warm, positive, and productive Roosevelt Community that we are
all a part of! Every smile, greeting, and even the smallest gesture of
kindness makes a difference to our students, staff, and families! As
this is the season to celebrate the spirit of gratitude it is with deep
appreciation that I say Thank You to all for everything you do to
support our school and each other. You all make a difference!
Last week was Parent/Teacher Conference week. I hope you all
walked away with ideas from your child’s teacher as to how you
can reinforce your child’s enthusiasm for reading, writing, and
counting collections at home!
Exciting News! On Saturday, October 26th, a group of 4th and 5th
grade students attended a math contest through MathLeague.Org
hosted at Vista Verde Elementary School in Irvine. As it turns out,
Roosevelt came in 1st Place for the elementary league competition!
We will be celebrating our students at our next Spirit Assembly on
Wednesday, December 4th.
After all the wonderful events of October, (Movie Night, Pier
Pleasure, Halloween Parade…), we are keeping the momentum
going with our first Parent Education Workshop coming up on
Tuesday, November 19th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Our
Assistant Principal, Debbie Stern, will be presenting important
information about bullying and more. Please read her message on
the following page of this newsletter. This is an adult only event.
Childcare and refreshments will be provided for school age
students. Please click here to reserve your space and sign up for
childcare for this event if needed.
Additionally, you are all invited to attend the Casino Night Social on

I hope that you’ll join me later in the month, on Tuesday,
November 19th, from 5:30pm-7:00pm, for a presentation
and discussion around bullying. I’ll share tips on
supporting your child at home and at school, questions to
ask should your child express any concerns about
bullying, myths and facts, and identifiers – the bully and
the bullied. I’ll include ties to online gaming and the
impact of language on children and young people. I look
forward to seeing you!

Staff Spotlight Interview
Lorie Alexander
Q. What grade do you teach and how
long have you been teaching?
A. I have been teaching 3rd grade for most
of my 22 years at Roosevelt. 14 years teaming with Aki!
Q. What are the advantages of Team Teaching?
What are some challenges?
A. I LOVE Team Teaching! Advantages are numerous!
Students in a team setting benefit from being able to
move from one team teacher to the other as needed.
Team teaching helps students adapt to a changing of
environment and fosters an independence that gives
them the confidence to seamlessly transition to multiple
classes as they progress to upper grades. A challenge is
finding enough space in one room to store the creative
and wonderful work of 50 students.
Q. What inspired you to be a teacher?
A. When I was in 4th grade, I struggled at times and my
teacher was not encouraging. I told myself that one day I
would be a teacher and my students would never feel the
way I did in her room. In high school my English handed
me back an assignment and said, “You can do better.” I
don’t know why it affected me like it did, but I started to
do better to show her she was right. I went on to college
and received my master’s degree in education. I pride
myself in empowering my students to persist despite any
obstacles they may face.
Q. What do you love about Roosevelt?
A. I love that I get to have fun teaching math and get my
students to laugh. I love that I have an amazing team
partner and she still loves and supports me even with my
quirky idiosyncrasies! I love how supportive Roosevelt
families truly are!
Q. Can you tell us two fun facts about yourself?
A. I named my youngest son after my childhood pet dog.
I am an avid motorcyclist.
Q. If you could learn anything, what would it be?
A. If I could learn anything, it would be to successfully
play the guitar. I have tried a gazillion times… and I will
keep trying!
Staff Spotlight Interview
Aki Gooden
Q. What grade and how long have you been teaching?
A. I began teaching at Roosevelt back in 2000.
I first taught 5th grade for a few years, then a
combo 2nd/3rd grade class before focusing on teaching 3rd
grade. I love being a 3rd grade teacher the most!
Q. What are the advantages of Team Teaching?
A. The advantages of Team Teaching are that it really allows
us to specialize in particular subjects. Being part of a big team
also encourages teamwork, sense of responsibility, and
deepens friendships. The challenges can be the time
constraint. We only have a certain amount of time before we
need to switch our students, so we must be diligent with
time management! Nevertheless, I love Team Teaching! It
feels extra special because Ms. Alexander and I really
complement each other. It’s so nice to have a partner to lean
on every day that I respect as a great friend and colleague.
Q. What inspired you to be a teacher?
A. When I thought long and hard about the kind of career I
wanted, I knew that I envisioned my days full of laughter and
curiosity. I wanted a career where every day is different from
the next. Teaching gives me all of this and then some!
Q. What do you love about Roosevelt?
A. Roosevelt is my second home/family, a place I can be my
best self. I love Roosevelt’s diversity, sense of community and
the positive Can Do attitude in and out of the classroom.
Anything feels possible at Roosevelt.
Q. Can you tell us two fun facts about yourself?
A. I was really into sports when I was younger. My final event
in swimming was a gold medal at the Junior Olympics. My
highlights as a tennis player were being ranked #1 in the US
for the 12, 14 &under age groups, #1 in Southern California
for 8, 10, 12, 14, 18 & under age groups, turning pro, having
the opportunity to play in tournaments around the world.
Another fact is if I were not a teacher, I would love to have a
job where I can travel around the world and eat all day long.
Q. If you could learn anything what would it be?
A. This is a tough question because I want to learn SO many
things! The first things off the top of my head is surfing,
skateboarding, how to change my own tires, and becoming
fluent in as many languages as I can!
