Open studio sessions are designed to allow artists and craftspeople the opportunity to work on their own in a creative environment with the necessary equipment perhaps not available to them at home. The studios are open for independent work Monday through Saturday. Hours are determined by class schedule. Call (937) 296-0294.VISITOR POLICY: All participants and observers must pay open studio fees to stay longer than 15 minutes. Children under five years old are not permitted in open studio. Those under 16 must be supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older (no more than two children per adult). All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, should sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-in-progress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended.STUDENT POLICY: Students currently enrolled in classes will receive a student pass card. This card is used for studio time needed to develop skill and complete projects. Students staying over 30 minutes after the class period must sign in and use this pass card.OPEN STUDIO FEES: Pottery – Sculpture – Painting – Enameling – Glass – DanceDrop-in fee per visit: $4/resident; $8/non-resident; Discount card (10 visits): $30/resident; $60/non-resident.Supplies are not included in open studio fees. LOCKER RENTAL: Lockers are available for rental on a pre-pay six-month or yearly basis. Six-month prepaid: $20/resident; $25/non-resident; Yearly prepaid: $35/resident; $45/non-resident.POTTERY STUDIO: Clay fee of $19 includes 25 pounds of clay and related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home. You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded. Attendance at a free pottery studio orientation is required of all first-time participants. Please call (937) 296-0294 with your name and phone number.GLASS KILN: Time slots must be reserved before firing. There is a $9 firing fee per three-hour session, along with the open studio fee. Non-firing glass studio users pay the open studio fee. Supply your own tools. The glass studio is open to the community following a Rosewood Arts Centre class.DARKROOM: The darkroom is available for use by individuals during regular Rosewood Arts Centre hours, except when classes are scheduled. A notice is posted announcing class dates and times. Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes, and attend a Rosewood orientation and familiarization session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment. Darkroom fee per visit: $5/resident; $10/non-resident; Discount card (10 visits): $35/resident; $70/non-resident.

Reminder: Discount cards must be processed by the individual holder. Discount cards are for individual use only and not to be shared among friends or family.

The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is pleased to offer a signing interpreter for hearing-impaired patrons who want to take a class at Rosewood Arts Centre or the Kettering Recreation Complex. Please give us three weeks’ notice to schedule the interpreter and call 296-0294.

Rosewood Arts Centre provides a pleasant, creative and comfortable atmosphere for group or individual needs for meeting space. Meeting rooms include requested table and chair arrangements, as well as large slide or projector screens. All rooms are equipped with cloak and sink areas. Parking is free, convenient and safe. Applications for meeting space are accepted continuously for daily and quarterly rentals. If your organization or group has been searching for an affordable meeting place, call 296-0294.

DANCE APPARELDance classes, such as ballet and tap, are conducted in the Rosewood Arts Centre dance studio. Street shoes are not allowed on the dance studio floor. Slippers or socks with treads are safer than socks. Tap shoes or hard-soled shoes are required for tap. Dance shoes are available at many local retailers and local dance apparel stores. Leotards and tights are optional as well. Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move easily. Only the spring session includes a dance review.Ballroom Dance and Line Dance classes are held at the Charles I. Lathrem Senior Center. YOUTH/TEEN MUSIC

The Kettering Children's ChoirThe Kettering Children's Choir was founded in 1986 and includes over 200 singers from 30 communities within nine Miami Valley counties. The auditioned choirs are for ages 8 through 18. The Choraleers, Chorus, Chorale, and Concert Choir sing music of all periods and types, from Renaissance to contemporary, and rehearse weekly at Rosewood Arts Centre. The Cappella, a regional high school honors choir, is a college prep program in residence at Wright State University.

The Concert Choir and the Cappella tour nationally and internationally. Past performance tour highlights include touring and performances throughout Austria, England, Wales and Germany; in concert at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.; Epcot Candlelight Processional with Disney Orchestra in Orlando; a tour to Australia to perform with four children's choirs; participation in Mass at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy; and a tour to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and Hong Kong, China.

YOUTH/TEEN DRAMATIC ARTS

Kettering Children's TheatreGrades 5 to 9 or a minimum age of 10 years old

The Kettering Children's Theatre Production is a youth theatre program for elementary through junior high students. The theatre program produces two plays per year. Prerequisites to this production are the Basic Theatre Instruction and/or Advanced Theatre Instruction classes at Rosewood Arts Centre or by permission of the instructor.

