! I loved seeing the crocodiles – I was quite anxious when our guide sat on Brian, the biggest croc in the park.
Logan Halliwell I loved camp, it was awesome! I held a koala and a baby crocodile. We walked through man-groves. I loved snorkelling.
Brendan Hall The best part of school camp was when I got to hold 8 animals at Bredl’s Farm – 2 snakes, 2 lizards, a koala, an echidna, a small croc and a joey. Mr Bredl fed the big crocs while we watched. I also liked the snorkelling.
Sean Baronet My favourite part was Bredl’s Wild Farm. I got to hold two snakes and pat a deer. It was the best farm tour ever – WOW! Continued on next page
