2018 TOOHEYS NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE
ROUND 4
MATT'S MESSAGE ceo matt harris
Heading into week four of the 2018 Business Plaza Cup the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs are the surprise competition leaders after they continued their unbeaten run with another victory last weekend. A last gasp win to Macquarie also ensured that the Scorpions maintained their perfect start.
Results from week 3 saw Kurri Kurri out enthuse Lakes United while a sideline conversation from Macquarie snatched victory from South Newcastle to continue the Lions winless start to the season. In the third Saturday game Central Newcastle found form to convincingly defeat the previously unbeaten Maitland Pickers. Sunday?s match-up provided a boil-over with Cessnock securing a strong win against West Newcastle at Harker Oval.
Once again results this season have shown that on their day any team is capable of victory which adds significant interest to this week?s match-ups. On Saturday Macquarie will look to continue their unbeaten run when they host Maitland at Peacock Field. The Pickers were brought back to earth last week at the hands of the Butcher Boys and will be keen to make amends. Also on Saturday Cessnock will aim to add to their round 3 win when they battle Lakes United at Cessnock Sportsground.
Sunday?s matches have Central Newcastle v ladder leaders Kurri Kurri and West Newcastle travelling to Townson Oval to battle arch rivals South Newcastle. The Lions are the only team yet to pick-up a win and will face a Rosellas squad looking to find some consistency. This match will be the BarTV match of the round and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League).
Congratulations to the players selected in the two Rebels squad which were announced on Monday. The Phil Williams coached senior team will tackle a Ron Massey representative squad on Friday 1 June at Maitland Sportsground. The 22-man Emerging Rebels squad, under the guidance of premiership wining coach Adam Bettridge, play against a Penrith under 20 development squad on Saturday 9 June. The venue for this fixture will be confirmed in the coming days.

KURRI KURRI BULLDOGSMother Nature put on a glorious show on Saturday, the sun was shining, birds were chirping, the intoxicating aromas of autumn filled the air at the Sylvest er ?s Real Est at e spor t s ground. The day offered some very entertaining and willing football and a mixed bag of results for the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs.
The St at ion Hot el LLT went down in a close encounter, coach Gilmore lamenting the missed opportunities. He also went on to say that the ladies played a style unaccustomed to how they train, they seemed to be playing catch up football. With some consistency in key positions and a good week at training look for an improved performance this weekend.
The Mit chell Physiot herapy under 19?s played in the first of the double headers for the season, travelling to Cessnock to take on a strong Lakes united outfit. Heading into the break although the Bulldogs did not have any ascendancy for long periods of time a gritty effort saw them still in the game. Unfortunately the Bulldogs could not continue to hold the Lakes outfit at bay conceding tries late in the game.
The St at ion Hot el Open Grade continued with their rich vein of form, the game was in the balance at HT with ill-discipline keeping the opposition in the game. A composed second half by a squad that is able to harness their strengths saw them come away with a convincing win.
The Firest orm Reserve Grade faced the prospect of coming up against a desperate Lakes reserve grade team who had not won a game. The desperation shown by the opposition was too much, beating the Bulldogs to the punch right across the park. Michael Hugg, Jake Lambert and Liam Leggett amongst a few others were the best in a beaten sided.
The Firest orm Bulldogs were able to get off to great start with two early tries to the Reid Alchin, followed by Zeb Dunstan. The first half ebbed and flowed with both sides gaining momentum for periods of time, however to the faithful?s delight the Bulldogs went into the break with a 14-12 lead. The second half looked similar to how the first stanza was played, with both sides going set for set working for an opportunity to seize the momentum. After a smart kick from Mitch Cullen and a great chase from the Bulldogs to regather a Lakes defender committed a professional foul and was subsequently sent to the sinbin. The Firest orm Bulldogs were able to take control of the match and gain ascendancy eventually running out winners.
The match was followed by an evening of trivia hosted by the old boys, special thanks to quiz Master Adam (baby John Burgess) Collingwood for organising the night. Although shrouded in controversy after the quiz master?s side took out the championships a great night was had by all who attended.
A special mention to Mark snapchat Walker who turned 21 this week, many happy returns for the day Mark.
The Kurri Kurri Bulldogs family would also like to send love and condolences to ex Bulldog Ryan Walker for the sad unexpected passing of his mother Lou, Ryan you and your family are in our thoughts with love from the
Bulldogs family.

