My son was on football acouple years and the letter“E” in the Rover Nation hissenior year and my daughteris in band, therefore I havebeen following Easton foot-ball for the past 6 years. This of course prompted meto read the articles about thegame and your BB article. Iapplaud you on your senseof humor and awesome allit-eration!!

I am writing to tell youthat I have LOVED yourLily White inserts. Therehave been many opinionsabout the diversity of thecoaches and quite frankly, Ithink it is silly. Now, Idon’t know much aboutsports but in my opinion, ifsomeone applies for acoaching job and they arequalified, they get the job.Bottom line......whether youare lily white or not!

Sincerely,A true Easton fan(so as not to embarrass

my daughter if you printthis, just sign me withabove, thank you.....)

BY TOM HINKELThe Express-Times

The last time Pius X HighSchool’s football team played adistrict title game on its homefield many of its current play-ers were in diapers.

The year was 1995, andcoach Frank Scagliotta’s Royalsposted a 31-21 win over Bristol.

There’s nothing childishabout this year’s group, whichwent on a mid-season tear andhasn’t looked back.

The top-seeded Royals gofor their first District 11 ClassA crown since 2004 on Satur-day when they play No. 3 Tri-Valley of the Twin ValleyLeague at Alumni Stadium.

“We’ve been looking for-ward to this all year,” saidJustin Mazza, Pius X’s seniorrunning back and safety.

“There’s nothing better thanplaying this on our home field— especially for the seniors.”

Pius X (9-2) was strugglingat 2-2 before a victory overHoly Name in Week 5 startedcoach Rob Goffredo’s team on

a seven-gamewinning streak.

“I’m reallyexcited,” saidG o f f r e d o ,whose team de-feated CardinalBrennan in the2004 title game.“We’ve got a

great bunch of kids this year. They’re a pleasure to bearound.”

The Royals are coming off a20-7 win over Schuylkill Havenin last week’s semifinals. Widereceiver Sean O’Neill caughtsix passes for 105 yards and a

pair of touchdowns.“The last couple weeks have

been just awesome,” Goffredosaid. “The kids are so focused. They’ve done a great jobpreparing and it showed lastSaturday.”

Mazza has been beset by in-juries the past two seasons. Hemissed last season with a bro-ken leg and the first two gamesthis year with a broken collar-bone.

“I never gave up,” he said.“People said ‘why even play?’To have an opportunity like thisin front of me … The wholeteam has been through adver-sity. We want this (champi-onship) as a team.”

Senior quarterback Antho-ny Casciano has passed for1,919 yards and 15 touchdowns. His top targets are wideoutsMatt Camilletti (31 catches, 413yards, 4 TDs), a sophomore, and junior George Dalessan-

dro (32-543, 4 TDs).Mazza, sophomore Nick

DeRea, and senior LukeDeluise have shared time atrunning back. Senior insidelinebacker Luke Texeira is theRoyals’ leading tackler.

“I’m happy we’ve turned itaround,” Mazza said. “AfterWeek 4 our practices havebeen solid.”

Tri-Valley (7-4) also hascome on strong after a slowstart. The Bulldogs opened

with losses to SchuylkillHaven (28-6) and WilliamsValley (34-6). Tri-Valley defeat-ed Williams Valley 39-13 in lastweek’s other first-roundmatchup.

“They have some very goodrunning backs, and a very goodquarterback who throws theball well,” Goffredo said.“They spread you out. We’vegot to be prepared for every-thing. It’s going to be a greattest.”

Senior tailback WyattStraub paces the Bulldogs’with 994 yards rushing and 11touchdowns. Straub reported-ly missed the first game againstWilliams Valley for discipli-nary reasons.

“They like to get Straub off-tackle,” Goffredo said. “I thinkthat’s when he’s at his best. I’dlike to get him going east-west.Once he goes north-south he’stough to control. We’ll reallyhave to play good defense to

bottle him up.”Junior tailback Brandon

Auman has contributed 392yards and three scores. Seniorquarterback Matt McGinleyhas thrown for 1,650 yards and13 touchdowns with 6 intercep-tions.

Senior wideout Matt Hep-ler (40-559, 3 TDs), senior tightend Bryn Bowman (32-451, 6TDs) and junior wideout Tan-ner Troutman (23-438, 3 TDs)are Tri-Valley’s primary passcatchers.

“All week we’ve beenpreparing tremendously,”Mazza said. “The coaches haveput in countless hours, and Ican’t thank them enough forwhat they do. They’re so dedi-cated. They make a lot of sacri-fices.

“We’re just a big Royal fam-ily.”
