I remember tossing and turning, replaying that homerun over and over in my thoughts as I lay there in bed trying to fall asleep. But I couldn’t, and I still remember how odd it felt to see the sunlight peeking through the blinds after a night in which utter joy refused to let me sleep. That person was a person who could always be counted upon to do the right thing, a person who lived a life of deep compassion for all the people around him or her. Whenever I met such a person while with my dad, I could feel the love and warmth from this stranger by and with the way he/she welcomed me and looked upon me lovingly as if the he/she felt honored to meet me. Ruminations… Souper Bowl Sunday

I’ve only played on one championship team in my lifetime. I was the shortstop on the 1967 Rowan County Little League baseball regular season and tournament champion St. John’s Lutheran team. Fifty years ago it happened, but I can still feel the joy and the excitement of receiving that trophy and being crowned a champion. The apostle Paul calls us ambassadors, another word to describe people who know that their calling is to be sent into the world to represent and, if need be, fight for the rights and well-being of others. A champion is someone who cannot help but give their love away. In 2 Corinthians 5:20, Paul claims that “we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us.” And the appeal that God is making through us is that we be champions for Christ in our world, people who stand and fight, if need be, for those who have not received the honor and dignity they deserve in their lives. Such is the world of anyone who dares claim the title “Christian” as his or her own. A champion will arise this coming Sunday night, either a Falcon or a Patriot. It’s only a football game, a momentary diversion from our lives that are filled with so many concerns that are so much more important than a football game. But yet, still, there is something to be gained in the battle that will take place in Houston on Sunday. The battle will be fought by two teams of men who have sacrificed everything in pursuit of the crown they fight for. For the course of this football season, these men will have given everything they have had to give in hopes of reaching their dream – to be champions. The efforts and sacrifices they will have made in pursuit of their dream are admirable. Such effort and dedication is a reminder that we all have battles to fight that require our all if we are to achieve our dreams. As champions for Christ, Jesus asks that we be “all in” in our efforts to win the world for the Father. And we win this world for the Father through our acts of love that share the Father’s love with those who most need it. So, this Sunday, let’s remember to bring a gift for the hungry and hurting, a small token of our love for Christ and for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Please try to bring some non-perishable food items with you when you come to church. We’ll make sure that they get into the hands and hearts of people who need them – into the hands and hearts of people who need us to rise up and become champions for Christ. Thanks in advance for your willingness to help others. It’s never too late to become a champion, and how wonderful it feels when we do…

With love and appreciation…

Pastor Wayne

Please bring non-perishable food items THIS SUNDAY to share with the hungry folks in our community through the Souper Bowl of Caring! This is a very worthy cause that Calvary participates in each year! Mark your calendar to help Calvary help make a difference in the lives of Jesus’ children!

Pray….for our family, our friends & all of God’s people

(Please inform office of any additions or change in status)

By your power, great God, our Lord Jesus healed the sick and gave new hope to the hopeless. Though we cannot command or possess your power, we pray for those who are need of healing. Mend their wounds, soothe their fevered brows, and make broken people whole again. Help us to welcome every healing as a sign that, though death is against us, you are for us, and have promised renewed and risen life in Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

2016 Annual Reports, Monthly Reports & 2017 Directory

Please turn in your Annual Reports by the end of February! Feel free to email these

to: [email protected] or [email protected]. Last year, I was unable to produce an Annual Report because I only received 1 report!

Chairpersons: Please forward your members list & "cc" me on your monthly reports.

If the Council Minutes read “attached” about your committee, I don’t actually have a copy of your minutes to add to the records.

Please note that I may not see the Council Meeting Minutes before they are actually

approved & therefore may not have up to date additions/changes/etc., to assemble accordingly in the newsletter. If you have upcoming events, please be sure to let me know, I’d rather be told twice than not have accurate information.

Please check your address, phone, cell, email, etc., & report any changes by the end

of February! I would also like to have birthdays & wedding anniversaries!

Thanks! Love to all, Nise
