If you visit the Rotary.org website, you will notice that many of the articles and discussions revolve around polio: personal stories, different Rotary groups and their endeavours in the fight against polio, and educational articles about who is hit the hardest by Polio.

What makes this image different? An article in Rotary.org talks about how the Rotary and all of its’ funds given to fight Polio have helped achieve milestones toward ending Polio.

One example is the bivalent oral polio vaccine. This vaccine helps prevent the spreading of certain polio strands.

““There’s been the largest ever year-to-year drop in polio cases following the use of bOPV,” says Dr. Bruce Aylward, director of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) at the World Health Organization. (rotary.org, 2010)”

Though taking on a daunting task, like eradicating polio, can be overwhelming, small steps are making a huge difference in making it possible.

Neither rain nor wind nor fog could keep 260 Rotarians from attending the Foundation Dinner on November 4th at Chez Josef in Agawam, MA. The evening was filled with fellowship, great food and the inspiration of Our Rotary Foundation’s motto DO GOOD IN THE WORLD.

As emceed by PDG Bob MacDonald, the evening came off without any delays. PDG Karen Andrews and PDG Richard Seidman, respectively, gave reports on how efforts in annual giving to the Annual Programs Fund and Polio Plus were progressing. We are ahead of last year’s Annual Giving and most clubs in the district have either made a contribution or pledge to the Polio Plus campaign. PDG Herb Toback awarded banners to the top three clubs in Annual Giving for last year: Hartford, Farmington and Watertown, while PDG Larry Ottoson honored our new Major Donors, District Governor Prasad and Sree Menon from the Simsbury–Granby Club and Bill McGurk from the Rockville Club. New Bequest Society members, Art Schaller and Justine Moriarty both from the New Britain-Berlin Club, were recognized by Bob MacDonald.

The highlight of the evening was our keynote speaker District Governor Deepa Willingham from District 5240 in California. Deepa and her husband founded PACE, Promise of Assurance to Children Everywhere, a nonprofit California Corporation which was established in 2003 with two distinct missions:

• To nurture the educational, health, nutritional, social and cultural development of girls in impoverished areas of India and other parts of the world.

• To build, in Piyali Junction (outside Calcutta), the first prototype PACE Learning Center (PLC) complex to serve as a model for the delivery of these services all over the world.

The mission statement of PACE is: Changing the Face of Poverty, One Girl at a Time...One Village at a time...One Community at a time. PACE provides, a holistic approach to combating poverty by bringing literacy, health/immunization, clean water/sanitation, vocational training and banking/micro-lending to girls and women in the community.

Raffle ticket sales and the auction of a theme tie and scarf, donated by DGE Sue Klock and signed by Director Ken Grabeau, netted over $690 for the Rotary Foundation. It certainly was a memorable evening for our district and an inspiring night for us all.

Happy Anniversary To:

Congratulations - District 7890 Rotary eClub is 100% PHF! As of October 1, 2010, the Rotary eClub of Dis-trict 7890 is comprised entirely of Paul Harris Fellows. Three eClubbers are double Paul Harris Fellows, and three just became Paul Harris Fellows this month: Ruthie Napoleone, Maria Small and Conrad Sienkiewicz.

The Rotary eClub of District 7890 was chartered in 2004, and they have been an active club earning Presiden-tial Citations, contributing to the Rotary Foundation with Every Rotarian Every Year, awarding an annual Gold-en Tool Award scholarship, meeting Group Study Exchange teams in the district, supporting ongoing literacy and water projects, as well as securing a district grant to help fund a sewing machine project in India. Some of these projects were initiated by the eClub, while some were done by lending a hand to other Rotary clubs.

The eClub has an international membership, with members currently in Australia, India and various parts of the United States. The eClub allows for flexibility, as members are not bound to the schedule of attending their meetings at the same time and place each week: eClubbers meet online, and they can decided when to go online and communicate with other eClubbers. The eClub also offers convenient make-ups 24/7 at www.rotarye-club7890.org. All you need is an internet connection and an email address.

If you know of an active Rotarian who is considering dropping out of your club solely for the reason of being unable to attend the weekly meeting, please consider telling him/her about the eClub. If you know of a potential Rotarian who is considering joining Rotary but for whatever reason can not attend weekly meetings at the same place, tell him/her about the eClub.

The Rotary eClub of District 7890 is one of only a dozen eClubs in the world, and it makes District 7890 unique. The eClub takes the Rotary motto seriously: we are “Building communities, bridging continents.”

If you need a guest speaker to educate your club about the eClub, please contact Conrad Sienkiewicz, past president of the eClub, and he will gladly visit your club. He can be reached at [email protected] or 860 201-5632.

HAPPENINgS ‘ROuND THE DISTRICT...The Rotary Club of BROAD BROOK enjoyed a successful book give-away. The event was well attended and over 1,000 books found new homes. Many participants made a donation to the club and they raised over $550 which will be used to promote literacy during its annual Dessert with Santa event on December 7 where children of the community are invited to meet Santa, listen to a story and receive a free book.

EAST HARTFORD holds Koats for Kids event - The club’s annual Koats for Kids Program was recently held at the Burlington Coat Factory in East Hartford. The event is sponsored by the EAST HARTFORD ROTARY in conjunction with the East Hartford Health & Social Services Department. Approximately 60 youth between the ages of 5-12 were able to select a new warm winter coat for the upcoming season.

