Rosewood Arts Centre enriches the quality of life for residents of Kettering and the greater Dayton area. Through classes, gallery exhibitions, theatre performances, drop-in facilities, artist studios and special events, there is something for everyone! A division of the City of Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, Rosewood is supported in part by the City of Kettering, the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SIGNING INTERPRETER AVAILABLESign Language interpreters are available for Rosewood classes to our patrons with hearing impairments. Sign Language interpreters may be requested for Rosewood classes. Please allow at least two weeks’ notice and call Rosewood at (937) 296-0294.

CLASS CANCELLATIONRosewood Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel any class and to substitute faculty when necessary. Classes will be canceled three working days prior to the starting date when there is insufficient enrollment.

ARTIST STUDIOSArtist studios are available at Rosewood A r t s C e n t r e f o r a r t i s t s with an active practice and a commitment t o s h a r i n g their work with the Kettering c o m m u n i t y . Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed as studio spaces become available. Studio spaces start at $85/month for Kettering residents. Ready to bring your work to the next level? Take advantage of affordable and professionally equipped spaces. Call (937) 296-0294 for available hours and required orientations or prerequisites.

VISITOR POLICY: All participants and observers must pay open studio fees to stay longer than 30 minutes. Children under 5 years old are not permitted in open studio. Those under 16 must be supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older (no more than two children per adult). All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, must sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-in-progress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended.

STUDENT POLICY: Adult students currently enrolled in studio classes will receive a student pass card for four sessions of studio time. Students staying over 30 minutes after the end of class must sign in and use this pass card.

LOCKER RENTAL: Lockers are available for rental on a pre-pay six-month or yearly basis. Six-month: $20/resident; $25/non-resident; Yearly: $35/resident; $45 non-resident.

CERAMIC STUDIO: Clay fee of $20 includes 25 pounds of clay and related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home. You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Attendance at a free ceramic studio orientation is required of all first-time participants.

DARKROOM: Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes, and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment.

GLASS STUDIO: The glass studio is available to students who wish to finish class work, have attended a class previously or have prior experience in cold or warm glass. Participants must be at least 16 years old and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Fees for kiln or torch usage are $5 respectively for up to 3 hours.

The City of Kettering established a permanent art collection to commemorate the renovation of the Government Center at 3600 Shroyer Road. Featuring several of the most accomplished visual artists of Kettering and the Miami Valley, the collection represents the natural world, from Kettering’s own Hills and Dales Metropark to the nearby Clifton Gorge. This collection of over eighty works includes black and white photographs, colorful oil paintings and multi-layered ink prints. Located throughout the offices of 3600 Shroyer, the Regional Art Collection is accessible to the public by special appointment and scheduled tours. Guided tours of the City of Kettering Government Center Art Collection are scheduled on the second Tuesday of the month from 5 to 6 p.m. and by special appointment. Tours must be booked at least one week in advance by calling Rosewood Arts Centre at (937) 296-0294 or emailing [email protected]. Advanced Theatre InstructionAge(s) 9 – 15

This course builds on the skills gained in Basic Theatre Instruction. We will focus on proper breathing techniques, voice projection, speech and diction exercises, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces), developing a character, and performing a short play. The final play will be performed before an audience. Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for the depth of work required. Prerequisite: Basic Theatre Instruction. This is a prerequisite for Kettering Children’s Theatre.

Kettering Children’s TheatreAge(s) 10 – 15

The Kettering Children’s Theatre Production is a youth theatre program for elementary through junior high students. The theatre program produces two plays per year. Prerequisites to this production are the Basic Theatre Instruction and/or Advanced Theatre Instruction classes at Rosewood Arts Centre or by permission of the instructor. If you have previous theatre experience but have not taken either class at Rosewood you may perform a monologue at auditions. The monologue must be memorized. Monologues will be available in the Rosewood Arts Centre front office. Students are required to make a commitment to three rehearsal sessions per week. All potential participants are encouraged to take at least one acting class or a summer camp. Auditions will be held Saturday, January 16 at 11 a.m. Registration deadline for the fall production is January 16, 2016.

A parent meeting is scheduled for the first session on January 19, 5 to 6 p.m. All cast members need to attend and should have a parent or guardian in attendance.

Meet youth educator, Jane Brennan!A Dayton-based artist and art educator, Jane holds a B.A. in Art Education from the University of Dayton. Having taught in a number of different settings, she has experience with a variety of art media and age groups. A Rosewood instructor for several years, Jane has taught clay, painting, drawing and more in everything from summer camps to Homeschool Art.

Jane also enjoys helping out at Rosewood’s annual events, especially A Rosewood Holiday in December and Art on the Playground in May.

Rosewood ParticipantsAll artwork unclaimed after several weeks runs the risk of being lost, misplaced, broken or mistakenly taken by other students. Please check the art studio for your work within two weeks of the end of class. Artwork unclaimed after 30 days will be discarded or considered a donation to Rosewood.

Reduction FiringGet unique and beautiful glaze results using our reduction kiln and cone 10 specific glazes. Patrons may use up to 3 cubic feet of space per firing included in the cost of class or open studio use. Cost of additional space needed in a single firing is $20 per cubic ft. Firings are scheduled when enough work is generated to fill the kiln (generally once a month). Anyone interested in firing work in the reduction kiln may sign up for an individual orientation in the Rosewood office.

