AIRSTRACT TERMINALS

Passivent Airstract is a range of roof-mounted natural ventilation terminalswhich combine low airflow resistance withhigh airflow capacity and excellentweatherability.

Airstract terminals can be used as part of asustainable, low-energy, natural ventilationstrategy to provide an exhaust outlet for usedair. No power is consumed as natural forcesmove the air.

Airstract applicationsUsed for passive stack ventilation (PSV)applications in conjunction with Aircool®

façade ventilators, they can ventilate deepplan spaces and provide night cooling. They can also be used for multiple extractapplications and mechanical extract outlets.

Other optionsAluminium Airstract terminals, available in a larger range of sizes.

Airstract terminals with energy efficientmechanical assistance.

AIRSCOOP TERMINALS

Passivent Airscoop is a range of roof-mounted natural ventilation terminalswhich provide top-down or displacementventilation using wind power alone.

Each unit is divided into four separate ductsinternally so that wind from any direction ischannelled down through the windwardchamber(s).

This cooler, denser air flows down into thebuilding, whilst warmer (and thereforelighter) air from inside is displaced upwardsand out via the leeward chambers.

Airscoop applicationsParticularly designed for large or deep-plancommercial buildings of up to two storeys, where direct perimeter ventilation is limitedor undesirable.

HYBRID PLUS AIRSTRACT TERMINALS

Passivent Hybrid Plus Airstract is a range of roof-mounted terminals which provide arange of additional options to the standardAirstract with an innovative air temperingand mixing unit utilising a single energy-efficient, low-power sweep fan (whenrequired).

As well as in mixing mode, in unusualbuilding occupancy events such as thegeneration of excessive CO2 levels orexcessive heat gains such as occasional highdensity occupation, the fan can also beactivated to purge the space more rapidlythan a passive ventilation system will allow.Alternatively it can still operate in passivestack mode still providing low-levelresistance to airflow.

Hybrid Plus Airstract applicationsUsed for a range of ventilation applicationsparticularly on upper floors of buildingswhere direct perimeter ventilation is limitedor undesirable. Also suitable for large openbuildings such as sports halls andauditoriums and can also be used for secureand weatherproof night cooling.

Passivent Airstract and Airscoop terminalsare available in a variety of shapes, finishes, colours and lid options. Our in-housemanufacturing capability allows the designerflexibility to integrate terminals within aproject or to emphasise the sustainabledesign of the building.

Modern (square and rectangular)Modern terminals combine functionality andclean lines in a simple contemporary look.Alternatively they can be contrasted with arange of top designs to create a traditional orbespoke appearance. Suitable for all rooftypes from flat to 45° pitch.

Traditional (square)Traditional terminals feature a decorative topmaking them suitable for long establishedbuildings. Suitable for all roofs from flat to45° pitch.

BespokeBespoke designs are available to complementthe roof finish and accentuate the roofdesign without affecting the performance orweatherability of the terminals.

CircularCircular terminals offer a dramatic designalternative, suitable for all roofs from flat to30° roof pitch. They use standard squarebase units for ease of flashing and to ensureweather integrity.

Circular terminals feature integral winddeflection posts to maximise theiraerodynamic performance and ventilationeffectiveness.

Wind can pass around smooth cylindricalshapes relatively uninterrupted, leading to alow ventilation effectiveness. Passiventterminals have vertical airflow deflectorposts which project slightly from the louvresso as to disrupt the airflow around theterminal and cause early flow separation. This helps to increase the negative pressureon the leeward side, drawing more airthrough the louvres and thus improving theoverall ventilation performance of theterminal.

DescriptionDuring peak summer temperatures, theminimal temperature difference betweenindoors and outside can result in low flowrates for passive stack ventilation, especiallyon still windless days.

During these periods or at other times ofunusual events, such as high occupancy orunusual heat gain, the building will sufferfrom raised temperatures or higher thannormal CO2 levels leading to reduced airquality and lethargy for the room occupants.

These changes in internal conditions can beidentified by the Passivent IntelligentControl System which activates the lowenergy fan. The fan generates a change ininternal pressure which maintains theventilation system performance until eitherthe temperature or CO2 levels have achieved the targeted set point.

PerformanceMaximum flow rate when inlet and outletresistances are equal and fan is in operation: 580 l/s.

BENEFITS

● A number of different modes can beprogrammed to allow the mostenergy efficient option to be used asand when required.

● In low winter temperatures to avoiddraughts, recirculation mode mixesincoming fresh air with interiorwarm air to provide tempered freshair to the space.

● In peak summer temperatures toavoid overheating, enhanced modeallows for high levels of air movement.

● Single low-power fan uses minimalenergy only when required duringpeak summer and low wintertemperatures.

● High-level inlets in summer allowthe system to operate a night-coolingstrategy, using cooler night time airto reduce the temperature of thebuilding’s thermal mass.

● The unique terminal design does notrequire a vertical internal divider, and therefore the flow performanceis independent of wind direction. This ensures the system flowperformance does not stall withchanging wind directions.

