experienced significant rainfall, so we had a lot of time to ponder the upcoming season under the rain tents! Not a very profitable Friday, but spirits were high and beverages were flowing on Saturday and Sunday. Thanks to those volunteers that helped us host this event. Every new fundraiser has a learning curve. See you next weekend for Art on the Green the first weekend of August…without the rain!

The North Idaho College Booster Club is a nonprofit organization, committed to providing financial support to all recognized intercol-legiate athletic programs at NIC through various fund-raising and en-dowment activities for student ath-lete grant-in-aid and team benefits. Organized in the 1960s, the Booster

Club supports all NIC recognized in-tercollegiate athletics as a lifelong learning experience that will enhance the value of sportsmanship and pro-vide a positive experience for stu-dent athletes, students, and fans. The club also recognizes the commit-ment our athletes make to the young people of our community through our

athletic Cardinal Kids outreach pro-grams. The Booster Club holds vari-ous fund-raising events throughout the year including an annual auction, awards banquet, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, and golf tournament. It also sponsors a booth each year at the North Idaho Fair and operates a con-cession stand at all home events.

A word from the Athletic Director

AL WILLIAMS

The summer is over! School is back in session! Soccer and Volleyballs have been bouncing at prac-tice for almost a month! The U-Haul vans are visible on campus! Parking spaces are slowly filling up! Lost students dot the hallways looking for class-room. And your Cardinals are in pursuit of another NATIONAL championship! I’m not sure which sport…too soon to tell!

This newsletter features our 2013 Fall sports of Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer and Volleyball. New Volleyball Head Coach Miles Kydd has his team seeking NIC’s record 4th straight NJCAA tourna-ment appearance. This year’s national volleyball tournament will be in “nearby” Casper, Wyoming. Men’s soccer is seeking that elusive first NJCAA national tournament appearance, and this year the road becomes a little tougher as we have to com-pete in the Region 9 tournament in Colorado to earn a spot in the District playoffs. With a talented group of newcomers Coach Ken Thompson’s team is looking forward to the challenge. Women’s soc-cer is coming off of another impressive season, and they appear more determined than ever to reach the NJCAA national tournament for a second time this season. Check out the website for the upcom-ing home matches and in nearby Liberty Lake at the HUB Sports Complex for volleyball and wrestling.

COACHES MEDIA DAY SHOWCASEJoin us on September 24 for the annual Coaches

Showcase at the CDA Resort Shore Lounge. The special media day event features season outlooks and national predictions from all of the NIC coach-es. There will also be raffles, give-aways and a sea-son highlight video. The lunch begins at 11:30am and is open to the public.

N I C C A R D I N A L S H O M E E V E N T S C H E D U L E

We welcome back our stu-dent-athletes after an exciting summer!

NIC hosted many camps for youth groups in wrestling, basketball, softball, volleyball and soccer in addition to our many fundraisers.

However, we spent quite a bit of time looking long term, with the proposed con-struction of a Sports Com-plex in Coeur d’Alene. Spe-cial thanks to John Stone of

Riverstone Development, Doug Parker of Parker Toy-ota, and the many members of the ad hoc committee that served endless hours to bring a recommendation to the NIC Board of Trustees to pursue this worthwhile venture.

With the assistance of the Lake City Development Cor-poration, an urban renewal development agency serving CDA, the college has a tre-mendous opportunity to pro-

vide a much needed upgrade to the NIC athletic facilities.

The potential 5,000 seat in-door facility would fill a much needed void in Coeur d’Alene and northern Idaho, as well.

We anxiously await the outcome of the NIC Board’s decision, but in the meantime come support your Cardinals in pursuit of another National Championship!

Go Cardinals!

The NIC athletics department sponsors several community service events through-out the year. The Shirley Parker Reading Program, created by the National Cham-pion NIC Wrestling team, will issue its 11,000th book to local first graders this year. Other volunteer programs include the Cardinal Canine Club, the WE Care Program (raising funds through t-shirt sales), School Supplies for Tots, Think Pink- Breast Cancer Awareness games, the Special Needs Basketball Games, and the Cardinal Food Drive, amongst others.

The NIC Athletics Department takes pride in its role as a community service leader…for many more years to come! Thanks for your support!

