Principal’s Message
Hi, my name is Rod Sutherland and I will be the Principal at this school this term. I am indeed fortunate that I have this opportunity to work here as I make the transition back to the city from the country. I have already been made to feel really welcome into this school community by students, staff and the parents I have met so far. Thank you! First impressions are really important and this school gives a very good positive first impression. I am looking forward to working here for the remainder of the term. We have a normal busy school term ahead of us, and I hope to meet many more of you at the events and happenings associated with the school, or even in the yard as you drop off or pick up your children. End of Term interviews will be held on Tuesday the 22nd of September. These are always a good opportunity to catch up with the teacher if you have not had the chance to do so during the term. Term 3 reports will be handed out at the interviews, and they will focus on ‘the General Capabilities’. General Capabilities are an inbuilt part of the Australian Curriculum and can be found in all subject areas at some point or other. It is intended that the general capabilities will encompass the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that, together with curriculum content in each learning area and the cross-curriculum priorities, will assist students to live and work successfully in the twenty-first century. There seven (7) general capabilities – Literacy; Numeracy; Information and Communication Technology (ICT); Creative and Critical Thinking; Personal and Social Capability; Ethical Understanding; and Intercultural Understanding. Successful development of these capabilities will contribute to becoming a successful learner, confident and creative individual, and an active and informed citizen. The reports at the end of the term will give us an indication of where your children are placed in the development of these capabilities. Parent feedback on the Australian Curriculum Parents are invited to contribute to DECD’s submission to ACARA monitoring the Australian Curriculum by participating in an online survey. “DECD would like to hear from parents/carers about the Australian Curriculum so that we can feed into the national process of curriculum monitoring. This curriculum is used by Reception to Year 10 teachers to plan what students will learn. Your opinions will be a valuable contribution to DECD’s feedback to the national monitoring process. The survey can be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Feedback_Parents_Carers_Aust_Curric. The survey closes on Friday 7 August.” Regards,

PASTORAL SUPPORT WORKER REVIEW
During the last week of term 2, a review of the Pastoral Care Worker role at Lockleys Primary School was held by a panel of four
representatives. This review formed part of the performance development of the role and of the person employed in the role. The
panel consisted of the school principal, the manager of School’s Ministry Group, and two representatives from the cooperating
churches. A review report to the community is an important part of the process.
Jo Skeates has been in the role for a number of years, and unfortunately her role was cut by 6 hours a week in 2015 due to the
new funding structure. The Lockleys Primary School Governing Council recognised the merit of the role in the past and in
particular the work Jo has done and graciously used their funds to employ Jo for a further 11 hours per week. Jo’s role changed
somewhat in 2015 due to the new structure however her focus on the community did not.
DECD has six clear priorities in its Strategic Plan and ‘engaging children, parents and community’ is one of the six priorities and
this is where Jo’s role fundamentally sits. Furthermore, our partnership has community development as one of its three priorities,
and wellbeing is a priority of the school. A school-wide survey was conducted on the role Jo does in the school. We had over 120
responses from parents, students and staff which were collated and tabled at the review.
Open and honest discussions were held over the surveys and we are extremely pleased that responses were overwhelmingly
glowing and positive. The impact Jo has had on the community is highly valued and it was agreed among the panel her
contribution and effectiveness will be immeasurable over the long term. It was noted that the community aspect of Lockleys
Primary School is well known in the offices of DECD which is to be commended. A lot of what Jo does happens behind the scenes,
but the impact she has made to individuals and families is outstanding. Jo contributes heavily to the overall wellbeing of students,
parents and staff when needed. The connections Jo has established between families, agencies and community has been a major
benefit to the school. Jo’s influence goes well beyond the playgroups and breakfast clubs, it is the home visits, dinners at her
home, endless hours of listening and the offers of support that have enabled students to attend school, families to have networks
and the home to school transitions become easier.
Jo has an outstanding personality and demeanour which she imparts on everyone. Jo is constantly working on improving the
school, and the wellbeing of students and families in her everyday work. The school has become a warm and friendly place for
future families in playgroup and it is through ventures such as these that enhance the school’s reputation in the wider community.
The feedback to Jo is as follows:
“Well done Jo, the panel commends you highly for the work you have done at Lockleys Primary School. The surveys clearly show
how valued you are throughout the community, and the endorsement you have from the Governing Council is outstanding. You are
an asset to the Lockleys Primary School Community and you need to be proud of what you have achieved.”
Comments from the surveys
“Jo is wonderful!” “The support Jo has given to our family is invaluable.” “We feel part of the school because of Jo.” “Jo must have
more hours.” “Jo is a national treasure, she brings an amazing sense of happiness and positivity to the school.” “Jo is amazing.” “I
love Jo.” “Never get rid of Jo.”

SAPSASA SOCCER
On Thursday of week 10, Lockleys Primary Year 6/7 boys played a
SAPSASA soccer match against Islamic College. We played two halves,
each 20 minutes in length. Unfortunately Lockleys lost in the game, the
score was a whopping 21-0.
This was the first game for the Lockleys Team and despite the loss, we
had lots of fun which is the most important thing.
The boys who played in the team are Axel, Dylan, Connor, Tyrayne, Joel,
Jia, Stirling, Jagreet, Manuel, Danilo, Dlyan, Michael, Jay.
Thank you to Mr Mickan for organising the game and coaching the team.
YEAR 5/6/7 HANDBALL
This term we are really lucky to be working with Rick from Global Community Sports and Georgia from Handball SA to learn how
to play European Handball. We will be making a booklet that we are going to send to India so that they can learn how to play
European Handball too.
Our lessons are broken up into two parts. The first part of the lesson is theory in the classroom where we are writing the steps and
drawing diagrams for the booklet. The diagrams will help anyone who doesn’t speak or read English to understand the game.
The second part of the lesson we go into the gym to learn the skills and play some games. Currently we are learning the correct
technique for throwing, catching and ball control. So far we have been learning the easy version of the game but each week it will
get more complicated.
We are really looking forward to seeing the finished product of the booklet that will be sent to India, and excited to get our own
copy too.

SKOOLBAG Have you joined the growing number of parents that have downloaded the free app for Skoolbag?
Skoolbag is the ultimate school to parent communication tool. This School Mobile App provides schools with an easy way to tell
parents and carers everything they need to know about school news, newsletters, events calendar, cancellations, school notices,
school information, school timetables, parent sick note forms, school documents and much more. No more lost paper in school
bags! Below are the instructions on how to get this app.
As a school we have been sending notifications and newsletters out via this app – with great success. Our target is to get as many
parents as possible using this app. Parents are now sending in absent notes for their children and payment of accounts. These
are sent to the email address and admin staff process the information each day.
If you haven’t already downloaded the app – please take the time to look at it.
