Rotary Dist rict D9800 Club number 18323 LAST WEEK: Natasha Holt - Peace Scholar Following a description of the R.I. Rotary Peace Centers Program by PDG John Davis, Natasha gave an insight to her quest to be involved in the program as follows: “With an Arts degree from Monash University in Creative Media and Gender Studies, I pursued my interest in social justice and moved to China. As an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development I helped implement an HIV/AIDS information exchange program in Beijing, where I was exposed to clients trafficked for sex. I was deeply moved by their struggles after sexual and gender-based violence, and discrimination due to their HIV status. This confirmed my commitment to working in the field of sexual health. “I have just completed six months in the red-light districts of Bangkok, Thailand, working to increase access to sexual health and rights-based services for male and transgender sex workers. “As a Rotary World Peace Fellow I will study Social Work at The University of North Carolina, with practical experience and classroom learning. I believe a Masters degree will enable me to condense my field experience, expanding my knowledge in an academic environment, and provide me with new theoretical tools for the communities I work within. I will also attend Peace and Conflict workshops with the Rotary Peace Fellow cohorts at UNC and Duke University. “I anticipate that the studies during my fellowship will enable me to secure employment from which I can have significant leverage in promoting peace and conflict resolution; by supporting greater HIV/AIDS awareness, improving research and advocacy in the areas of gender-based and sexual violence, and by addressing social justice issues in developing and post-conflict countries.” After taking questions from the floor, Chairman Peter thanked Natasha for her presentation and presented her with a small memento from members of our Club. ‘PIN IT FOR POLIO’ DAY

Rotary International has led the battle against this dreaded disease for

more than 40 years. Next PIN IT FOR POLIO Day is February 23rd 2013.

Many Rotary clubs are continuing to purchase and distribute the END

POLIO NOW pins. We must remember that no child is safe until polio is

completely eradicated from our world.

Through Pin it For Polio to date, Rotary has raised in excess of $31,000

for the Rotary Foundation. More info at:

July is Rotary Leadership Month

MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING

Free Youth Mental Health First Aid Training is being offered to parents and

carers of 12 – 18 year old students attending secondary schools participating

in the Live4life initiative.

The program aims to improve the mental health knowledge, skills and

attitudes in our community, and to educate participants how to assist

adolescents who are developing a mental illness or in a mental health crisis.

The training is not suitable for adolescents - it is an educational training

session. For further information contact Laura Garner, (03)5422-0333 or

email to [email protected], or at www.live4life.org.au

R.I. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

‘When we see the needs of others as more important than our own

needs - when we focus on a shared goal that is for the good of all -

this changes everything. It changes how we relate to the world. It

changes our priorities - and it changes how we understand the idea of

peace.’ ….Sakuji Tanaka

DID YOU KNOW?

That all Probus Clubs are sponsored by a Rotary Club, and on formation

become affiliated to the Probus Centre – South Pacific?

Clubs are, however, autonomous and are responsible for their own operations

through a committee elected annually.

Rotary’s role with Probus is the formation of new clubs, support of existing

clubs and Probus clubs experiencing difficulties.
