BioRotor® – The Right Solution
Napier-Reid (N-R), with over 60 years of experience in the water and
wastewater treatment industry and over 3,000 projects worldwide, provides
innovative custom solutions for our customers. Rotating Biological Contactor
(RBC) technology has withstood the test of time and proven that it is one of
the most effective waste water treatment systems available. With over 80
years of use and thousands of systems installed, the RBC technology has
proven effective when it comes to efficiency and simplicity when treating
wastewater.
N-R’s strong shafts translate to many years of trouble free operation and
little to no maintenance cost for the shaft. Our BioRotor® system is compact
and does not require lagoons, outside holding tanks, or security fences. A
key advantage is that our system is quiet and odorless and the enclosure can
be built to blend into any surrounding.

BioRotor® Simplified Diagram of a four stage BioRotor®
BioRotor® is an extremely efficient secondary biological wastewater treatment system that
is also well suited for advanced wastewater treatment. It utilizes aerobic fixed film
technology to reduce organic matter (BOD5), total suspended solid (TSS), ammonia and
phosphorous (P). RBC systems were first introduced in Europe in the 1960’s.
A typical BioRotor® system consists of hundreds of thin circular plastic disks, collectively
known as media, mounted on a horizontal shaft. Corrugated plastic with a thickness of
0.060” (1.5mm) is used to maintain high structural integrity while maximizing the
biologically active surface area which promotes the growth of the many types of bacteria.
Around 40% of the disk’s surface area is submerged in a tank that contains the wastewater.
Continuously driven by a gear motor, the media rotates slowly at about 2 rpm.
Bacteria which is naturally present in human waste attach and multiply on the rotating
media forming a thin layer of biomass
The rotation carries the biomass and a thin layer of wastewater into the air facilitating the
absorption of oxygen. This aerated layer of bacteria is then re-submerged into the water
where it metabolizes organic matter from the wastewater producing the required effluent
quality. The RBC design provides for optimum aeration eliminating the need for complex
and expensive aerators. As the film starts to grow, excess biomass is removed by shearing
forces by the disks’ rotation in a process called sloughing. The rotating action of the disks
also helps keep the solids in suspension.
BioRotor® is designed with multiple baffles to create a wider biodiversity. The variety of
bacteria, coupled with optimum oxygen absorption, translates to a consistently high
effluent quality, a shorter retention time, and low sludge generation. Thus our system
requires a much smaller footprint when compared to a conventional sewage treatment
system with similar capacity. BioRotor® units can be arranged in various configurations to
meet the flow and organic load requirements and to provide secondary or advanced levels
of treatment e.g.: Ultra violet disinfection, denitrification, filtration etc.

Advantages of BioRotor®
1) Proven Process: BioRotor® is capable of treating a variety of flows without compromising
effluent quality – no minimum inflow of sewage is required. The system is also able to
handle overloading for short periods of time. Superior process design insures that
retention time and head loss through the system is reduced. All of our systems exhibit low
sludge production and consistent process results and process control. The simplicity in
operation means that no sludge recycling and less lab testing for process control is
required.
2) Easy & Immediate Start-up: the BioRotor® system is designed to be a complete
wastewater treatment plant. Start-up can be handled with minimal technical experience
because the systems are preassembled. The main task is lowering the system into the
foundation support - a process that can be completed in as little as 30 minutes.
3) Low operating & Maintenance Costs: Operating costs are very low since no chemicals
need to be added to the process and minimal skill is required to operate the plant. In fact,
frequent supervision is not required since our systems are automated and can include an
alarm in the event the system stops working. Our system requires very little power and the
only tasks during maintenance are lubrication of the drive and bearings and bi-annual
removal of sludge.
4) Inoffensive & Unobtrusive: Our BioRotor® systems can be installed near public places
since they are quiet and produce no odour. It can be housed within any structure of the
client’s choice. NR can provide fiberglass covers that not only protect the BioRotor® from
the outside elements and trespassers but also help maintain a low profile that is
aesthetically pleasing in any environment (e.g.: golf course, hotels, within a community
etc.). Our systems can operate year round under all conditions.
5) Flexibility & Sustainability: BioRotor® is able to expand with the population being served,
because additional systems can be installed in parallel to increase the total capacity. This is
an essential benefit for municipalities and developments expecting to grow over time.
6) Environmentally Friendly: BioRotor® is energy efficient and does not incorporate toxic
chemicals that can harm the environment. The effluent produced is clean and safe enough
to discharge directly to surface watercourses or subsurface tile beds.

Made of 1.5 mm thick high density polyethylene for structural strength. Large flow channels to allow sloughing of excess biomass. Corrugated design to increase the effective surface area. Ultraviolet protection provided by the incorporation of a carbon black stabilizer. Moulded holes that spread the load evenly in the corrugated media. Mounted with stainless steel or galvanized steel pipes fixed at three points for effective
mechanical support.
Outstanding structural design. Capable of withstanding, with a safety factor of at least two, the worst case scenario of having the disks full of wet biomass and the tank completely empty.
Structurally designed for minimal deflection. Designed with low stress level for long-term service life.
Explosion proof design. Robust in design and built with high quality components. High efficiency planetary reducers built and rated in accordance with current
international gear manufacturing standards. Powerful Compact gear-reducer designed for high torque. Synthetic-oil lubrication for years of smooth and quiet operation. Shrink disc mounting on RBC shaft transmits torque with a high safety factor. BioRotor® is mounted on huge spherical self aligning roller bearings with a life expectancy
of over 50 years.
