Royce Olarte began his musical career at the age of 8. Since elementary school, he has taken private lessons for both the piano and clarinet under Ms. Marion Evans and Dr. Marty Handleman, respectively. Throughout elementary school and middle school, Royce especially excelled in the clarinet earning 1st chair honors as a 6th grader. Upon entering high school, he decided to switch his focus from clarinet to piano. Thus he moved to the piano studio of Mrs. Hellen Juman. Under her direction, Royce participated in the MTAC Certificate of Merit Evaluations for piano, the National Guild of Piano Teachers Evaluations, and the Inland Empire Piano Festival in the solo and duet divisions. He progressed in his skills very quickly and by the time he reached his junior year of high school, Royce completed the Advanced Level of the Certificate of Merit Evaluations. During the years he participated in the Certificate of Merit Evaluations, he passed every year with honors and was eligible to perform at the MTAC Convention. He also received the Top-Score award for his level for three consecutive years in the National Guild of Piano Teachers Evaluations. As he continued to play for numerous church functions, recitals, competitions, a highlight of his career came up in the opportunity to record for the Loma Linda Broadcasting Network (LLBN) as a solo feature. During this time, he decided to incorporate another instrument, so he began to play the ukulele. In addition to being an instrumentalist, Royce is a member of the select choir Musikappelle, based at Loma Linda Filipino Church. This choir has had opportunities to perform at Loma Linda University Church, record for LLBN, and even perform alongside singer Steve Green. Royce has an immense passion for music and teaching, thus he decided to recently switch from a Pre-Medicine route, to focus towards a career in education and hopefully obtain a Ph. D in Biomathematics. Royce is currently a sophomore Biomathematics major, Music Minor, and is pursuing his Secondary Teaching Credentials for mathematics. At La Sierra University, he has been a part of Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Big Band, and the Clarinet Chamber Group.
