Greeting Rotarians and Friends,

Wow what a week, the first female Prime Minister of Australia and now the Rotary Club of Richmond has inducted a female President! Not a first for our Club though as I follow on from Past Presidents’ Judy Nettleton (our first lady President), Sue Bolton and Janice Kesterton (2 years in a row!).

I’m sure Julia will be quoted often for her following statement, as it reflects my own thoughts:

‘There will be some days I delight you. There may be some days I disappoint you. On every day I will be working my absolute hardest for you.' Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, Thursday, 24th June 2010

I will approach my role as President of the Club with passion and integrity and will look forward to working with all of you over the next year. It will be my aim to have fun, enjoy fellowship and value the friendships that Rotary endears.

The Changeover Dinner last Monday night at Riversdale Golf Club was a great occasion! It was also time for us to thank Past President Michael O’Sullivan for leading our Club successfully to the new Rotary year. We will all miss Sally’s welcoming smile at meetings and functions and will look forward to her attendance whenever time permits. Michael and Sally can now enjoy a well-earned break although I know that their commitment to the Club will continue through their ongoing involvement in 2010-2011. Michael has demonstrated the values of Rotary, ‘Service above Self’, through his hard work and commitment to Rotary and our Club.

We warmly welcomed our newest member inducted on the night, Kristen Widdop; who will join the New Generations Committee as she has a particular interest in young people.

The Club Changeover was also an opportunity for us to look forward to the year ahead; I will encourage your continued enthusiasm for the Club, for our projects, meetings, events and activities. It’s vital for us to continue to be a vibrant and exciting Club and I hope we’ll all be looking at what is coming up - because we’ll not want to miss anything! Your friends, colleagues and family will always be made welcome.

It is important for the success of our projects that we all get involved and assist our Committee Chairs achieve the project outcomes. I will encourage the committees to meet regularly throughout the year. Having active committees helps us to share the load and truly work as a team. This year I’ve allocated each member to a committee to promote an inclusive approach to all that we do. The Club Forums will be held to provide an opportunity for the Committee Chairs to report back to the Club and keep us all abreast of the projects and/or programs current status.

I would like to wish Rotarian John Benger a successful trip to Timor. John will be traveling with a paediatric cardiology team working on behalf of ROMAC, they’re exploring opportunities to perform surgery in Timor and throughout Asia. He leaves on the 19th July and we’ll look forward to John’s report back to the Club on his return.

Until next week!

O.M.G! – THE TIGER RAG TEAM TAKE OFF THE BEST BULLETIN AWARD FOR A CLUB WITH 36-55 MEMBERS!

When announced at the District Changeover lunch held at the Crown Palladium Sunday 27th May, 2010, and simultaneously flashed on to the screens placed around the room, the 2 tables of Richmond Rotarians cheered as DG Colin Muir read out the name of the Rotary Club of Richmond as the winner in the Bulletin category for a Club with 35-55 members!

Tony Webb, Editor, and Annie Wysham, Sub-Editor (pictured by Gordon Cheyne - Networker) were proudly presented with a framed Bulletin Award Certificate by DG Colin -’This certificate of high commendation goes to the Rotary Club of Richmond’.

Sadly, Chew Chan, Tiger Rag photographer and John Griffith Web Master and Chew’s ‘dark-room’ assistant, were not present.

Selection for the best club bulletin was based on the following criteria: Design, layout, readability and overall visual appeal; interesting content including information from RI, District and Cluster Clubs; Club Presidents message and information on RI monthly theme; calendar of upcoming events and summary of weekly meetings; pictorial highlights of Club activities and events; overall appeal to members.

Other Bulletin Awards went to the Rotary Club of North Melbourne – Club with up to 35 members; the Rotary Club of Footscray – Club with over 55 members; plus Footscray took out the Best Bulletin Overall prize. The Tiger Rag Team warmly congratulates them on their great achievements. One year on it was good to know we’ve sure got this Tiger by the tail and are prepared to give it a fair shake to make it an award-winner for yet another Rotary year!

[This is the 3rd year in a row that an RCR bulletin has won this award, the previous 2 being achieved under the editorship of John Liddell 2007-2008 and 2008-2009.]

CELEBRATING IN STYLE AT THE 2010 CHANGEOVER DINNER! Reporter: Annie Wysham, Sub-Editor

Our annual ‘night of nights’ was a celebration of all that is marvellous about our Club! 90 people attended our 2010 Changeover Dinner held at the newly-renovated, very swish Club rooms at the Riversdale Golf Club. A marvellous menu, fine wines, fantastic fellowship and a great programme made it another night to remember in the Richmond Rotary calendar. The formal hand-over at 9.30pm from President Michael O’Sullivan to the 47th President, Jo Cowling, focused us on the importance of the evening.