Students are required to make a commitment to three rehearsal sessions per week. Parent participation is welcomed.

Registration deadline for the fall production is August 27, 2013. Registration forms must be dropped off at Rosewood Arts Centre.

Fall production dates are November 8, 9, 10 and 15, 16, 17.

In this class, students will explore both the handbuilding and the wheel method of making pottery. Class size is limited to nine so that students may develop skills with the equipment. CAMP ROSEWOOD 2013 SUMMER CAMPS

Camp Rosewood expands this year with special Camper Sampler and Camp Remix one-day workshop camps to start and finish the 2013 summer camp season. Camp Rosewood will also feature Art & Animals and Art & Nature camps that will take place at the new Habitat Environmental Center in Kettering. These camps will focus on the intersection between art and the natural environment. In addition to these special camps, a select group of other art camps will take short field trips to the Habitat Environmental Center (transportation provided).The summer session will be held from May 30 to August 6, 2013. Keep in mind some camps do fill up early, so register soon!Fees: One-Day Camps: $30/Kettering resident; $40/non-

resident Half-Day Weeklong Camps: $80/Kettering resident;

$90/non-resident Full-Day Weeklong Camps: $145/Kettering resident;

$155/non-residentAll camps include class time and a morning snack. All full-day camps include a lunch break and full-day weeklong camps a daily trip to Adventure Reef Water Park in the afternoon, weather permitting. Campers should wear clothes that can get messy in the classroom. Campers must also bring their own insulated sack lunch, beverage, sunscreen and swim gear every day. Art materials, morning snacks and camp T-shirts are included in the camp fee. Parents are required to complete a camp registration form, along with a health and a swim permission form (see new online health form option at www.ketteringoh.org). ONE-DAY CAMP WORKSHOPS

Camp Rosewood offers a variety of one-day camp workshops. We expand this year with special b r a n d - n e w C a m p e r Sampler and Camp Remix one-day camp workshops to start and finish the 2013 summer camp season. C a m p e r S a m p l e r workshops kick off the summer camp season the week before camp starts. They offer multiple art-making stations that provide a wide range of different projects to try for potential campers. Camp Remix workshops are at the end of the camp season and offer a chance for campers to revisit some of their favorite art projects of the summer. Camp Remix will offer multiple art-making stations featuring “highlight” projects from the 2013 summer camp season. This is a great opportunity to sneak in a little more art and summer fun before heading back to school. The week of July 1 to July 5, we offer one-day workshops in various media. All one-day camp workshops are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration fee includes all art supplies, professional instruction and a snack. Campers must bring their own insulated lunch sack with a lunch and beverage. Parents must fill out health forms before child can participate in camp activities. Camps eligible for extended care.

Art on the Commons is a juried display and sale of fine arts and fine crafts featuring over one hundred artists from Ohio and surrounding states working in clay, drawing, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, leather, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture and wood. Located in the Civic Commons in Kettering, Art on the Commons features live music and entertainment and concessions in a scenic outdoor park of reflecting pools and paved walkways. Art on the Commons has been awarded recognition from Sunshine Artist Magazine as one of the top U.S. festivals. Art on the Commons is sponsored in part by the City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and the Ohio Arts Council.

Open studios in pottery, glass, darkroom, dance and paint-ing will be open without charge to Kettering residents each Friday during the summer quarter of 2013. An adult must accompany children under 16 years, and participants must be at least five years of age. Orientations or classes must be completed before studio use in pottery, glass and the darkroom. All studio users must register in the office prior to studio use.

