Straightening of the Rhein 1817 - 1876
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans Reiner Böhm
I N FRA STRU K TU R & U M W ELTProf essor Böhm und Part ner
Improvement of flood protection and reclamation of areas for
agriculture and settlements by
drainage of the swamps and
cut of the meanders
Straightening of the Rhein - impacts
Results
the Straightening has
shortened River Rhein between Basel and Bingen by 81 km
Improved flood protection partly,
shifted the problem to the Lower and Middle Rhein
effected a serious interventions in nature
To avoid severe floods River Rhein needs more room again
and by this a partial restoration of the natural landscape

expectated losses: > one billion € (IKSR 1998).
Efficient utilization of the financial means:
In case of reduction of the damage potential by some
percent
