PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

It’s FAME week! I was so proud last night watching the opening night performance! If you have-n’t already secured your tickets I encourage you to try and get some for upcoming performanc-es. The culmination of an enormous amount of work and commitment from students, staff and parents is a fantastic performance.

This week we have been inundated with calls from local grade 4 & 5 students very keen to join our Active Minds transition program. These students will have the opportunity to participate in Secondary School life over a five week program and we look forward to welcoming them later this month.

Senior school careers and pathways counselling continues to be a priority this Term as we prepare for 2019. It’s always very rewarding to see young people and their parents/carers discussing all of the wonderful opportunities available to study at here at Rosebud Secondary College and Tertiary Institutions.

Last week our School Captains hosted a whole school assembly. During this time they facilitated a Q&A session with me. One of the questions was ‘What is your vision for RSC from a student perspective?’. I thought that this was a fantastic question and I enjoyed explaining that I want a school where students have a right and responsi-bility to have a voice in their learning and the culture of their school. I am proud to let you know that the SRC re-cently launched a ‘have your say’ campaign here at the College, encouraging their fellow students to share their thoughts and opinions on a range of topics. The survey link is on Compass and there are also many posters locat-ed around the school with the web address.

COLLEGE NEWS

GAMAGORI HIGASHI SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL VISIT Rosebud Secondary College has once again hosted staff and students from our Japanese Sister School, Gamagori Higashi Senior High School, at the end of last month. This partnership has been strong for 29 years and we were very happy to have them visit us again.

The Japanese students and staff visited all our Japanese language classes for a range of activities, from dancing with Year 7 and 8 students to exam conversation practice with our Year 12s. All students enjoyed meeting people from another country and it was great to see them to build their skills in intercultural ac-ceptance and understanding.

We had an exceptional group of host families this year who looked after our visitors with great kindness and warmth, all being very keen to show off the best of life in Australia. Our local communi-ty were also very supportive – we would like to thank the Enchanted Maze for their generosity.

There will be a study tour of Rosebud students

heading to Japan at the end of the term to visit

our sister school and tour the country.

STUDENT VOICE In 2018 Rosebud Secondary College has been working tirelessly on Student Voice and Agency. Initially it was based around the definition of what student voice meant to our students, then it’s evolved into actions. Our SRC have shown great lead-ership in being able to capture the views, concerns, and ideas from our student population through a survey which they manage. The SRC designed the concept and came up with the idea to create posters which they could put up around the school and each year level captain had to create an action plan on how they were going to get the word around.

Since our captains have launched this poster we have had a number of student use the link to voice their concerns but also to raise some ideas and share students achievements.

We are so excited to see our future leaders grow and learn about how to be a great leader in all facets in life.

OES NEWS

YEAR 12 OES ELP - ALPINE

The year 12 Outdoor & Environmental Studies class recently participated on their final Experiential Learning Program of 2018 to Falls Creek and the Bogong High Plains from the 1st to the 3rd of August. During this investigation students were able to study, first hand, the impacts of climate change, the benefits of green building design, investigate the habitat of the endangered Mountain Pygmy Possum, we visited Fitzgerald's Hut to better understand the historic relationship that the Mountain Cattlemen have with the high country and of course most of this was done on skis! Wednesday saw students brush up on their cross country skiing skills followed by a leisurely journey to the night’s campsite on Heathy Spur overlooking the Hydro Power dam - Rocky Valley Pondage. The weather was clear and the snow conditions were excellent. On Thursday we journeyed out into the Alpine National Park on a day excursion to the hut. We followed the downhill ski trail called the ‘Paralyser’ to get back to camp and it lived up to its name! Friday was a downhill ski day. Students chose to snowboard or ski for the day which was a fabulous way to end a great year of outdoor practical experiences for these students.

CAREER NEWS

VET news.

We are investigating some exciting new VET programs at our school for our students in 2019. We have been discussing these with students in L4L, Year 10 course counselling and in VCAL classes. In addition to the VET Sport and Recreation and VET Information, Digital Media and Technology classes, we are looking for expressions of interest in the following:

Year 9 Trade Taster program

This program is designed for year 9 students who are looking for an all day, hands-on alternative that can give insight into construction trades as a career option. Students would spend one day per week in this class and would focus on OH&S (including a white card program), construction skills and teamwork.

Cert II Construction Pathways

This program is ideal for year 10 students who are looking to earn a recognised industry qualifica-tion and prepare themselves for a construction related course in Year 11/12. This course can also contribute towards a students’ VCAL qualification. Students must be 15 to enter into this course.

Cert II Parks and Gardens SBAT (School Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship)

This is a 2 day per week program that offers the added benefit of paid employment. This train-eeship is ideal for students who enjoy working in the outdoors, thinking of horticulture or land-scaping as a career pathway or wanting to find out whether they are suited to the world of work. Students will work on projects here at the college and will work on their qualification at the same time. The usual expectations of an employer will apply and students need to show dedication and a strong work ethic. This course can also contribute towards a students’ VCAL qualification. Stu-dents must be 15 to enter into this course.

Cert II Hospitality - Front of house.

This course is an ideal way to develop customer service skills and pick up certification in Food Handling and Responsible Service of Alcohol. The Mornington Peninsula has vacancies in this work all year round and students who do this course will have a distinct advantage when applying for this sort of work. This course can also contribute towards a students’ VCAL qualification. Students must be 15 to enter into this course.

