The Danube Delta

The maze of canalsbordered by reed,willowsand oaksentangled in lianas,offers the perfect breeding ground forcountless species of birds, some ofthem from as far away as China andAfrica. Millions of Egyptianwhitepelicansarrive here every spring toraise their young, while equalnumbers ofArctic geesecome here toescape the harsh winters of NorthernEurope.

Some 300 species of birds makeDanubes Delta their homein summer. Birds are not the onlyinhabitants of the Delta. There is alsoa rich community of fish andmammals; fromwildcats, foxesandwolves, to even an occasional boarordeer. Altogether, more than 3,000animal species can be seen here, aswell as 1,700 plant species.

The county of Tulcea is well knownfor its natural beauties: the DanubeDeltathe youngest land in thecountry, Macin Mountainstheoldest in Romania and in Europe, theBlack Seashore.

But it is also known for its numerousethnic communities which live intolerance and understanding on thisland. Romanians, Russians,Lipovanski, Ukrainians, Bulgarians,

Turkish, Greeks, Aromanians,Italians, Germans, Armenians,Hungarians, Rroma people and Jewslive and work here, speak their ownlanguages, keep their century-oldtraditions and pray in their ownchurches/temples/mosques.

Tulcea is the capital of the county with thesame name.

The city lies on seven hills, just like Rome,

and has a population of about 100,000inhabitans.

It was founded by the Greeks in the 4thcentury B.C. under the name of Aegyssus.

Tulcea is considered to be the gate to the

Danube Delta as this is the starting pointfor the tours into the magnificent world ofthe Delta.

Some students from Pedagogic Highschool

are involved in astronomy activities at The Children

Palace, Delta Orion Astroclub.

There, they are watching movies with astronomic and

phisycs themes , are observing the nightsky with

telescopes and with the open eye, but also they areobserving the sun through the telescope.

Also, they had been involved in the national and

international astronomical programmes such as

Earth Hour , 100 Hours of Astronomy ,

Galilean Nights.

One of our student managed to get to the National

Olympiad of Astronomy and placed the 6that the junior

category.

Also she participated at the selection of the group

that represented Romania at the International Olympiad of

Astronomy. Romania always won the bronze , silver and goldmedals at this Olympiad.

So, we encourage the young students to participate

at these kind of activities and contests.