Introduction to Ceramics: Wheel ThrowingAge(s) 16 +

This class focuses on the basics of creating forms on the potter’s wheel. Students explore making traditional tableware including bowls, cups and mugs, with self-directed projects for more intermediate students. Comic Book Blitz Fundraiser

Witness the intense process of a creating a comic book live! A process that typically takes weeks is condensed to a single day. A team of professional artists and creators will collaborate to make this comic come to life. Copies of the comic will be available for preorder. The original artwork and comic pages will be auctioned off. Donations to the cause are also welcomed. Proceeds from the event will go to the Kettering Parks Foundation fund. ADULT/TEEN MUSICKettering Civic BandAge(s) 18 +

The Kettering Civic Band (KCB) originated in 1959 as a 12-member ensemble. This all-volunteer band is dedicated to encourage, promote and perpetuate the playing of band music for the enjoyment of listeners and members. The band boasts a membership of approximately 70 members of all ages and professions in vocations in and outside of music. Membership is open to all post-high school musicians. The KCB rehearses on Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. year-round.

Meet creative writing instructor, Allison M. Dickson!Allison is the author of two published novels, horror thriller, Strings and the dystopian epic, The Last Supper, as well as several dozen short stories. She has published her short stories both independently and in magazines and anthologies, including Apex.

Allison teaches several creative writing classes here at Rosewood, including Compelling Writing Skills, The Art of the Short Story, Genre Fiction Fundamentals and more.

Rosewood Arts Centre, in partnership with We Care Arts, has expanded its youth programming to reach out to young children on the Autism Spectrum. This fall, the first Art with Buddies class was offered to children ages three through six and their parents, providing them with the opportunity to work together to develop creative projects and strategies for use in the classroom and at home.

“Art with Buddies was inspired by my son Liam. He, like the kids we want to work with, has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),” explained Andrew Dailey, Program Supervisor at Rosewood Art Centre. “As a parent, I saw too few opportunities to get him involved in art classes that were tailored to his specific sensory needs. Our goal was to bring a sensory-friendly art class experience to parents of kids with ASD at a nominal cost.”

Established more than 30 years ago, We Care Arts is a Kettering-based organization that provides people with emotional and developmental

disabilities the opportunity, space and training to create artwork, while developing independence and building self-esteem.

“We Care Arts has been instrumental in designing the program, as well as procuring the grant funding to make it all happen,” Dailey said.

The classes, held once a week at Rosewood Arts Centre, encourage children to create art while exploring the sensory experiences of sight, taste, touch, smell and feel. Parents learn art-based activities and creative tools to help their child’s development outside of the classroom.

“We don’t stress the ‘sit down and pay attention’ aspect,” said Jess Kucinski, an instructor for Art with Buddies and We Care Arts. “Rather, children are free to focus in whatever way is best for them.”

FEESFull payment for classes must be made at the time of registration. Resident fees are for those participants who either live or work within the Kettering city limits. Program fees for non-Kettering residents will be an additional 25 percent or $5, whichever is greater (not to exceed $10). Fees will be refunded if a class is full.

PAYMENT METHODSThe City will accept cash, personal checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) and money orders for the payment of fees. Please note which of these forms of payment is acceptable for the method of registration you choose. The City cannot accept any debit cards for payment. The City will charge a $25 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Checks should be made payable to: City of Kettering.

CONFIRMATIONFor Mail-in, Drop-off and Fax RegistrationsOnce we have processed your registration, we will email you a confirmation showing which classes you are enrolled. If we do not have an email on file we will mail. If we were unable to place you in a class, the fee for that class will be placed in your family’s household account as an account credit, and this, too, will be noted on your confirmation. You may:

• use the credit for future courses; or• request a full refund. All refunds will be paid by City check; please

allow two weeks for processing.

WAITING LIST PROCEDUREWaiting lists are a source of contact and do not guarantee you will receive a call back. You will receive a call back only if a space becomes available. If you ask to add your name to a waiting list for a closed class, it:

• Gives us a name and phone number in the event of a cancellation.• Supplies us with names and phone numbers in case a new class

is added.• Does not limit you from registering for any other open classes.

LATE REGISTRATION Late registrations will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. After the second class meeting, no registrations will be accepted. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee.

REFUND POLICY — OUR COMMITMENT TO YOUWe strive for positive experiences and excellence in everything we do. All refunds will be made according to the following guidelines.If you have attended one of our classes or purchased a pass and are dissatisfied, call us. We will offer a prorated refund.If you were unable to attend a set of classes, we will try to transfer you to another section. Otherwise, we will offer a 50% household credit of the class price.Special consideration will be given for life altering situations.Refund requests must be made within 30 days of a registered program’s end date (effective January 1, 2016).Refunds will be issued by City check, refunded to the credit card used during the original transaction, or issued via a household credit. Your household credit balance will be noted on your receipt. This credit can be: used for future enrollments or pass registrations or refunded via City check upon request. Refunds issued via City check will follow the Finance Department’s bill-paying schedule and be issued by City check. There will be no cash refunds. This policy does not apply to facility rentals.