● Controlled through an intelligentPassivent iC8000 Control System.iC8000 ensures the system operatesin the correct mode according tofactors such as CO2 concentrations, internal and external temperatures.

● Based primarily on natural ventilationstrategy so does not require largeand costly mechanical plant.

Mode 1 NaturalMost of the year

In natural mode the Hybrid PlusAirstract Roof Terminal acts as a passivestack. Fresh air enters the space via lowlevel air inlets, for example PassiventAircool ventilators, or opening windows.Warm air rises and is exhausted at highlevel through the Hybrid Plus AirstractRoof Terminal. This is a purely passive mode and the fan does not operate. This mode enablescontrol over indoor air quality andtemperatures.

Single-space system, 3 operating modesThe system uses one of three operating modes depending on the needs of the building and outside temperatures.

Duct actuator fully open.Air path to terminal outside ofthe duct but no mixingavailable.

Fan direction: Stopped

Sub-base damper modulating

This strategy requires a low-level inlet such as an Aircoolunit

Enhanced (air extracts)

Duct actuator fully closed.Air path to terminal outside ofthe duct fully closed.

Fan direction: Reverse

Sub-base damper open

This strategy requires a low-level inlet such as an Aircoolunit

Recirculation and enhanced(air in and air extract)

Duct actuator fully open.Air path to terminal outside ofthe duct open but no mixingavailable.

Mode 3 RecirculationLow winter temperatures; summer night cooling

Low-level air inlets are closed, preventingcold draughts. Fresh air is brought in athigh level through the Hybrid PlusAirstract terminal. With the fan running, the incoming fresh air mixes withinterior warm air in the Hybrid PlusAirstract mixing chamber, providingtempered fresh air to the room. During unoccupied periods when the air inlets are closed and the temperaturerises, the Hybrid Plus Airstract terminal both supplies and exhausts air. This ensures a fresh environment whenthe room is occupied again.

The same strategy can be used for securenight cooling in summer especially ifthere are no low-level inlets or to openthem would present a security risk.

Mode 2 EnhancedPeak summer temperatures

To avoid overheating within the room, the single low power fan in the HybridPlus Airstract terminal extracts highvolumes of air from the space andexhausts it to the outside. Fresh air isbrought in through low-level air inlets. This mode allows the ventilation rateto be increased to control peaksummer temperatures.

Enhanced Airscoop systems

Direct Air Dispersal system (DAD)Suitable for buildings with large open voidswhere there is no intermediate ceiling, suchas sports, concert and meeting halls, factoryspaces, warehouses etc. The four separate airinlets/outlets on the Enhanced Airscoopensure that the airflow is always separatedregardless of wind direction. This alsoprovides much improved distribution andmixing of air preventing 'short-circuiting' atthe unit. The patented system has beendesigned to optimise the flow characteristicswithin the Airscoop, keeping pressure lossesto a minimum.

Remote Air Dispersal (ducted) system (RAD)Suitable for all building types withintermediate ceilings such as offices andclassrooms. The system utilises the sameAirscoop design as above but theinlets/outlets are connected via flexibleductwork to four diffusers in the ceiling ofthe ventilated space. This ensures effectiveair distribution within the space and enablesthe ceiling diffusers to be sited for maximumbenefit in relation to space utilisation. Theductwork losses have been minimised, allowing runs up to 10m to be used. Sinceairflow is controlled within the Airscoop, ductwork only needs to be insulated whenrunning through cold voids.

Basic Airscoop systemsThe Basic system is suitable for use inbuildings with and without intermediateceilings. The air is ducted down from theAirscoop to controllable double skinaluminium louvres with ABS thermal breakthrough a diffuser grille mounted within theceiling or base unit for controlling airflowdirectly into the occupied space. Thedampers ensure that draughts under theoutlets are minimised, especially importantin spaces occupied during the day. The angleof the louvres also assists in spreading theairflow within the ventilated space.

Silsoe Research Instituteflow test laboratorymeasuring airflowperformance of Airscoops

Passivent has been a major partner in the BSRIA-chaired PiI researchproject ‘Wind Driven NaturalVentilation Systems’. The BSRIA guideBG2/2005, which is the major output of the project, confirms the principlesby which Airscoop type systems workand provides guidance on their use. It highlights the importance of keydesign parameters such as driving rain resistance and optimised flowcharacteristics following extensivewind tunnel testing and analysis ofinstalled systems in the field.

Passivent has also invested heavily in further applied research at SilsoeResearch Institute over a period ofthree years. Airscoop systems havebeen monitored both in the field and in the unique flow test laboratory. The research has also focused on theperformance of the ventilation deliveryand the distribution and mixing ofairflows. This has been linked back toCFD modelling of the flowcharacteristics both in building spacesand within the Airscoop unit itself. This has led to the development of thepatented Enhanced Airscoop systemsincorporating the unique four-waydamper device and triangular-to-roundinlets/outlets.

TAS Airscoop Builder is a new utilityfor modelling Airscoop roof-mountedventilation terminals and their benefitsto building performance. TAS is abuilding thermal analysis toolcommonly used for calculating energyconsumption and assessing peaksummer temperatures. For more information visitwww.edsl.net