Rotarian David Galbraith from the FRANKLIN COUNTY ROTARY CLUB traveled to Honduras as a part of a team brought together by Pure Water for the World, a nonprofit organization. The group’s goal was to assist in the installation of water filtration systems and educating people in the importance of clean water. The cost of Dave’s trip was covered by the FRANKLIN COUNTY club. After his work in Honduras he hopes to continue helping other communities in need around the world. Dave is willing to speak to any Rotary club about his experience.. You can reach him at [email protected]

WINDSOR/WINDSOR LOCKS held their second Annual Foundation Party on November 13 to recognize members who have supported The Rotary Foundation in the past and invited all members to come and join the party while making a contribution to The Foundation. Over $4400 was collected for the Annual Giving Fund - good food, fellowship and fun were enjoyed by all who attended.

The Rotary Club of WASHINGTON held its annual Volunteer Reception at Bryon Town Hall in Washington, CT. The event honors all of the local emergency service and town government volunteers for their dedication to the community. Those in attendance participate in a straw poll to select a Volunteer of the Year for emergency services and town government. The Rotary Club of WASHINGTON makes a $250 donation in each of the winner’s names to a local charity of their choice. This year’s EMS winner was Claire Wilbur who chose the New Preston Boy’s and Girl’s Club as her charity. The T own Government winner was Rotarian Wayne Hileman who chose the Shepaug Friends of Music. Vernon (Rockville) Tops Manchester in Friendly Food Fight - mANCHESTER Rotarian David Skoczulek created a food drive in Manchester last year and it was estimated that they raised approximately $14,000 in food and donations. This year Manchester challenged Vernon (Rockville) to beat them. Teams consisting of emergency personnel, town employees, students, hospital personnel and the ROCKVILLE and mANCHESTER Rotary Clubs volunteered to collect food and money before Thanksgiving. Donations from Stop & Shop customers were loaded onto ambulance/rescue trucks and delivered to food banks in both communities. Two themes emerged from the competition, organizer Davie Skoczulek said - “First, of course, was that hunger is a true emergency. The second theme was that, in this food fight, there were only winners.”

The town of Farmington, CT has a long-standing relationship with the people of Sierra Leone in Western Africa. Because of this relationship, the Rotary Club of FARmINGTON elected to become a sister club with the Rotary Club of Freetown, Sierra Leone. Through association with the Freetown Rotary Club, the FARmINGTON club became aware of the magnitude of Freetown’s water problems. The club received a matching grant from Rotary International which allowed them to provide a total of $12,500 to teach local residents how to establish and maintain a sanitary water supply. Successful acquisition of the grant has been a coordinated effort of the Sierra Leone Task Force of First Church, the Freetown Rotary Club, the FARmINGTON Rotary Club and District 7890 Governors. Pictured - Rotarian Ednalou Ballard (l) and President Stephen Wasley (r) present a $12,500 check to Sierra Leone liaison Patricia Reville to be used for the Freetown water project.

The PUTNAm REGIONAL INTERACT CLUB participated in Operation Shoebox as part of their International Service. They bought small toys, candy and stocking stuffers, then packed then in re-usable shoe boxes to be distributed to needy children through Samaritan’s Purse.

“Dear fellow Rotarians,As Rotarians, we are committed to making our communities It was nice meeting many of you at the District Foundation Dinner. Our speaker DG Deepa Willingham delivered a very touching and inspirational speech. My heartfelt thanks to all those who attended the event and a special thank you to those who helped me organize and stage this event.

December is Family Month for Rotarians but it is also Family Month for most people in the world. Christmas, Hanukkah and Muharram are religious holidays celebrated with family. This is one time, most people, despite their million other commitments, make time to be with their families.

You may have heard me saying this before but I think it is worth repeating one more time; when we first join Rotary, we join as club members. Slowly we become Rotarians. As years go by, we develop emotional ties with other Rotarians and the Rotary becomes our second family.

When I joined Rotary a long time ago my children were very young and we had just moved to a new place. I remember saying no to a call to volunteer at my first chicken barbeque fundraiser by our club. My long work days did not give me a chance to spend any time with my family during the week and I wanted to spend the weekend with them. I also remember our Club President suggesting to me to bring the whole family to the park where the chickens were cooked and served. And that was exactly what I did. My wife had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people and my children had a great time playing in the park. It was a win - win situation.

As we are having more and more younger Rotarians in our clubs, it is necessary now, more than ever, to design community projects and fundraisers with Rotarian families in mind. These are great opportunities for the families to spend quality time together and also to expose children to the importance of volunteerism and service.

Our District Conference is fast approaching. Please reserve April 15 and 16 for this exciting event. Rotary International President-elect Kalyan Banerjee is the RI President’s representative at the Conference. Club Presidents, who were at the Installation Dinner, will have their second chance to shake hands with the incoming Rotary International President and take a picture with him at this event. Presidents – elect will have the chance to meet and greet their International President. For the presidents, this is again history making; meet and greet two incoming International Presidents in the same year. For the Presidents– elect, it is very unlikely that you will get a chance to shake hands and take a photograph with your International President again. Please do not miss this great opportunity!

I wish you and your loved ones a healthy and happy holiday season.