The evening’s programme was kept on track by the capable Chair, Melissa Carfax-Foster. DG Iven Mackay proposed the toast to Rotary International and PDG Judy Nettleton delivered the Response on behalf of Rotary International. PE Rob Mactier proposed the Toast to Partners and Friends of Richmond Rotary. The induction of a new member, Kristen Widdop, by President Michael, supported by PDG Judy, Kristen’s mentor, was another highlight, with congratulations immediately proferred by those present.

Congratulations then also flowed for the many awardees whose achievements and Club contributions, arising from Michael’s Presidential year, were recognized and acknowledged. (See article page 4) In his final brief delivery as President before the hand-over, Michael particularly thanked not only the Members and Friends, sponsors and supporters of the Richmond Rotary Club, but also the ‘unsung heroes of our Club - the Rotarians who are involved with District commitments’.(See page 6) He then referred us all to his written report in the Annual Report 2009-2010 distributed on the night and available to all Members at the next meeting.

In response, our newly-inducted President, Jo Cowling, had our full attention when she said, “I am truly honoured to become the President of our Club. Tonight we can celebrate the achievements of our Club over the past 12 months and look forward to the year ahead with enthusiasm and passion. Tonight is a night to remember!” She then followed with the formal presentations to PP Michael and Sally O’Sullivan and conveyed the messages received from Charter Member, PP Geoff Clarke (1967-1968) and Joan, PP Les Harrison (1990-91) and Joan, Ailsa Wilson (PP Max, 1999-2000), Chris Embury (PP Alan 1989-1990), amongst others that wished us all well in the year ahead.

President Jo invited her Club Leadership Team for 2010-2011 to stand as she introduced them all one by one. In closing she stated, “I would like to finish tonight with a powerful statement – We are ordinary people brought together through Rotary to accomplish extraordinary things.” (A detailed report of President’s Jo’s Changeover speech will be included in the Tiger Rag of the 12th July.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT 2009-2010 – PRAISE FOR ‘THE UNSUNG HEROES’ -

The unsung heroes of our Club are the Rotarians who are involved with District commitments. Many hours are spent being involved with District projects outside of our Club that have a benefit to all Rotarians and others. This involvement is often unheralded and our Club is indeed proud of their dedication to Rotary itself.

Footnote: The Paul Harris Fellow recognition was established in 1957 to honour Rotary founder, Paul Harris, and as a way to show appreciation for club contributions of US $1,000 to Rotary Foundation's charitable, humanitarian and educational programs. Every Paul Harris Fellow receives a pin, medallion and a certificate when he or she becomes a Fellow. This identifies the Paul Harris Fellow as an advocate of the Foundation's goals of world peace and international understanding. In Australia in particular, it is also the recognition of outstanding service to our community, unprecedented commitment to club life and to ‘service above self’.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S CHANGEOVER 2010 – Reporter: Annie Wysham Sub-Editor

In the elegant setting of the Crown Paladium, on Sunday, 27 th June, 2010, more than 450 Rotarians and friends heard our 2009-2010 District Governor, Colin Muir, sum up his past Rotary year and thank his District team for their dedication, support and commitment. He showed an encouraging video from the recent RI Convention in Montreal on the progress of the PolioPlus Campaign before presenting the Annual District Awards. In summary, the DG expressed his confidence that the ‘Future of Rotary is in Safe Hands’.

The incoming DG, Iven Mackay, was then presented with the regalia of office and in return he presented DG Colin with his PDG Badge.

It was a great send-off luncheon for DG Colin Muir and Pauline; and for the new DG Iven Mackay and Marilyn (pictured) and the 2010-2011 District team, a welcome they’ll well remember to their new District commitments.

The afternoon's entertainment of good ol’ Country music was performed by Dianna Corcoran, Country singer/songwriter. It was followed by a surprise visit from the Victoria Police Pipe Band - Scottish bagpipes and drums in a stirring rendition of Scottish tunes in celebration of the Mackay heritage! 16 people from Richmond Rotary attended. The luncheon was ably hosted by the RC Toorak.