As You Like It presents a world fraught with turmoil; the kindly elder duke has been usurped and cast out into the pastoral forest of Arden, homeless and bereft of lordship. Meanwhile, the whip-smart Rosalind is forced to extreme measures to teach tongue-tied Orlando, the object of her affections, how to woo with charm, manners, and grace. Raku WorkshopAge(s) 16+This workshop is on the process of glazing and firing specific to Raku. Previous instruction and experience in either handbuilding or throwing clay is required, as the instructor will be presenting glazing and firing only. Three sessions are offered; introduction to Raku, glazing, firing and cleanup. Potters can fire one 18" high pot, six 6" wide pots or something in between. Maximum width is 18". The first meeting is required even if you are familiar with Raku. Glazes will be provided. Bring a covered dish for the potluck lunch on the last day. DANCE APPARELDance classes, such as ballet and tap, are conducted in the Rosewood Arts Centre dance studio. Street shoes are not allowed on the dance studio floor. Slippers or socks with treads are safer than socks. Tap shoes or hard-soled shoes are required for tap. Dance shoes are available at many local retailers and local dance apparel stores. Leotards and tights are optional as well. Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move easily. It looks at the eight most popular self-publishing websites and explains the procedures for posting a manuscript on each. The course also details the 18 tasks that must be performed in conjunction with placing your book on the web, so that your sales will be far above the norm. It explains what skill sets must be employed in order to perform all of the 18 tasks. The seminar also explains how to analyze whether or not your story-line is appropriate for the web and how to prepare the format of your files for a clean and easy conversion to the required formats for the various sites. Writing and Selling a Children's Picture BookAge(s) 16+This seminar helps the author edit, revise and fine-tune the story line and characters to make the story more enjoyable. It assists the writer in producing a cover letter, an author’s bio and a sample illustrated page, all of which go into a proposal packet. The course also informs the author of how to find an illustrator and what to look for in hiring someone to illustrate their book. This seminar will explain how to work with your illustrator to produce a storyboard and the importance of color throughout your book. It will teach you how to do the final formatting of a manuscript, so that it is ready to submit to a potential publisher. The course also deals with the process of selling your writing skills and/or those of your illustrator for the children’s picture book that you hope to have published. It takes a critical look at what a writer can do to improve their work. Attendees should have completed the text for a children’s book.

SUMMER 2013 FACULTY LIST

Jane Brennan holds a B.A. in Art Education from the University of Dayton and has been teaching youth art classes for decades in a variety of settings and in many art media.

Rebekah Bucnis-Thompson holds a B.F.A. in Photography from the University of Dayton and currently owns two photography businesses in the Dayton area. She has taught photography for years at institutions such as Stivers School for the Arts and Rosewood Arts Centre.

Matthew R. Burgy is a sculptor, painter and printmaker. He holds an M.Ed. in multi-age visual arts and a B.F.A. in printmaking and sculpture from Wright State University. He has exhibited his artwork throughout the region and is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Dayton.

Greg Dearth graduated from Ohio University with a B.F.A. He is a member of the Portrait Society of America and has been a guest lecturer and instructor at the Columbus College of Art and Design and Atlanta’s Portfolio Center. His work has been included in many of the juried Society of Illustrators’ annual shows, Communication Arts, American Illustration and Print magazines.

Andy Dailey currently teaches drawing, painting and 2D design at Miami University at Middletown and works as Youth Art Program Coordinator at the Rosewood Arts Centre. He earned a B.F.A. from Wright State University and an M.F.A. from Miami University.

Sammie Sue Edmondson has studied dance since she was seven years old in both New York City and at Sinclair Community College. She is one of the founders of the dance studio at Rosewood Arts Centre.

Shannon Fent has been directing the Kettering Children’s Theatre program and teaching youth theater at Rosewood Arts Centre for over a decade. She has an Associate’s degree from Sinclair Community College in Theatre Production.

Gary Halsey attended the Art Students League of New York in painting and anatomy, and has an M.F.A. from the University of Cincinnati. He operated his own business as a book cover illustrator and mural painter in New York City for over 20 years.

Kate Isaacs is a graduate of Sinclair Community College where she studied both Fine Art and Creative Writing. She has been featured in various art shows and short story contests around the country. She teaches youth classes at Rosewood Arts Centre and is also a writer for the Dayton City Paper.

J. Austin Jennings has been teaching art in the Dayton area since 1994. Her acrylic paintings and collage pieces are shown and collected across the country and have earned many awards, including a featured spot in The Artist’s Magazine’s “Year’s Best Art” in 2009. She is the recipient of the 2012 Pamela Houk Award for Excellence in Art Education. Jennings is a member of Dayton Visual Arts Center, Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, and Arts & Culture Alliance, Knoxville, Tennessee.