If any of these courses are of interest to you, please indicate by completing your application to accelerate form. If you have any questions, talk to careers staff for further information. Derek Kirk

Victoria Police Work Experience Program 2019

Applications for the Victoria Police Work Experience Program 2019 are now open!

The Victoria Police Work Experience Program provides a fantastic opportunity for secondary school students consid-ering a career within Victoria Police. Students are placed at police stations and department units where they will have the opportunity to observe and learn from our Police Officers, Protective Services Officers, Protective Custody Officers and VPS personnel.

Due to the limited number of work experience placements available, it is strongly advised that only students with a genuine interest in a career with Victoria Police are nominated for the program.

Key Dates: Applications will close 4:00pm Friday 31 August 2018. No applications will be accepted after this time. You will receive an email notification as to whether your nominated student was successful in obtaining a placement week commencing Monday 8 October 2018.

Application Process

Nominations are to be submitted through careers teachers only. Each school can nominate one student to partici-pate in the program for the year. Schools with multiple campuses across various suburbs may nominate one student per campus.

Applications will only be considered if all required forms are completed correctly and signed accordingly. The consent forms are available to download via the Victoria Police Work Experience Portal. These forms will need to be attached at the end of the application under the ‘Attachments’ section. When uploading these documents – please choose the ‘Self Assessment’ option for the document type. Selecting another option will not affect your application.

For more information regarding the program, please visit the Victoria Police Careers website where you can also download a frequently asked questions fact sheet.

Important Information

Please be aware that there has been a change in the application process from previous years. Applications for place-ments occurring during Terms 1 and 2 of 2019 are to be submitted during Term 3 of 2018. Applications for Terms 3 and 4 of 2019 will be submitted during Term 1 of 2019. We will provide you with an email update in early 2019 with more information regarding Term 3 and 4 placement arrangements.

Please note that if your student is unsuccessful in obtaining a placement for Terms 1 and 2, due to the popularity of the program and to ensure fairness to all students and schools, we will be allocating students to placements based on a ballot. Students names will be randomly selected and allocated to a nominated preferred police station/department unit.

Please be advised that a nomination of a student does not automatically guarantee a placement.

Applications are not to be submitted directly to any police station or department unit; no placements will be arranged outside of this program.

YOUR CHILD’S MOST IMPORTANT TEACHER

You are your child’s most important teacher What your child learns from you and other family members will stay with them throughout their lives. It doesn’t matter what your family looks like – you could be a single parent or belong to an extended family, your child learns through the relationships they have within your family. Most importantly, learning that they are valued and their world is safe and secure becomes the foundation for all the new behaviours, attitudes and skills your child will later learn. Whenever you spend time with your child, you are teaching Your child watches and copies what you do and say. This means you are teaching even when you’re unaware of it. As your child’s most powerful and important teacher you will also take on different roles at different times. You will ask questions and offer ideas. You will demonstrate how to do things and also be a coach (encouraging and motivating your child). You will be a source of knowledge about the world and how it works. You might also be learn and discover new things alongside your child. Learning is a social experience that can happen anywhere and at any time – at home, at the park, in the com-munity, as well as in formal settings. The trick is noticing when it is happening (or could happen) and making the most of those opportunities. What does this mean for me? • Value what you know about your child and don’t underestimate your importance and knowledge. Your knowledge is important to share with early childhood educators, practitioners and school.

• Your child learns from your behaviour, conversations and actions. If you want your child to be compassion-ate, how do you model being kind? If you want your child to respect the environment, what do they see you doing? If you want your child to listen, first listen closely to them.

• Don’t try to be a formal ‘teacher’. Your child will have plenty of them as they grow older. Love your child and enjoy being a parent or carer or grandparent or uncle. Your child’s learning will happen without flash cards, and fancy ‘educational’ toys.Often the most valuable lessons are when you share time and experiences together.

• Spend time with your child – without hovering over them. Include them in what you are doing and thinking. Give them lots of time to play. Play with them.

• Have conversations with them where you ask an open question and listen to their response and then re-spond.

• Show your child the world outside your home. Visit the library, museum, art gallery or go to a playground. Take a trip on a train or bus – just for the sake of seeing the world. Go for walks in the bush or play at the beach. Being out and about in the world not only builds that important sense of belonging to a communi-ty, it gives your child the chance to explore, to experiment and to create.

• Above all, have fun and enjoy learning along with your child.

In July Ella Fletcher of Year 8 ran in the State Cross Country Final, finishing an

outstanding 37th overall.

Well done Ella!!

SOUTHERN METRO REGION BADMITTON FINALS

The Year 8 boys played some outstanding games against Frankston High and then Keysborough College at the SMR Finals in Keysborough last week. Unfortunately, despite their many hours of dedicated training, they lost both matches. The boys had a very enjoyable time as the competition was close.

The Senior girls had a similar experience. The competition was fierce but very friendly and the girls played above their usual standard. Thanks everyone for a very enjoyable day.

YEAR 11 SUBJECTS TASTER DAY It’s Course Counselling season at Rosebud SC at the moment. Students in Year 8 to 11 are thinking about what direction they want their school/career pathway to go and the subjects that they need along the way.

To help our Year 10 students decide whether they want to do VCE or VCAL and decide what subjects they would enjoy and do well at next year, we ran a Subjects Taster Day on Monday 30th July. All students in Year 10 chose subjects that they wanted to find out more about and went along to six taster lessons. Students, teachers and parents all reported this day being a really enjoyable experience and very helpful for students to confirm what they want to do or make that tricky deci-sion about subjects they were sitting on the fence about. Here are a few photos of students trying out a Year 11 Biology les-son.
