Family Newsletter No. 32 ● April 22 – 26, 2019

Children will have

fun reviewing, comparing and contrasting reptiles and amphibians. Both have no fur or hair, have keen eyesight, have backbones and are cold-blooded. Reptiles, however,

have scales or plates on their rough and dry bodies. Amphibians begin life their life in water and mature later in their lives. We hope the children will enjoy reviewing these special animals!

Los niños se divertirán revisando, comparando y contrastando reptiles y anfibios esta semana. Estos animales son similares en que no tienen pelo, tienen una gran vista, tienen espinas dorsales y son de sangre fría.

Anfibios comienzan su vida en el agua y maduran más tarde en sus vidas. Reptiles tienen escamas o placas en sus cuerpos ásperos y secos. ¡Esperamos que los niños disfruten revisando estos animales especiales!

Don’t miss out! Our next Family Night is scheduled for April 23 at 6:15

p.m. and will be presented by Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Children’s Theatre Program.

“J and E and the Zig Zag Sea” offers engaging live performances and puppet theater that are age appropriate for youngsters and families to help promote self-esteem and a love of reading!

Please turn off cell phones and refrain from talking during the performances.

Please do not block the aisles.

An adult should escort young children who become restless or begin to cry to the lobby area during the performance and return to the Multi-Purpose Room when they are ready.

Notes To Parents

The kindergarteners are

reading! Now is the time to encourage them to read even more! A big step in learning how to read is being able to figure out new words. Here are some ways to help your child practice reading:

Ask your child to read aloud. Give him/her lots of practice reading materials.

Encourage your child to "sound out" words. If he/she is having trouble figuring out a word, use your finger to point to the first letter in the word. Help your child “sound out” the beginning sound of each word.

Gently correct your child. When your child makes a mistake when reading aloud, gently point out the letters he/she overlooked or read incorrectly. Encourage your child to pay attention to all the letters in a word. Have him/her try again.

Be patient. Figuring out new words is hard work! When your child is trying to sound out words, give him/her time. It might take several tries.

Have your child re-read sentences. When your child has figured out a new word, ask him/her to re-read the sentence to reinforce the learning of the new word.

Read, read, and read some more! Encourage your child to re-read favorite books. Make reading together a warm and loving time.

Help your child learn to read! The most commonly used words in English follow few spelling or pronunciation rules and cause children great difficulty when they are beginning to read. If you help your child master these words and know them "by sight”, then s/he will be able to focus on the more important content words.