SPEAKERS’ CORNER: MEETING 2100, 5TH JULY 2010

Guest Speaker: Jenny Davies Topic: Beyond the Facade: Flinders Street, More Than Just A Railway Station Synopsis:

Jenny has written a book entitled ‘Beyond the Facade: Flinders Street, More Than Just a Railway Station’ which is the result of the diverse history she has uncovered. Most of what she has written has never been published before. The hundreds of photos and illustrations have also mostly been hidden in archives. Having spent several years researching the social, commercial and architectural history of the station she welcomes the opportunity to share some of her findings with our members. Her presentation involves a brief history of the decisions relating to the building of the current station,

some interesting facts about the design and construction, and a profile of the people involved. Her main interest, however, has been in the many and varied anecdotal stories told to her by the users of the station whether it be for commercial, social or recreational business.

“The activities of the VRI and the variety of excellent facilities provided on the third floor,” she says, “can be remembered particularly clearly by people of the generations that often belong to organisations such as Rotary.”

At a Rotary meeting in London, a visiting Rotarian, who happened to be a wealthy American, announced that he had lost his wallet containing £10,000 and would give a reward of £100 to the person who finds it. From the back of the hall a Scottish voice shouted, "I'll give £150!"

NEW LEADERSHIP AND NEW BEGINNINGS: JULY IS WHEN THE NEW ROTARY YEAR BEGINS –

As the 2010 RI Convention in Montréal, Québec, Canada, drew to a close on Sunday 23rd June, 2010, the [then] Rotary International President-Elect Ray Klinginsmith outlined his plans for his term, which began on the 1st July,2010….

Klinginsmith asked Rotarians to apply ‘cowboy logic’ and make Rotary clubs ‘bigger, better, and bolder’! The fundamental principles of cowboy logic are ‘taking pride in your work, talking less and saying more, doing what has to be done, and remembering that some things just aren’t for sale’, he explained during the closing plenary session.

"I believe the way for Rotary to remain viable and vibrant in the next century is to help our clubs to be bigger, better, and bolder," Klinginsmith said. "The

clubs are the life and breath of Rotary. Therefore, it is clear to me that my job is to help the District Governors to help the clubs. We can do it, and we will do it if all of us follow the simple solution of cowboy logic."

To read more of the [then] RI President-Elect Ray Klinginsmith’s presentation during the closing plenary session at the 2010 RI Convention go to: http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/conv10june23_closingplen.aspx

Janet Wang (Chris Wang, RC Melbourne and 2009-2010 Assistant Governor Rotary District 9800 – Heritage Cluster Group) _____________________________________________________________ What was the first Rotary function you attended and your memories of it? More than 21 years ago I half-heartedly went along to the first Rotary Club of Melbourne Christmas dinner, still wondering why Chris wanted to join a ‘seniors’ organization! To my utter joy it was a wonderful evening; all the ‘seniors’ were the most entertaining, friendly and welcoming group of people I had ever met! Nothing has changed to this day.

What keeps you committed to Rotary itself? I never cease to be amazed and impressed at the commitment, energy and dedication to all the causes that our Rotary Clubs get involved in. Added to that is the fun and laughter that’s a natural part of it! I can’t help but be swept along with it.

What’s been your favourite Heritage Cluster involvement over the last 2 years and why? That has to be the ‘Rochester Project’. [City Meets Country – Country Meets City] How can anything be better than enjoying the by-product of a project which involved all the [Heritage Group of 5] Rotary Clubs working closely together to achieve a goal; that by-product being - making so many friends in the Heritage Cluster and getting to hear and understand the personal stories of both happiness and hardship from so many of our country friends.

What’s on your ‘wish-list’ for you both now that Chris will no longer be the Assistant Governor? No ‘wish-list’ as such; just a little time to devote to our grand-children, go to movies, opera and the NGV. More travel would be a good idea too!

What keeps you awake at night? Nothing in particular thank goodness! (Over-eating isn’t good though!)

ON

THE

SPOT

There was a man who had worked all of his life, had saved all of his money, and was a real miser

when it came to his money. Just before he died, he said to his wife, "When I die, I want you to take

all my money and put it in the casket with me. I want to take my money to the after life with me."

And so he got his wife to promise him with all of her heart that when he died, she would put all of the

money in the casket with him. Well, he died. He was stretched out in the casket, his wife was sitting

there in black, and her friend was sitting next to her. When they finished the ceremony, just before

the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said, "Wait just a minute!"

She had a box with her, she came over with the box and put it in the casket. Then the undertakers

locked the casket down, and they rolled it away. So her friend said, "Girl, I know you weren't fool

enough to put all that money in there with your husband." The loyal wife replied,"Listen, I'm a

Christian . I can't go back on my word. I promised him that I was going to put that money in that

casket with him." " You mean to tell me you put that money in the casket with him!! !!!?"

"I sure did," said the wife. "I got it all together, put it into my account and wrote him a check. If he

can cash it, he can spend it."