MACQUARIE SCORPIONS
PATRON: MR COL BURNS:
Congratulations to all the Scorpions players and Coaching staff for a wonderful achievement last weekend to come away with wins in all four grades against South Newcastle. The wins however were offset with serious injuries to Kyle Eather, Andy Sumner and Todd Hurrell with the three of them now on the sideline for lengthy periods. Everyone at the Scorpions wish them all a speedy recovery.
The First Grade win was very special with Todd, Andy and Kyle all suffering their injuries early in the game leaving only one reserve on the bench which was compounded by an injury to Brad Russell later in the game. The players dug deep in the second half and it was a piece of Matt Simon brilliance with 4 minutes remaining to take a chip kick from South 20metres out from the Scorpions line and run 80metres to score in the corner and Scott Briggs converted to give the Scorpions a 28-26 win. Player Auction points went to 3 Scott Briggs, 2 Randal Briggs, 1 Daniel Abraham.
The Reserve Grade continued on their winning roll with an emphatic 26-0 win against a very strong South Newcastle lineup. Player Auction points went to 3 Matt Geoffrey, 2 Jayden Rosberg, 1 Kye Hopwood in a great team performance.
The Open Grade also got back to their best with a hard fought win against South Newcastle to remain in the top three. Player Auction points went to 3 Malik Deyalou, 2 Zac Plummer, 1 Pat Sharkey.
The Under 19s managed to win their first game of the season with a fantastic 46-6 win over South Newcastle on the Friday night at Townsend Oval. It was only a matter of time until this squad delivered this type of game and let?s hope they can now go on with it for the rest of the season. Player Auction points went to 3 Willy Lockwood, 2 Jack Jordan, 1 Jason Edwards.
This week the Scorpions are at home to the very strong Maitland Pickers before next weekends break so it is vitally important for the Scorpion sides to come away with wins and maintain the momentum from the early rounds.

Now to Cessnock and in 1972 Cessnock were a powerhouse of the NRL whilst Lakes were rebuilding. On May 13 at Cessnock the Seagull` s tested the Goannas but finally succumbed 33-22. Famous Seagull` s who featured on this day included Ron Burgess, Wayne Cooper, Jimmy Campbell, Jeff McCloy, Roger McDonnell, Tony Shiels, Phil Newton, Sammy Hincks, John Brock, Lindsay Gailey and Ollie Renfrew. Les Hannah, Cessnock` s top halfback, would later join Lakes in the 1980` s.
Round 3 saw The Maitland Pickers head back home to the Maitland Sports Ground to take on Central Newcastle.
The U19?s kicked off the weekend with their first Friday night Double header at Townson oval and although they were defeated by a strong central side they were very impressive to keep the score line at 20-18. The Ladies were very strong in defense up against last years grand final contenders, but inevetably went down 16-8 to a very stroung Central outfit. Open grade remain undefeated and look to be a very impressive side this season with quality players across the park and with some younger guys getting the opportunity to back up after u19?s, they are not short on numbers or skill. Reserve grade and First Grade both walked away with disapointing results, 24-14 and 36-12 respectively, after going up against a ruthless Central newcastle side that were just to good defensively. They were worn down with penalty?s and will be looking to correct their mistakes this week.
Off the field it was a very successful day with the Maitland Pickers Joining the Tackle Against brain cancer for the Mark Hughes Foundation. We were lucky enough to have ?The Chief? Paul Harrigan in the crowd watching the footy and he was more than happy to Don a beanie with the committee ladies and show his support for the Cause. (see our facebook Page For all Game day Photos).
This week The Maitland Pickers Will take On the Maquarie Scorpions. The Ladies League Tag Side will have a bye wich will see the following game time changes for the remaining 4 grades.

Open grade ? 12.15pm
