Ruminations… I’m hearing from media folk that this election season is the most contentious ever. That’s saying something in light of the fact that politicians were once known to challenge one another to duels involving loaded guns and even more heavily armed egos. The most famous duel (1804) was between the sitting Vice President, Aaron Burr, and the former Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton died as a result of that duel. Burr was indicted on murder charges but the charges were later dropped or he was acquitted. But that duel was the end of Burr’s political career, such was the people’s animosity against him for the killing of Hamilton. Yet, still political pundits are calling this the most contentious election season ever. What sickens me the most about it all is that we the people are being played as pawns by a system run by greedy and egotistical tyrants whose only goal is to further their own attempts to accumulate power and wealth. Politicians find it so easy to apparently lift up the needs of the masses while at the same time gaming the system to make sure that they will be the ones who gain the most from their election. I used to think that governmental leaders and bank presidents and CEOs and power companies and other people in powerful positions were trustworthy folks. Now I wonder if there’s anyone sitting in a position of power that has not already been corrupted by the greed and power-mongering that have so thoroughly infiltrated their ranks. With the abysmal behavior from the candidates who seek political office these days, I am no longer surprised at what they will do or say to get elected. Hurting others for the sake of political gain is the name of the game these days. And it hurts my heart to see it and hear it. I’m reminded of the psalmists who looked upon their broken world and cried out for God to come into the chaos and reinstitute the desire for righteousness in every heart so that evil and disharmony might be overcome, once and for all. I long for that day to come, when righteousness is restored and compassion rules our hearts and souls. And even though at times it may seem futile, our only weapon against the greed and hedonism and power-mongering that is so rampant in our society today is to hold steadfast to what we know to be the greater truth - that, in the end, love and compassion will win and anger and greed and hostilities will be washed away. History has proven time and time again that evil and hostility and war only beget more evil and hostility and war. The only power that can rid the world of such horrible things is the power of love. Love alone can conquer an enemy, and it does so by taking away an

enemies will to fight. You don’t go to war with people whom you know and love as brothers, as sisters, as family. So to you good people of Calvary I say this: Remember whose son you are. Remember whose daughter you are. Remember the family to which you belong. Remember the one who is, alone, our master and our redeemer. Remember that simple acts of love have been known to start revolutions that have changed history. Dare to believe that love changes things by first changing hearts, and once let loose in the world, who knows how far the love you set free might travel. I am praying for God to step into our world and steal away this madness, knowing that one day God will do exactly that. Until then, I guess God will just have to come in through us. Come, Lord Jesus, come… in me… in us… in us all… come.
With love…
Pastor Wayne

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, Please mark your calendars for the next live webcast, “Ecumenical and Interreligious Witness on the Eve of the Reformation Anniversary,” on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. CDT. As Lutherans, we have 499 years of history, but on this day we will explore:
What was the Reformation, and what does it mean for Lutherans and ecumenical partners?
What is “Declaration on the Way,” and why is it significant for Lutheran-Catholic relations?
What might ecumenical and interreligious relationships look like in the future, and what does this mean for our faith community?
Tune in to the live webcast on Oct. 27 by visiting ELCA.org/webcast, where a link to the recorded video will be made available after the broadcast. A live stream also will be available at Facebook.com/Lutherans. If you would like to submit a question to be considered during the live webcast, please send it to [email protected] and provide your name and your congregation’s name, city and state. Check our website for future information concerning our participants and selected resources. We also invite you to participate and join the conversation by using #ELCAwebcast on social media.

Re: Lisa Perdue’s resignation
Dear Calvary family,
After 18 plus years of faithful and dedicated service to this congregational family, our organist and choir leader, Lisa Perdue, has decided it's time for her to begin her next chapter in life. Her letter of resignation was received by our church council at Sunday's meeting. Lisa's last Sunday in her capacity as organist/choir leader will be November 6 of this year.
Like you, I will miss Lisa's dedication to her worship leadership. I have shared with Lisa on a number of occasions how appreciative I have been of her deep commitment to her task and with how willing she has been to accept the last minute changes that I have often presented to her on Sunday mornings. In the past I have worked with church musicians whose self-centered demeanor held the whole congregation hostage. All of us here at Calvary have been spoiled by Lisa's compassionate leadership. I have no doubt that Lisa will long be remembered as one of the greatest gifts this Calvary family has ever received.
As for what happens next, the council will explore options for finding Lisa's replacement. Finding someone who has the gifts of musical leadership in the church setting is not easy. Add to that the difficulty of finding someone who is willing to work most every Sunday of the year, plus holidays, and you can begin to see just how few people there are out there who are willing to serve as church musicians. While we may find someone who is willing to accept the position in much the same way that Lisa has filled it, chances are that we may employ a number of folks who will agree to work a set number of Sundays throughout the year, at least for the short term if not longer. Feel free to share with me or with Ron Corriher the names of folks whom you feel may be interested in interviewing for the position.
Lastly, Lisa is a member of this congregation and will now shift from her position as our worship musician to a "pew-sitting" member. She looks forward to sitting with her family during worship, something she hasn't done much of in almost two decades. As people who love Lisa dearly, I would ask you to please be mindful of what you say to Lisa in the coming weeks/months. While Lisa is looking forward to her new life as one who is freed from her Sunday morning commitments, she is also sad to leave her position. She has loved working with the choir and she has loved serving this congregation with her musical gifts. Realizing that you may say such things out of love and appreciation for Lisa, please try not to say things like, "We're so sorry to see you go. Are you sure you won't reconsider?" or "I don't know what we're going to do without you." Hearing such comments week after week, although well-meaning, will
simply make Lisa's resignation more difficult for her to bear since she will remain a worshiping member of Calvary. Instead, tell Lisa how much you have appreciated her years of dedicated service and wish her well as she begins this new chapter in her life.
As we heard in our epistle reading from last Sunday’s Homecoming worship service, God is faithful. We have no reason to doubt that, now, nor in the future. As I thank God for sharing Lisa Perdue and her wonderful gifts with us, I now thank God for the person or persons God will send our way to aid our worship.
Sincerely, Wayne S. Cobb, Pastor

Meals On Wheels Of Rowan, Inc. PO. Box 1914 704-633-0352 Salisbury, NC 28145-1914 [email protected]
Dear Friends, August 2016 I am writing to you on behalf of the Meals on Wheels of Rowan board of directors. In December, we sent a similar letter to you. This letter is to remind you of our shared concerns and the continuing needs of our homebound recipients. Our missions are similar, visiting the sick and feeding the hungry in our community. I am asking that you budget some portion of your charitable spending or missions account next year to help us serve the homebound who are in most need of a nutritious meal and a visit. Your support is critical to help us “fill the gap” so we can continue providing meals to those in need. Currently the cost of each meal we purchase is $4.35. Some of our clients can afford to pay us in full, some can pay a portion, but many struggle t pay anything at all. On average, we are currently collecting less than half, $1.98 per meal from meal recipients. As you can see, this is not a sustainable financial model for any organization. Our efforts writing grants, holding fundraisers, and soliciting donations continue but, as you can image, it’s increasingly difficult to fund this effort properly. We are reliant on our churches for continued services. Today my note to you is to request consideration in your 2017 church budget for Meals On Wheels of Rowan. Planned, purposeful giving on your part would allow MOW to more effectively serve this essential role in our community. We’d like the opportunity to come share with you more about our services. I’ve enclosed an informational brochure with our contact information. (See bulletin board.) Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
