    Gagemakers Joint Strength System (JSS) is a revolutionarybeakthrough in accurately gauging the quality of rotary

    shouldered connections. Why? The answer lies in the mosimportant measurement used to accept or reject a connectorsqualitypitch diameter. Pitch diameter is the controldiameter used in the design of a connector. Historically, pitchdiameter is one feature on a connector that has been left tointerpretation by the fit of a ring or plug gage. A ring orplug gage will not directly detect variation in pitch diameter

    Insert Identification

    The first step in the quality process is toensure the tooling being used is correctfor the job. Use the JSS Thread Insert

    Identifier Templates to quickly verify thatthe correct threading insert has beenselected. A quick mating of the insert tothe template ensures the insert is correct

    for the job. JSS insert identifiers havemultiple notches on each template and areavailable for all API thread forms.

    Thread Form

    Thread form accuracy is important if twoconnectors are to make-up properly.Using a JSS Thread Profile Gage and a JSS

    Thread Addendum Gage provide a quickcheck of the thread to ensure that the formis correct. Thread form verification ensuresform accuracy.

    Thread Lead

    Verifying thread lead is within toleranceis a required inspection according to APspecification. Application of the JSS Lead

    Gage to a setting standard and then to theproduct confirms that the lathe is cuttingproperly. Lead variation has a direct effecon pitch diameter and how two connectors

    go together when made up.

    Thread Taper

    Thread taper is another inspectionrequired by API Spec 7. For accurate taperinspections, use the JSS Taper Gages to

    verify that the pin and box connectors willhave matching tapers. As connectors aremade up, taper errors induce high stressesthat eventually can lead to connection

    failure.

    Thread Height

    Proper thread height maximizes theperformance of the connection. Threadheight is also an API requirement.

    The JSS Thread Height Gages provideimmediate feedback on how the threadheight compares to the specificationrequirements. A shallow thread height

    may allow the connection to pull apartunder critical loads.

    Pitch Diameter

    Pitch diameter is the most criticalmeasurement in machining threads. TheJSS Pitch Diameter Locating Templates

    and JSS Pitch Diameter Gages give youcontrol over your threading quality. Whenpitch diameters dont meet specification itallows the connection to flex while drilling,

    ultimately causing galling and connectionfailure.

    If you have a large investment in ring and plug gages, youcan still use them, just make sure the part is JSS good before

    you thread that ring or plug gage onto the part. So whetheyou are looking for an alternative to or averification of ring and plug gages, choosejoint strength over connection failure bychoosing the Joint Strength System.

    With the basic JSS gage package, you will be able to inspectany rotary shouldered connector without the use of a ring or

    plug gage. Right hand or left hand, it doesnt matter, thesegages dont care. Also, JSS provides a method to control allthe features that make a connector perform properly. Thesystem checks thread cone taper, thread lead, thread height,thread form, and pitch diameter at the pitch plane. If you dohave a problem, youll know where to find it.