WOMEN’S SOCCERThe 2013 season has already started and

it will be exciting to see what our team can accomplish.

There are 6 starters returning from last season’s squad including leading scorer, Ellie Engel. Midfield playmaker Kellsi Parson and goalkeepers Whittni Mundel and Alex Rodriquez are also returning as well as 3 others from last year’s 9-4-2 team. Tiffany Draper, a “red-shirt” last year, and Alyssa Allen will compete for spots along the for-ward line. Morgan Kuehl will move from the front line to midfield this year joining return-ing midfielder from C o e u r d ’ A l e n e , Emilee Cordon.

Newcomers Kei-lin Farrand, a midfielder from Ellensburg, Washington and Meghan Pagano, Sand-point High School’s best forward are ex-pected to provide an extra punch to the Cardinals’ attack this and hopefully provide enough impact to propel NIC to the nation-al tournament.

The defensive line is there area of most doubt when it comes to who will be playing which position. Audrianna Woods will re-turn at center back and Kacy Johnson will likely move the other center position from her left back spot from the year before. Jamie Gates, coming off of a “red-shirt” season, is the frontrunner for one outside back and several newcomers will compete for the other starting positions.

The schedule for this year is the tough-est in several years with games against 4, 4-year school’s varsity teams. The first of these is a scrimmage against Central Wash-ington University on August 19th. This year’s Cardinal Classic features the second match against a 4-year school as North-west Nazarene University travels to Coeur d’Alene to play against the hometown Car-dinals and the second school, Northwest College of Powell, Wyo.

NIC will have to return to Cheyenne,

Wyo. for the NJCAA District C Tournament again this year and that means figuring out how to beat Laramie County on the home field. Lucky for the Cardinals, they’ll be playing the Eagles in a regular season game Sept. 8th which should give the players an idea how it feels to play at 6,500 feet eleva-tion.

Check out the rest of the NIC schedule on the website and come watch the Cardi-nals!

MEN’S SOCCERMen’s Soccer started practice on Au-

gust 5th with nine returners and thirteen new players. John Ray returned fitter and more dangerous in front of the goal than ever, and Christian Botuli will continue to be an impact player in central midfield. Among the new players, Shane Stanley (Sandpoint) and Rodger Bucknor (Jamai-ca) add two impact players in the midfield with high soccer IQs and exceptional ability to distribute. Jesse Bostrom (Helena) will give the Cardi-nals a big target with a soft touch up front, and Adam Tal -ley (Newman Lake) adds an explosive goalscorer to the mix.

In the back, the Cardinals have a lot of new local faces. TJ Merwin, Jake Kraut, and Alec Johnson are all from Kootenai County. Kurtis Kanenwischer is from Spokane Valley, and all four add qual-ity and depth to the back line. Robert Wil-son, of Boise, is the lone returning defend-er, but Will Mecier a transfer (Yavapai) from Boise brings experience to that part of the field.

The Cardinals got a taste of college competition in an exhibition match on Au-gust 17th in Kirkland, Washington again Northwest University. We opened the sea-son with wins in Powell, Wyo., defeating Dodge City Community College on Aug. 24, 3-1, and No. 20 Northwest College on Aug 25th, 3-2.

SOFTBALLFall ball is just around the corner, and

we will start official practice on September 3rd. We have 18 newcomers to the 2014 roster and three re-turners with Kylene Hatton , Hunter Allen and Laura Potts. We are excit-ed to get them out on the field and see what they look like together.

We will be hav-ing our annual team retreat the weekend of September 7th, and then mark your calendars for our alumni game on Septem-ber 14th at 1:00pm.

We should have a great group of alumni returning for the weekend. Looking forward to seeing everyone out at Memorial Field this fall.

GOLFThe women’s golf team finished the

season on the course with the highest fin-ish in school history, 9th in the nation. At the conclusion of the season the team also earned NJCAA Academic All-American status with a team GPA of 3.26. Sophomore Arlee Coleman will be continuing her golf career at Northern Colorado Universi-ty in Greeley, CO, but sophomores Jennie Williams and Madi Hauck return to bolster the Cardinals chances for a return to the national tourna-ment . Incoming freshmen include in-state recruits E l s a G o o d s e n from Coeur d’Alene and Brittany Born from Donnelly. Jenna Kaik from Freeland, WA rounds out the incoming class.

