Weekly News and Announcements
Hello Rotarians and Friends! I hope all you enjoyed the beautiful fall
weekend and are anticipating all the fun to come at this year’s Chocolate
Festival. It’s just around the corner…literally. I hope you all are spreading
the word among family, friends and co-workers.
Judy Masaki handled Fellowship this week and focused on some of the
funny things church-going children say. It reminded all the parents of
their own children and how they hear and interpret things differently. Too
funny!
Our Guests and Visiting Rotarians were: Heather Sahli from the
Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
Chocolate Festival – Set up for the event will be on
Wednesday, October 12th. We will definitely need
volunteers. If you can help that day, please contact
Teri Surin.
The Chocolate Festival will be held this Thursday,
October 13th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St. Demetrios on Atlantic Avenue.
Derek Steyer from WFMJ News will be our MC all evening, so if chocolate
isn’t enough reason to attend, this should do the trick! Tickets are $15 for
individuals, $25 for couples. It’s tons of fun so make plans to attend.
Quaker Steak & Lube Bike Night – Our last night at QS&L was last
Friday and it ended with a whimper instead of a bang due to the weather.
That didn’t stop those who attended from having a good time, however.
Thanks to all the volunteers who helped us with this over the past few
months. We really appreciate all your support.
October Board Meeting – Board members were asked to contact Julia
Wetstein as to whether or not they would be available for the board
meeting if it were rescheduled to October 18th. If you haven’t already
contacted her, please do so ASAP.
RI International Convention – As you know, next year our club will be
celebrating its 100th anniversary. Julia Wetstein would love to have a
booth at the Convention in the House of Friendship to let our closest
35,000+ friends know what we have accomplished in our first 100 years.
The Convention will be held from June 10 to 14, 2017. Expect to hear more
about the upcoming convention in Atlanta, GA as the year goes by.

be holding a fundraising event on October 22. Please see the last page of
this newsletter for complete details.
Paul Harris Fellows Awarded By Dallas Woodall
When Tony Cafaro gave us his program on the
Cafaro Company earlier this year, he included
glowing tributes to his parents who began as
owners of the Ritz Bar on Youngstown’s east
side and ended up as major real estate
developers in our Valley. Frank Bodor, who had a
client also involved in the Eastwood Mall project, added a glowing tribute to
Tony and his parents and, pointing to our Paul Harris Fellow banner, said that
Tony’s father’s name should be included on it.
Well, not one to miss an opportunity for Foundation giving, I contacted Tony
and suggested that he make his father a Paul Harris Fellow. Tony responded,
as you might well imagine, by saying he wanted to recognize both of his
parents with that honor. I received his check shortly thereafter and it
provided me with what I believe is a “first”. I don’t remember ever having
one Rotarian endowing two Paul Harris Fellow recipients at one time (except
for Rob Berk’s family following Jaden’s Pinball for Polio bar mitzvah project).
Also, Tony is the first Rotarian I can recall having endowed one or more Paul
Harris fellowships and not being a Paul Harris Fellow himself. I think you can
rest assured (and Tony can become nervous) that I will not let that go
unresolved. I promise you, Tony will be a Paul Harris Fellow.
Fellow Rotarians, Anthony M. Cafaro, Sr., or as we better know him, “Tony”,
has honored his parents, William and Alyce Cafaro, with a contribution to
The Rotary Foundation making them both Paul Harris Fellows.
Tony has been a member of our club for not very long, but astute person and
businessman that he is, he has quickly recognized the efficiency and
Rotary
Code of
Conduct
As a Rotarian, I will:
Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal
and professional
life.
Deal fairly with others
and treat them and their
occupations with respect.
Use my
professional skills through
Rotary to mentor young people, help those with
special needs, and improve
people’s quality of life
in my community
and the world.
Avoid behavior that
reflects adversely on
Rotary or other
Rotarians.
effectiveness of The Rotary Foundation, a charity that distributes all of its
contributions for its charitable purposes. For nearly thirty years, we have
been bragging about our successes in working to rid the world of polio. Now
that that has nearly been achieved, challenges such as literacy and water are
waiting for us, especially water.
We take clean water for granted (unless a pipe bursts and we are getting a
“boil alert”). If you have travelled to a third world country, you know what it
is like to have to buy bottled water even to brush your teeth just to avoid
the wrath of Montezuma.
Tony is also showing us another example of how we can contribute to the
Foundation and fund Paul Harris Fellows. So many of us have become Paul
Harris Fellows and said “I’m glad that’s over—I won’t have to give any more”.
It reminds me of Little Jack Horner who stuck in his thumb, pulled out a
plum and said “what a good boy am I!”. That is not the case with Tony.
Naming a loved one (or loved ones as he has done) as Paul Harris Fellow
epitomizes the spirit of Rotary. Tony’s parents joined more than 200
members or friends of the Rotary Club of Warren on this Paul Harris Fellow
banner.
Tony, we thank you for your generosity and your belief in The Foundation.
Here are certificates naming each of your parents as Paul Harris Fellows, an
initial Paul Harris Fellow pin for you to wear and a Paul Harris pin with one
blue stone indicating that you have reached Paul Harris Fellow “Plus 1”
status. This stone replaces the one I just gave you. This is also a first for
me. I don’t remember ever having giving a Rotarian a “Plus 1” pin at the same
time as the basic pin.
The Rotary Foundation thanks Tony for his generosity in his contribution
toward our goal of world peace and understanding.
Following the acceptance of the Certificates and Pin for his parents, our
Tony surprised Dallas and all of us with another check for $1,000 for
his own Paul Harris Fellow. This is why we love him and are so glad he’s
a Warren Rotarian!

The Economic Revolution of Poland
Thomas Batten of Columbus, Indiana, joined us
today to talk about the economic revolution in
Poland. Thomas works for a consulting firm that
provides business services such as strategic
planning and lived in Poland for five years.
In 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down, Poland
decided that all children would learn English and
as a result of that decision, all people under the age of 30 speak perfect
English. Poland has several industrial cities, some founded in the 1700s,
that are now more modern than many others.
Because Poland has managed to reduce its national debt, it has survived
better than most countries impacted by the European economic crisis. He
said that in order to reduce their debt, they took half of the retirement
savings of each person and applied it to the debt. Their debt now stands
at 50% of the GDP. In comparison, the United States debt stands at
100% of its GDP.
He said that Poland is a country of financial extremes. Its unemployment
rate continues to rise primarily because older residents do not have the
technical skills to succeed in an increasing tech world. However, because
they have managed their debt so effectively, their GDP continues to rise.

Many of the building in Lodz, where Thomas lived, have been restored.
The country itself has become the gateway to the east and south with
many Fortune 500 companies having businesses there.
A new Silk Road is being planned now which will eventually replace some of
the sea routes being used for trade. This new road will go right through
Poland, opening the possibility of even more development in the future.
According to Thomas, some of the country’s future considerations center
around whether or not to remain a member of the European Union. Right
now, Poland receives $2,000 per person from the EU which they have
used for infrastructure. However, to continue receiving such funding
they would need to adhere to the rules laid out by the EU.
Thomas’s talk was very interesting and opened our eyes to the progress
Poland has made and some of the critical issues facing it. We thank him
for joining us today.
