  • 2. How Are Hurricanes Formed?
    • Higher pressure areas meet lower pressure areas.
    • Air becomes warm and moist then rises into a cloud.
    • Fed by warm evaporating ocean water, it keeps growing.
    • Cool air rotates around the low pressure area, increasing speed.
    • It becomes stronger from the wind and water inside keeps making clouds.
    • The eye is formed in the center and is very clear.
    • It becomes a violent tropical cyclone.
  • 3. Precipitation, Wind, and Destruction
    • Hurricanes bring flooding, torrential rain, storm surge and high winds.
    • The wind speed of a hurricane ranges from 74mph- 155mph.
    • Hurricanes are categorized by wind speed, damage, and storm surge.
    • They ruin buildings, pick up cars, and cause millions of dollars worth of damage.

    • Connection
    • Captain Tyne is talking about the hurricane to his crew. This shows his awareness of how powerful the hurricane is and that he knows his crew is in danger.

    • After I lost contact with the raft I was by myself and I realized my only chance of survival was to make it until the storm subsided.
    • Connection
    • This shows the damage and loss of life that can occur from a hurricane. It also illustrates the length of time that a hurricane can last.

    • If the boats flip over- even with everything dogged down- water is going to get in. The boats upside- down, the plywoods buckling, thats the end.

    • They know their lives are on the line and the hurricanes strength is strong enough to ruin their boat and leave them stranded.

    • This shows that even when we have prior knowledge of a storm we dont always heed the warnings, and that can lead to severe consequences.