Tom Kinarney is a professional artist and freelance illustrator for numerous companies, locally and throughout the country. He has taught art for over a decade in the Dayton region, including at the former Riverbend Art Center, the Fairborn Art Association and at Rosewood Arts Centre.

H. David Kirchner studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has a degree in art from Cedarville College. He has worked in clay since 1984 and owns and operates the H. David Studio/Gallery in downtown Dayton.

Katherine Lammers graduated from Wright State University where she studied art and teaching. She has been working with youth in the Kettering community with Camp Rosewood for the past two years.

April Lemaster has been studying ceramics for over a decade. She has attended numerous workshops and conferences for ceramic techniques around the country. She has exhibited her ceramic work and received awards in the greater Dayton region.

Tony Lupia is a published author and has been involved with the publishing industry for almost 30 years. His expertise covers a wide range of writing, including creative, business and technical.

Nancy Lynn Boss (Nadeja) has been teaching various dance styles for 40 years and is one of the founders of the dance program at Rosewood Arts Centre. She studied dance with Jorg Fastings from the Columbus Ballet Company and Ballet Arts in New York City.

Victoria Manship has a B.F.A. in painting from Ohio University. She was an officer in the University’s Japanese Culture Club, which focused heavily on animé and manga, and has been involved with several youth programs in the region.

Roland Muncy is a self-employed caricature artist. His work has been seen throughout the Dayton area.

Steven Powers studied fine arts at Sinclair Community College where he received a Certificate in Photographic Technology. He studied in sculpture and ceramics extensively.

Loretta Puncer received her B.F.A. in Commercial Design from the University of Dayton. She has been a practicing artist/painter for over 25 years and is the owner of Gallery 510 in Dayton.

Mike Puckett is a mixed media artist specializing in urban style, collaborative painting, drawing and using alternative materials. He studied Fine Art at Cal State Polytechnic University of Pomona in the Los Angeles area. He has been exhibiting his artwork professionally for over a decade in galleries in Los Angeles, New York and Ohio. He is also the co-owner of Rua Studio/Gallery.

Linda Rice has been an art instructor for over a decade. In addition to teaching in the Philippines, Chicago, Pasadena and Dayton, she studied art education and art therapy.

Marianne Scheibert has been dancing for over a decade with specific training in classical ballet, tap, jazz, character, and modern dance technique. She has studied at the University of Dayton and DeWeese Academy of Dance Arts. She continues to participate in local dance performances and workshops while teaching dance for Rosewood Arts Centre.

Leonard Williams has been working in watercolor for over 20 years. His large-scale public artworks include a mural at the Town and Country Shopping Centre in Kettering. His work has been exhibited at Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, Rosewood Gallery, and numerous other regional galleries.

Sharon Williams has been working with clay since 1992. Her experience includes classes with potters from Yellow Springs and the Greater Cincinnati Area. At Rosewood, Sharon has instructed preschoolers through adults in clay and arts and is an active artist in the tri-state area.

FEESFull payment for classes must be made at the time of registration. Resident fees are for those participants who either live or work within the Kettering city limits. Program fees for non-Kettering residents will be an additional 25 percent or $5, whichever is greater (not to exceed $10). Fees will be refunded if a class is full.

PAYMENT METHODSThe City will accept cash, personal checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) and money orders for the payment of fees. Please note which of these forms of payment is acceptable for the method of registration you choose. The City cannot accept any debit cards for payment. The City will charge a $25 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Checks should be made payable to: City of Kettering.

CONFIRMATIONOnce we have processed your registration, we will mail you a confirmation showing which classes you are enrolled. If we were unable to place you in a class, the fee for that class will be placed in your family’s household account as an account credit, and this, too, will be noted on your confirmation. You may:

LATE REGISTRATION Late registrations will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. After the second class meeting, no registrations will be accepted. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee.

All refunds will be made according to the following guidelines.If you have attended one of our classes or purchased a pass and are dissatisfied, call us. We will offer a prorated refund.If you were unable to attend a set of classes, we will try to transfer you to another section. Your residency classification is based on your status as of your last enrollment or pass registration. To modify your information, please contact the registration staff at the Kettering Recreation Complex (296-2587), Rosewood Arts Centre (296-0294) or Lathrem Senior Center (296-2480).
