With Sadness and Gratitude The AFV Board of Directors Announces The Departure Of Executive Director Neil Trent

On behalf of Animal Friends of the Valleys and the AFV Board of Directors, we extend a heartfelt thank you to Neil Trent. Neil served as AFV’s Executive Director for the past two years. During this time, Neil’s accomplishments helped to pilot AFV to our next level of success while carrying out AFV’s Mission and Vision. He also helped to execute AFV’s Strategic Plan that was created by the board of directors and AFV employees. We were very fortunate to have Neil as AFV’s Executive Director during his two-year tenure. Neil’s leadership was outstanding during the fires that took place in our communities. AFV took in 171 animals from fire victims who evacuated their homes and needed a safe place for their animals. AFV opened its doors 24/7, to accommodate and care for all 171 animals; the animals were successfully reunited with their families once the families were allowed to return home. As a result of the dedicated work by AFV employees and especially Animal Control, under the leadership of Chief Middleton, AFV was recognized for excelling in helping our communities during this dangerous and uncertain time. AFV was given city awards and recognition for outstanding assistance during the fires. Neil worked with Humane Society International to establish an international veterinarian internship program. AFV’s first two veterinarian interns came to us from Egypt and Turkey. They worked alongside AFV’s veterinarians at our low cost clinic and exchanged medical knowledge and procedures. At the end of their internship, our international veterinarians delivered an excellent presentation of their experience and learning opportunities. They were very grateful for the chance to work with AFV and our veterinarians. AFV plans to continue this international outreach enrichment program. Other business partnerships were also developed with Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Tag Machine Corp., and Wallace Research Foundation, among others. Neil oversaw AFV’s low cost spay/neuter clinic. Dr. Laura Paris, clinic director, executed an initiative in our strategic plan by opening our clinic seven days a week; she also added an additional veterinarian, Dr. Margo Kasting, to meet the needs of our growing and prosperous clinic. The new clinic hours have significantly increased the clinic ’s business while supporting the needs voiced by the communities we serve. Another strategic initiative, orchestrated by Neil and Chief Middleton, highlights crucial spay/neuter and microchipping concerns that impact our animals and cities. These concerns were addressed in a presentation given to our cities.

Resolution of these concerns is an important animal welfare initiative. AFV will continue to work with our cities on this initiative. As a result of Neil’s leadership and direct result of the excellent work by Beth Soltysiak, AFV’s director of donor development, the following recognitions were received:

The prestigious 2018 award for Non-profit of the Year in Lake Elsinore

The prestigious 2018 award for Non-profit of the Year in Temecula

AFV was nominated for the 2018 award for Non-profit of the Year in Menifee. (The Wildomar and Murrieta Non-profit of the Year awards will be announced this summer.)

From Animal Control

The AFV Board of Directors thank our employees for their dedication. We are also grateful for the awards of honor bestowed on AFV that recognize our commitment to our animals and the communities we serve. AFV will continue to excel operationally and through our services while we begin the process of interviewing for a new executive director. In the interim, our staff and board are well equipped to run the shelter while this process takes place.

Neil has accepted a position as executive director, at an animal shelter up north, to be closer to family. The entire staff and AFV Board of Directors thank you, Neil, for your outstanding leadership at Animal Friends of the Valleys. We will miss you and wish you the best in your new position and future. We say good-bye to our friend. Neil will always be welcomed as part of the Animal Friends of the Valleys family! —Jeanette-Marie Bassi AFV Board of Directors

Congratulations, Officer Payne!

We are happy to intro-duce you to our newest Animal Control Officer, Cody Payne. Sworn in by Chief Middle-ton in May, Officer Payne is an Army veteran who served as a military

police sergeant out of Fort Greely, Alaska. He graduated from Murrieta High School and has degrees in business and criminal justice. But, his passion lies in animals and the prevention of animal cruelty. He would someday like to move into the State Department of Fish and Wildlife to further his career. We are fortunate to have him!

We noticed that Officer Dossett is missing from the above group photo. It appears that he was busy with other duties at the time!

It was Animal Control Appreciation Week in April, and our good friends at the Temecula Valley Woman’s Club showed their appreciation by bringing a personalized cake and a pail of goodies for each! Officers never know what to expect when they leave the shelter doors each morning and, though we don’t tell them nearly often enough, we genuinely appreciate each and every one!

