Introduction To The Machine The Rollicut Rotary mower is a very robust high capacity roller mower that is easy to operate and maintain. The machine consists of three individual roller mower bodies mounted to a chassis and towed by a tractor. This results in a machine that can mow a wide area quickly and efficiently but also able to fold up to a compact size to travel on the road. The three bodies are free to float up and down independently, they are also able to pivot to follow the ground contours. The three bodies are raised into transport position by independent hydraulic rams either controlled from the tractors spools of by the optional control box. When raised into transport position the bodies are automatically locked prevent them lowering Each mowing deck is fitted with either 3 or 4 rotors with full width rollers front and back. These rollers help the machine contour across the ground. The Rollicut can mow at high ground speeds and produce a finish that is equal to a set of cylinder mowers and with reduced running costs.

Setting Up Your Machine

Attaching to the Tractor It is advisable to remove the tractor rear link arms. However, if this is not convenient, lift the link arms to their highest position or lower them to their lowest position so they do not contact the PTO shaft or drawbar when turning. Before coupling to the tractor, it is important to check that the tractor draw bar is out at its longest setting, which will give the tightest turning circle without risk of bottoming out the PTO shaft.

When fitting the pin through the drawbar clevis, insert the plastic washer between the tractor and machine drawbar as shown. This washer is a replaceable wearing part (Part No. 4600139).

Page 16: ROLLICUT 500/600 - Spearhead Machinery

ROLLICUT 500 & 600

16

Drawbar Length

The drawbar is adjustable to set both the height and length of the hitch. The drawbar length may need to be lengthened if wide turf tyres are fitted to the tractor.

To adjust the drawbar remove the two bolts and adjust as required. Set the drawbar as short as possible.

Page 17: ROLLICUT 500/600 - Spearhead Machinery

ROLLICUT 500 & 600

17

Shortening The Input PTO Shaft

Before fitting the PTO for the first time, it may be necessary to adjust the length. There should be maximum engagement of the sliding tubes without bottoming at the shortest operation position. To check, first connect the mower to the tractor. Pull the PTO shafts next to each other in the shortest working position. If necessary, shorten the inner and outer guard tubes equally (Fig 1). Shorten the inner and outer sliding profiles by the same length as the guard tubes. File all sharp edges and remove burrs and Grease sliding profiles.

Page 18: ROLLICUT 500/600 - Spearhead Machinery

ROLLICUT 500 & 600

18

Connecting Input PTO Shaft

To fit the PTO, first clean and grease. Press pins on the yoke and simultaneously push the PTO drive shaft onto the PTO shaft of the tractor until the pins engage. Pull back on the shaft to check the shaft is securely attached The PTO shaft is fitted with a non-rotating safety guard. It should be secured to the machine and tractor with the two retaining chains provided.

Connecting Hydraulic Supply Connect the two hydraulic pipes to the tractor’s hydraulics. Blue Dust Cap Hose – Pressure to single acting wing lift ram Red Dust Cap Hose – Pressure to single acting rear body lift ram

Before Operating Machine Daily Checks

Daily checks must be carried out before starting work.

• Check all nuts and bolts are tight

• Check tyres for any damage

• Check blades are not broken or bent

• Ensure all drive shafts are greased.

• Check that all guards and PTO guards are intact

• Ensure spindles and roller bearings are greased.

Lifting And Lowering Machine The raising and lowering of the wings and rear body are controlled by separate hydraulic services. To lower either the wings or the rear body first pressurise the hydraulic spool to raise the body slightly, then pull the transport release catch rope. When holding the rope tight move the hydraulic leaver to lower the body. Make sure there is enough space to lower the wings with no obstructions or persons around. (See Transport Release Rope Section).

Starting Machine For First Time Before you start the machine for the first time check that all the spindles move freely this can be done with the machine in transport position. To start the machine for the first time choose a space with little grass, then start the PTO at idle, the tractor may stall if using a small tractor, if this happens the revs may need to be slightly increased to start the mower.

Page 28: ROLLICUT 500/600 - Spearhead Machinery

ROLLICUT 500 & 600

28

Cutting Height The Rollicut roller mower is fitted with rollers front and rear of the mowing body. The height off these rollers are used to adjust the cut height of the machine. The rollers and skid combination makes the cutting operation very safe as the blades are all enclosed. To adjust the cutting height of the machine, first the locking nut (A) must be loosened, there are 4 of the locking bolts, one on each corner. To then adjust the height the adjuster bolt (B) must be turned clockwise to raise the height of cut. Every complete turn will raise the cut height by 5mm. The cut height of the body can be varied from 10mm to 120mm. when the selected cut height is reached the locking bolts (A) should be retightened.