On the men’s side, sophomore Aus-tin Westphal became the 2nd player in NIC history to be named NJCAA Ping All-

American. Austin was named All-American based on his steady play throughout the year. Westphal had 1 win, 3 top 5 and 3 top 10 finishes this season. “I am so happy for Austin. He is very deserving of this award, his play was very consistent this year. It seemed like every time we played you would see his name in the top 10,” said Head Coach Derrick Thompson. Austin will continue his education and golf career at Montana State University – Billings next season.

Westphal and fellow sophomore Spen-cer Skipper were named to the NJCAA All District 1 Team, which honors the top ten players in District 1. District 1 is comprised of teams in Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Ne-braska and Arizona. Six Cardinals in total have been named to the All District team dating back to 2010. We had a great turnout at the Scott Wemple Memorial tournament, named after the father of former NIC golfer Amanda Wemple. The Rolly Williams Car-dinal Classic on September 20 is also at Avondale, and both tournaments will ben-efit the NIC golf programs.

Thanks for your support!

MEN’S BASKETBALLThe Men’s Basketball team had a very

busy summer with the addition of 13 new team members. The Cardinals didn’t look too far in signing five from the same high school.

They added Will Dorsey (5’9), Mar-quis Davis (5’10), Wilfred Middle-b ro o k s ( 6 ’ 1 0 ) , F u q u a n N i l e s (6’10) and Jor-dan King (6’3), all from Seattle’s Rainier Beach High School. All five are proven winners, as Rainier Beach is the two-time defending State 3A Champion.

The Cardinals also added two transfers. Washington State transfer Bryce Leavitt played in 20 games for the Cougs last season and is a Kennewick, Washington native.

Devin Loy, a Couer d’ Alene High grad, is transferring in from Green River Community

College. Aside from Leavitt, Loy and return-ers Nathan Rathbun, Jason Wheelock and Tyler Higbie, the rest of the Cardinals will be freshmen. Braxton Tucker (6’6) from Ta-coma, WA, Shikei Blake (6’6) Wilimington, Delaware, Cole Kesler (6’3) Laguna Beach, CA, Brad Wallace (6’0) Olympia, WA, and two Australians in Tatafu Nuku (6’7) and Jamaal Robateau (6’3) wind up the Cardi-nals’ recruiting class.

We have some great non-conference tour-naments with Arizona Western and Central Wyoming coming to town November 15th and 16th, and a Thanksgiving tournament featuring Williston State and Blue Mountain Community College.

We are excited to mold this group togeth-er and we look forward to another successful season! As always, we appreciate all your support. We could not do this without you!

VOLLEYBALLCardinal Volleyball had a new feel as the

incoming Head Coach in the spring. Joined by 2nd year assistant Kelsey Stanley, we were able to evaluate the returners after two

spring tournaments (Gonzaga and Spokane Falls CC), where the team had a great deal of success with only a handful of sets lost in 8 matches.

As can be expected, the tournaments and subsequent training sessions provided the athletes and coaching staff the opportunity to learn a little more about each other and made the transition into pre-season training in August much smoother.

With 7 returners from last season’s 8th place NJCAA national finish, the Cardinals were looking to fill several holes in the line-up this summer and signed two outstand-ing players to Letters of Intent. Madalyn (Maddi) Seidl, a 5’9” setter and class vale-dictorian from Castle Rock, WA, will join Allison Meehan as the team’s setters in 2013. Maddi, was a 4-year starting setter and led her team to top 4 finishes at State each year, while capturing the State Volley-ball Championship as a senior. Maddi was All-State as a junior and senior in volleyball and league MVP. She was also 1st Team All-State in basketball, averaging 18 rebounds

The Cardinals seek to return to the NJCAA national tournament for the 4th consecutive season with a balance of youth and experience. The team faced tough com-petition against 4 year schools at the Red Lion Invitational (August 23-24) in Liberty Lake at the HUB, winning 3 of the 5 scrim-mages. The Cardinals will also face a tough preseason with tournaments at Salt Lake CC, Northeastern College in Sterling, CO, and at CSI. Our first home contest will be a SWAC match up against Snow College on October 3rd. Check out the website for game times and dates. Go Cards!