And now this...Sergeant Bratten with her catch of the day. Off to Project Wildlife!

Joni Shaffer is an amazingly compassionate person who has dedicated her life to helping animals, both feathered and furry. She has volunteered with Animal Friends of the Valleys for the last nine years!

Every Saturday, rain or shine, Joni shows up at AFV’s Petco adoption events. She assists adopters with their paperwork and helps supervise the other volunteers at the show. It is safe to say that Joni’s big heart and hard work have saved hundreds of our shelter animals’ lives. She is a valuable member of our AFV family.

Come Take A Walk—With a Shelter Dog! As anyone knows who has ever had a dog in the family, dogs love walks! Shelter dogs are no different and they are so happy to get out into the great outdoors! Become a volunteer and join our dog walking program like the folks below. “The program started in January and has helped get at least 40 dogs adopted,” states Sharyl Nowicki, AFV volunteer coordinator. “The walkers help in undoing some of the undesirable behavior certain dogs come into the shelter with and so much more,” she says. All you need to do to become a dog walker is complete our online volunteer application, attend volunteer orientation, purchase a volunteer t-shirt, and attend a dog walking orientation. Ears and tails up— let’s go!

Elisa Barrios, Johnny McVay, and Shawna Garcia were out one morn-ing giving these dogs a well deserved time away from their kennels. Check out the smiles on everyone’s face, canines included!

Visiting Veterinarian Interns

It was indeed an honor to host Murat Bekhan of Turkey and Abdelrahman Moustafa of Egypt in April as part of the Humane Society International Veterinary Training Internship Program.

The program is designed to teach veterinar-ians all aspects of veterinary medicine in-cluding surgical spay/neuter, pre-and-post-op care, asep-sis and analge-sia/anesthesia

protocol in order to help raise the standard for animal welfare around the world. During their week’s stay, the interns observed various aspects of running the shelter and learned techniques from AFV clinic veterinarian Laura Paris that will help streamline their proce-dures and enable them to perform more surger-ies and help reduce pet overpopulation in their countries. We thank Humane Society International for selecting AFV as the only shelter in California to participate in this year’s program.

A Tribute to Bill Magruder, Longtime AFV Volunteer

We were sad to learn of the passing of Bill Magruder (“Mr. Bill”), our longtime greeter at the shelter. Recipient of our Legendary Volun-teer award for his 10 years of ser-vice, he always had a smile and friendly word for shelter visitors and staff alike. He will be sorely missed by every-one who knew him. Mr. Bill was truly a Friend In Deed!

Dear Animal Friends...

I adopted my dog London on March 11. She is a terrier mix and when we first got her she needed a good scrub-bing and hair cut, but was overall a sweetheart. London is now doing great! She is currently being trained and fitting in perfectly. Thank you, AFV! Geneva Briggs

BEFORE

AFTER

A Love Letter to Lola We found you three years ago at AFV. You were scared and confused. We thought we rescued you...little did we know, you rescued my daughter. She was going through her teenage angst at the time. You lifted her sadness, kissed her tears away and became her best friend. You two were inseparable. Thank you, Lola, for rescuing her and showing her unconditional love. Your best friend was at her prom last night. You watched her get ready and gave her goodbye kisses. You waited until she left and then slipped away peacefully and quietly. You waited until she left for prom, always protect-ing her until the end, not wanting to pass in front of her. Thank you, Lola, we love you.

Hello Kathy (McIntire, AFV administrative supervisor), I want to thank you for helping Olli. Your kindness and generosity made all the difference in the world to help him along. I know that without your help he would not have made it to even get the x-ray. The antibiotic and fluid bag helped turn him around. I went on the bus yester-day with Olli to the Nuevo clinic to get his x-ray. He has definite back issues with a fused disk. They gave him pain medication to take home. It is good to know this because now I know he cant jump from his favorite chair, I need to supervise and carry him… D. McKee Did you know that grants are available for senior and low income residents? The Herdina Grants is for seniors 66 years or older with an income of $1700 month or less, living in southwest Riverside County. The Dryden Grant is available for an adult living in one of the cities we serve with an income of no more than $2,000 month. Please note that grants are available only as long as funds last.