Traveling Between Jobs

1. Disengage PTO drive. 2. Raise mowing body’s insuring transport locks engage 3. Turn on headlights and warning lights.

Starting Mowing Job Engage the PTO only when the tractor engine is at low revs to prevent shock load damage to machine. Slowly increase the engine revs to achieve the standard 540 RPM PTO speed. If at any time serious vibration occurs, stop the engine immediately and check that no blades are missing, (following all safety precautions). The cause must be found and rectified immediately or other components may be affected. When in work, lower the machine to the ground carrying all its weight on the rollers, allowing the machine to follow the contours of the ground. Select a sensible forward speed bearing-in-mind the density of growth, the terrain and the available horsepower, taking extra care when turning, particularly on slopes. Quality of finish is determined by the forward speed i.e. a slow speed will produce a high quality of cut, whereas faster forward speeds are used when high output is first priority. When in work, always ensure the hydraulic spool valve that operates the mowing decks is in float position to enable the decks to freely follow all contours of the ground. The constant velocity joint on the input PTO shaft can allow large joint angles up-to 80 degrees, this should only be allowed for a brief period, for example when turning on headlands out of work. To extend the maximum working life of the PTO ensure the joint angle is no more than 16 degrees @ 540 rpm under load. Take care when turning not to run the tractor wheel against the mower drawbar or the tractor lower links fouling the PTO, as this will result in serious damage.

Finishing Mowing Job

• Stop tractor in level clear space and apply hand brake

• Decrease engine revs to idle.

• Disengage PTO drive

• Raise decks to transport position.

• If ‘roading’ machine to new mowing job follow road transport instructions

• If parking the mower and tractor apply handbrake, stop engine and remove key.

30

General Operating Tips

• Running PTO at speeds over 540rpm the blades over speed causing undue stress, this can result in blades breaking and coming off causing risk of injury or death.

• For best mowing results mow in dry conditions, the finish achieved will vary with several factors: grass length, terrain, moisture.

• Depending on conditions ground speed can vary from very slow to 20Kph depending on ground conditions and terrain.

• Always slow down when mowing over rough ground and close to obstacles.

• Always inspect area to be cut for obstacles before mowing, if an obstacle is hit stop machine and check for damage.

• Blades may need to be replaced or sharpened if you see that the blade has not cut cleanly.

• If people approach the work area stop the machine immediately, do not restart until the work area is clear.

WARNING

On delivery of your machine, check that the Dealer has completes the PDI Form and ensure the Warranty Registration Form has been

completed and returned.

Transmission Covers On the top of each of the mowing bodies there are two covers, these are to guard the operator from the moving parts inside and also to keep grass and debris away from the transmission. These covers will need to be removed to check belt tension or to replace a belt.

.

COVERS COVERS

Page 33: ROLLICUT 500/600 - Spearhead Machinery

ROLLICUT 500 & 600

33

Belt Tensioners Once set from the factory they should not need to be re-tensioned, but if it does the following procedure should be followed: Undo the two bolts holding the retaining plate that’s surrounds the tensioner. Place spanner on square of tensioner to hold tension. Undo the socket cap bolt that holds the tensioner in position. Tensioning force of the SE-F using the ‘NORMAL’ mounting hole are: Up to 10deg = 75N Up to 20deg = 185N Up to 30deg = 350N The highlighted figure below is the setting we would use for this tensioner. Once the correct degree of tensioning is achieved, tighten the centre socket cap bolt to 41 Nm. Then tighten the outer two bolts that hold the retaining plate. This is now set ok.

Replacing a Belt To replace the belts follow the tensioning procedure above, but remove the belt that needs replacing and fit the new type before following the re-tensioning procedure for the belt.

Page 34: ROLLICUT 500/600 - Spearhead Machinery

ROLLICUT 500 & 600

34

Blades The blades are mounted onto a blade carrier which is then mounted onto the underside of the rotor spindle. The blades can be removed with only one spanner/tool due to the bolt being located into the blade carrier by a square location shoulder.

WARNING

Genuine Spearhead Blades must be used due to Safety reasons or otherwise Warranty will also be void

Transporting Mower First disengage the PTO drive and fully raise the machine. Fold the wings to fully upright and ensure the locking hooks engage. Lift rear mower to maximum and ensure the locking hooks engage fully.

Never transport along public highways with the wings only supported by the hydraulics. Always ensure that the locking hooks are fully engaged.

Please observe Public Highway Regulations concerning the towing of implements and ensure all rear lights are working.

The maximum recommended speed is 20MPH (30K).

Storage of Mower

At the end of the season before storing, thoroughly wash the machine off, removing all traces of grass and dirt. Great care must be taken when washing with high-pressure hoses, do not hold the water jet close to the paintwork. Use steam cleaners with caution and be sure to remove all detergents to avoid any discoloring or damage to paint. Grease all grease points until fresh grease shows. Store PTO shaft and drive belts in a dry place. Control levers must be kept dry. Smear grease on all areas vulnerable to corrosion, in particular the chrome ram rods. Remember regular maintenance will greatly increase the life of the machine.
