“Dear fellow Rotarians,I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday with your loved ones. I also hope you had a chance to do something special for the needy in your own community either through your club or on your own.

January is Rotary Awareness Month. It is a good time to renew our awareness of Rotary’s various Humanitarian and Educational programs and also to promote community’s awareness of Rotary’s programs. Karen Osbrey, our Publicity Chair from Putnam Club, is successful again in obtaining Rotary’s $10,000 Public Relations Grant for promoting Rotary awareness in our communities. Several PSAs are planned at selected radio stations in the coming months.

ROTARY AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLAR 2012-2013

The Ambassadorial Scholarship Program is one of Rotary’s outstanding educational programs. It provides an opportu-nity for a year of study in a foreign land for a deserving scholar. The program also allows Rotary Clubs to be active as a Hosting or Sponsoring Club to the scholars involved. Rotary Clubs should be proud to serve in these capacities as host-ing and sponsoring scholars are roles that only a few Clubs have the opportunity to participate in.

Hosting means that the scholar will be located in your area for the academic year. This provides unlimited opportuni-ties for the hosting club to involve their scholar in activities that could benefit both the area and the scholar. Scholars are anxious to share their knowledge and experience of home with others and learn about other parts of the world. This sharing could be done in any number of ways. The scholar may already have a planned presentation or may be working on a video presentation to cover all of the magical moments included in this once in a lifetime experience. In either case, meeting the scholar and hearing their presentation provides an excellent opportunity for world understanding to move forward in the hearts and minds of Rotarians and all who come in contact with the scholar.

Sponsoring a scholar provides similar opportunities but on a somewhat limited basis. The scholar that is being sponsored may be currently enrolled at a distant location and not as readily available for daily contact. It would still be possible to schedule time for the scholar to make visits to area Rotary Clubs and spend time with the Scholarship Committee to ensure a smooth transition when the exchange takes place. All of the Rotary Clubs in the District have contributed to the funding of the scholarship so providing time for as many clubs to meet the scholar is always a good idea. It gives them a chance to gain more knowledge about Rotary and greater understanding of Rotarians.

Most clubs look forward to hosting or sponsoring a scholar. Serving in these roles can only make your club more in-volved in the Rotary World and perhaps even make the world seem smaller. Over the years many scholars have become leaders in their home countries. Five years ago Francis Malloy of South Africa was attending Harvard University as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. Today he is the South African Ambassador to India. This is only one example of the potential of an Ambassadorial Scholar.

District 7890 applications for the 2012-2013 Scholarship will soon be available. If your club has an interest in sponsoring someone for this $26,000 scholarship, please read the application carefully, find a qualified candidate, help them through the application process and submit it to PDG Everett A. Watson, 6 Longview Drive, Storrs, CT 06268. Completed ap-plications must be received by June 1, 2011. Candidates will appear before the Scholarship Committee to support their application by a date to be selected in the summer of 2011.

In 2010, an earthquake delivered devastating damage to Haiti, killing thousands and destroying the homes of many more (Rotary 2011). Rotarians have played a big part in the providing aid to those affected by the earthquake and the overall recovery from such destruction.

2010 was a big year for Rotarians worldwide and rotary.org is recognizing the top ten stories for the year. Visit www.rotary.org to read these stories and more.

Stories include: the fight against Polio, progress on the challenge, the RI theme, the Palestinian club charter and more.

These Program discs are available free of charge to any Rotary Club in our District for airing at your Community Television stations. Some of these include Clark’s interview with RI President Ray Klinginsmith, and an interview on Polio Eradication. Please contact Chris at [email protected] to obtain a free copy.

Karen Osbrey, our Publicity Chair from Putnam Club, is successful again in obtaining Rotary’s $10,000 Public Relations Grant for promoting Rotary awareness in our communities. Several PSAs are planned at selected radio stations in the coming months.

I have posted a one page downloadable flow chart outlining the Rotary International Structure to show how we all fit into this global service organization, in very simple terms, on our District Website. You also have The Rotary Foundation Structure on the Website, to show how the Rotary Foundation programs are funded by you and how the monies are coming back to you through various Humanitarian and Educational programs.

I promised to send “Dream Cards” to all Rotarians when I visited you as part of my official visits to your clubs. These Dream Cards will allow you to choose the number of children you like to help save at $1 a child. They will be arriving at your mail boxes in the next several days. Please be kind and generous when choosing the number of children. The Dream Number is 240,000 children. As our District is 2,400 Rotarians strong, I am positive that this Dream will come true.

Based upon your support at our previous events, I am certain that we will have a very successful District conference on April 15 and 16. Registration Forms will be sent out in the next few days. It will also be posted on our District Website. This event is moderately priced compared to previous years to make it easy for you to attend. Very interesting and non-traditional programs are being planned and the Presidents and Presidents-elect will have their special Reception with the RI President-elect Kalyan Banerjee.

I want to conclude by wishing you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year.