Gina Lynne Magee moved to Riverside County 20 years ago where she chose to devote her energies toward helping others. She served three terms on the Riverside County Grand Jury, in-cluding being named foreperson. She became a volunteer for the Trauma Intervention Programs (TIP) of Southwest Riverside County, first as a responder, but then as a dispatcher, a national trainer and finally the executive director for the organization. Dur-

ing this time, she served on the Riverside County Emergen-cy Medical Care Committee, received the County’s Woman of the Year Award and was appointed to the County’s Commission for Women, serving as their Vice Chair for two terms. During her time on the Grand Jury, Gina inspected an animal shelter which had been the subject of numerous complaints. As the staff led the jurors on a tour of the facility, Gina sensed that they weren’t getting the whole story and she decided to ask, “What’s behind this door?” She opened a small door that housed the facility’s water heater and, as she crouched down, she saw something move...it was a 5-month-old Jack Russell terrier in a crate behind stacks of cleaning supplies. She reached in, made contact with the animal and insisted that it be removed from the closet. Gina adopted the animal on the spot and, for the next 16 years, “Sammi” thrived in the Magee home! Since then, Gina and her husband have adopted/rescued a number of dogs and currently have two dogs from AFV: “Lilly” and “Zoey”. Being appointed to the AFV Board of Directors is a natural continuation of her public service commitment.

Meet Our Two New Board Members!

Courtney has wanted to help ani-mals as long as she can remember. From the time she was a teenager she volunteered and worked at ani-mal hospitals to gain experience in caring for pets. In 2006 Courtney earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University. A California native, she moved back to the Murrieta/Temecula area after graduation where she served as the Medical Director for the Emergency Pet Clinic for seven years. From there she founded Menifee Animal Hospital and Murrieta Animal Hospital to provide the best possible care for the pets in her community. Both hospitals work closely with AFV to provide care and services for the shelter pets. Courtney shares her home with a bloodhound, French bull-dog, and a Doberman pinscher, all of which are rescues. She is an experienced bloodhound handler and has volun-teered her time and bloodhounds to aid numerous law en-forcement agencies in criminal investigations and locating missing persons. She is excited to offer her knowledge and services to AFV by serving on the board of directors.

We were so honored to receive a Certificate of Recognition by the City of Canyon Lake in recognition of receiving the Temecula Valley Chamber of Com-merce’s Emerald Service Charitable Organization of the Year Award and the Lake Elsinore Chamber of Com-merce’s Non-Profit of the Year Award. There to accept the award on June 5 were Jeanette-Marie Bassi, AFV board member; Beth Soltysiak, AFV director of donor development; and Monique Middleton, chief animal control officer. Thank you, Canyon Lake!

Did You Know...

Not All of Our Available Animals

Are at the Shelter

Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. we hold an off site adoption show at the Murrieta Petco showcasing our fostered animals. The show is a great place to meet potential new pets because they have been living in the homes of our foster families who have gotten to know them and their personalities. The foster parents and our foster coordinator can answer your questions and help you decide

whether a particular pet is right for you. Animals scheduled to be at the adoption shows are posted on our website and Facebook page every Friday afternoon.

We also keep some of our shelter cats at local Petco stores (Temecula, Menifee, and Lake Elsinore). You can visit the cats during store hours and even adopt them there!

Let Freedom Ring! Soon we will be hearing and seeing the sound of freedom all around us. And, that is a good thing for us—but not so much for our pets. Imagine their terror when their delicate ears are bombarded with the sounds, their eyes with those scary lights in the sky, and even the smells the fireworks leave behind. The 4th of July is the shelter’s busiest time of year and this is a good time to think about how to make the 4th of July a pleasant, or at least a less scary, experience for our pets.

Make sure your pet is wearing a current ID tag at all times.

Make sure your pet’s microchip is up to date and registered. (Watch our Facebook page and website for the time and place of an upcoming microchip clinic.)

Have current photos of your pet on hand, just in case

Never leave pets unattended, even if they are in a secure yard.

Bring your pet inside when the fireworks begin (and remember that they will probably start being set off a few days before and then after the big day.)

Play music or turn on the TV—it can help drown out the scary sounds.

Exercise your pet early in the day before any activities begin.

Keep charcoal, fireworks, and sparklers away from your pet.

Enjoy the holiday and remember all the pets in shelters across the country. Do your part by spaying/neutering your pets and remind others to do the same.

Let Freedom Ring for the homeless pets, too!
