l SUMMARY

A metavolcanic belt within the Wabigoon Subprovince was identified and mapped during the 1984 summer field season. Part of this belt lies within the Wabakimi Provincial Park. This report describes the geology within the park boundaries.

2.0 INTRODUCTION (Figure 1)

The Brennan Lake base metals project was designed to investigate and evaluate the geology of the gneissic belt(s) between the northern portion of the Sturgeon Lake Greenstone Belt and the Caribou Lake Greenstone Belt (Figure 1).

An attempt was made to correlate the regional geology with previously observed magnetic trends in order to establish the general stratigraphy of the area. Reconnaissance geological mapping was carried out by Noranda personnel throughout the project area over a period of approximately four months during the 1984 field season.

Mapping was impeded by the existence of the Wabakimi Provincial Wilderness Park, located in the center of the project area. Access to the park area was not gained until late August due to a delay in the receipt of an Exploratory Licence of Occupation which governs work carried out within park boundaries.

Geological mapping was generally limited to exposures and occasional cross country traverses, due to size of the project area.

lakeshore the large

Once the general stratigraphy was established, an "area of favourable geological environment" was recognized in the Wabakimi Lake-Smoothrock Lake area, and extensive mapping was carried out to further evaluate the potential of the area for possible stratiform "Geco-Type" base metal mineralization.

4.J1 PERSONNEL

Work within the park was carried out by Noranda Exploration Company, Limited employees N. Purdy, A. Simunovic, and D. Courtney, during the period September 25 to October 3, 1984.

5.0 PREVIOUS WORK

Very little previous work has been carried out in the Brennan Lake project area. The most significant previous activity was centered in the Goldsborough/Kenoji Lake area where an airborne EM survey was flown by Panther International Mining Company Limited in 1958. Five drill holes totalling 336 meters were drilled in the i,erg River area by Panther International. These drill holes encountered minor chalcopyrite and pentlandite mineralization within mafic volcanics. The most recent government mapping completed in the area was published in 1974 by the O.D.M. (Operation Ignace/Arrastrong) at a scale of 1"**2 miles.

6.0 GEOLOGY (Figure 2)

The Brennan Lake Gneissic Belt exists within the confines of the Wabigoon Metavolcanic Belt. The geology of the region is comprised of high grade me t avoleanics and pa r agneisses . Mi gmitizat ion is predominant throughout the central and western portions of the project area. The general stratigraphy of the Brennan Lake Gneissic Belt is illustrated in Figure 2.

The southernmost of 5 km) series of layered to be of volcanic origin. Amphibolite, grades into migmatites and gneisses of formations are present intermediate gneisses.

lithology is comprised of a thick (upwards amphibolites and mafic gneisses, presumed This mafic formation, termed the Cache Lake a more highly metamorphosed series of intermediate composition. Narrow, lean iron near the top (north) of the Berry Lake

Occurring at the top of the Cache Lake volcanic cycle is the Granite Lake Felsic Band which trends north/south and is exposed along the shore of Granite Lake. The anomalous structural trend exhibited by this felsic band is interpreted to be a result of flexural warping and doming created by the intrusion of the Brennan Lake Pluton immediately to the west. This first volcanic cycle is capped by the McWade Lake Iron Formation which consists of pyrite-pyrrhotite bearing amphibolite.

A second cycle of mafic/intermediate/felsic gneisses overlies the Cache Leke series.

The uppermost Wabakimi/Smoothrock metavoleanic cycle is capped by an east/west trending unit of finely banded felsic gneisses.

is a pproximately 400-600 meters thick and is bounded to the by a mixed package of amphibolitic mafic gneisses and pelitic

sedimentary gneisses. The Lower Wabakimi felsic unit is traceable over a length of 2.4 kilometers.

Further to the east on the shores of Outlet and Lonebreast Bays of Smoothrock Lake there exists a horizr.n of silicate facies iron formation. The exhalite lithology is comprised of recrystallized primary chert with 1-3 centimeter thick bands of tremolite-actinolite. This unit is traceable over a strike length of 15 kilometers and is observed to thicken up to 25 meters to the east towards the Caribou Lake Greenstone Belt.

The exhalite i s bounded to the south by a sequence of highly deformed pillow basalts which attain a thickness of approximately 1000 meters. In contact with the exhalite to the north exists a unit of mafic to intermediate lapilli tuff containing deformed felsic fragments.

Surface outcrops of the e xhal i t e-ir on formation extilbit severe gossan development associated with semi-massive to disseminated pyrite and minor pyrrhotite mineralization. One sample collected from the western shore of Outlet Bay yielded 220 ppb Au. No base metal mineral i * 1. 1 ion was detected. Although the Lower Wabakimi felsic band is geographically distinct form the Smoothrock exhalite horizon, it is entirely possible that they were contemporaneously deposited.

North of the Cache Lake and Wabakimi Smoothrock metavoJcanicseries, the predominant lithology is comprised of pelitic paragneissesand metasediments with minor intercalated bands of barren mafic tuff.

The stratigrtphy recognized in the Cache Lake Smoothrock- Wabakimi Lakes area i:, not easily traceable to the west. Magnetic trends do however support the continuity of the established geologic units. Mapping in the eastern portion of the project area failed to substantiate this premise. The rocks adjacent to the northern reaches of the Sturgeon lake Greenstone Belt in the Flindt River area are highly granitized and massive. Cache lake amphibolites are not traceable further east than the Brennan lake Pluton.

Outcrop in the Tew Lake area is minimal which further hampered mapping. Diabase dykes and sills are common in the southeast portion of the project area as well as some earlier mafic intrusions which are possibly roots of eroded or partially disseminated mefic greenstone pods.

7.0 MINERALIZATION

No economic mineralization was encountered during field work on the Brennan Lake project. Numerous minor occurrences of disseminated pyrite and/or pyrrhotite were sampled for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag and Au, Most of these showings were found to occur within pods of

One anomalous Cu value (D.21% Cu) was obtained from a narrow mineralized mafic dyke near the Boiling Sands River on Smoothrock Lake.

As previously mentioned, a value of 220 ppb Au was obtained from the Smoothrock Exhalite band on Outlet Bay indicating enriched gold values within that lithology.

All sample locations are plotted on Maps complete analyses are attached (Appendix I).

8.O CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The Brennan Lake reconnaissance program resulted in the identification of 4 a roetavolcanic belt. No significant mineralization was observed and, as the belt lies almost exclusively within the boundaries of the Wabakimi Provincial Wilderness park with a lack of road access to the area, no further work is recommended at this time.
