    Air Traffic

The communicationbetween air trafficcontrollers and pilots occursthrough radio but thesystem by which thiscommunication issynthesized is based oncomputers.

Computers allow air trafficcontrollers to visualize andtrack the planes in air.

    Plane mechanics

    Auto pilot, employs a

    computer.

Fly by wire tech. Signaltransferred from

    pilot/autopilot to computer

    that allows planes to

    respond to subtle

    atmospheric variables and

    make adjustments easily.

    E-LEARNING

E-learning is the computer and network-enabledtransfer of skills and knowledge

Content is delivered via the Internet, audio orvideo tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM.

It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includesmedia in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio.

FOR EXAMPLE Virtual school enables students tolog into courses anywhere there is an internetconnection. Some E-Learning environments alsotake place in a traditional classroom.

    17/31

THERE are two courses of E- LEARNING:-

Synchronous activities involve the exchange of ideasand information with one or more participants duringthe same period of time. A face to face discussion isan example of synchronous communications

In asynchronous online courses, students proceed attheir own pace. If they need to listen to a lecture asecond time, or think about a question for awhile,

they may do so without fearing that they will holdback the rest of the class

    18/31

E-learning is increasingly being utilized bystudents

    1) Who may not want to go to traditional brickand mortar schools due to severe allergies orother medical issues

    2) fear ofschool violence and school bullying

3)and students whose parents would like tohomeschool but do not feel qualified

Cyber charter schools also often are not limitedby location, income level or class size in the waybrick and mortar charter schools are.

    E-learning in corporate sector

E-Learning has now been adopted and used

by various companies to inform & educate

    both their employees and customers.

Companies with large and spread out

distribution chains use it to educate their

sales staff as to the latest product

    EDUSAT

EDUSAT is the first Indian satellite built exclusively for serving theeducational sector

It was launched on 20 September 2004 by the Indian SpaceResearch Organisation.

It is mainly intended to meet the demand for an interactive

satellite based distance education system for the country. Itstrongly reflects Indias commitment to use space technology fornational development, especially for the development of thepopulation in remote and rural locations.

EDUSAT was successfully launched into a GeosynchronousTransfer Orbit on the first operational launch of theGeosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, which flew from theFirst Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota

India's first broadband network on EDUSAT forschools - ViCTERS (Virtual Class Technology onEdusat for Rural Schools) inaugurated by Dr. A.P.JAbdul Kalam, the ex-President of India on 28 July2005 in Thiruvananthapuram has revolutionizedclassrooms through interactive IP-based technology

Besides supporting formal education, a satellitesystem can facilitate the dissemination of knowledgeto the rural and remote population about importantaspects like health, hygiene and personality

development and allow professionals to update theirknowledge base as well.

THUS THE ROLE OF COMPUTERS IN EDUCATIONSECTOR IS VERY IMPORTANT.

    TOWN PLANNING

Urban planning (urban, city, and town planning) is a technical andpolitical process concerned with the control of the use of land anddesign of the urban environment, including transportationnetworks, to guide and ensure the orderly development of

    settlements and communities.

Urban growth; unemployment ; transportation; environmentaldegradation and protection; historic preservation; provision ofopen space, parks, and recreational facilities; and conservation ofland and natural resources are examples of problems seen undertown planning

Planners are often also responsible for enforcing thechosen policies

They have always sought tools to enhance their analytical,problem-solving, and decision-making capability.

From the late 1950s planners started to develop and use

computerized models, planning information systems anddecision support systems to improve performance

Adoption ofgeographic information systems (GIS) is amore recent manifestation of the same effort toincorporate new tools and technologies.

  • 8/22/2019 Role of Computers in Public Services

    24/31

    GIS technology is most commonly

    used for

comprehensive planning (data collection, analysis, presentation etc)

    zoning

land use inventories site suitability assessments

    socio-demographic analysis, and

    generally for mapping purposes .

Planners use GIS primarily for mapping activities. Thevalue of maps in understanding and communicatingplanning issues is well recognized and appreciated.

  • 8/22/2019 Role of Computers in Public Services

    25/31

Thus GIS technology largely help in urbanplanning

but the reasons for underutilization of GIS inplanning include

    complexity of technology,

    lack of trained staff,

    scarce organizational resources,

and incompatibility of the mostly generic GIproducts with the tasks and functions

performed by urban and regional planners.THUS COMPUTERIZATION IS HELPING IN THE FIELD

    CAR Navigation

Computer technology used in land transportation today is theGlobal Positioning System, or GPS. This form of car navigation isused for everyday travel for many people. These navigation

computers are typically mounted on the dashboard of a car andfeature a screen that shows a map that tracks your vehicle'smovement via satellite signals.

Positive Train ControlPositive Train Control, referred to as PTC by the Federal RailroadAdministration, is the computer system that tracks the movementof trains on various railways around the country. PTC technology iscapable of preventing train-to-train collisions, derailments causedby excessive speed and the associated deaths or injuries.

    Mapping

Families planning road trips or truckers looking for an alternativeroute to a destination often use their home computers, laptops oreven smart phones to better understand the lay of the land.

Driving directions and corresponding maps are available fromwebsites like Yahoo!, Google and many others.

    Online Booking

Traveling by land by bus or train typically begins with onlinebooking on the computer. You can enter the date of departure andreturn and the destination, and the computer screen will displayticket prices, itineraries and offer the option to book and pay forthe trip right online with a credit card. e.g makemytrip.com

    LAW ENFORCEMENT

Computer technology has been both a bane and a benefit to lawenforcement.

Computer technology has created an entire new realm of criminalactivity for law enforcement to deal with--in the form of hackers

    and Internet predators.

Those same technical advancements have increased the powerand range of law enforcement to capture criminals.

Most police forces and government agencies are computerized

and employ some form of technology in their everyday crime-fighting.

    ONSITE

Law enforcement officers with notebook computers in their squad carscan easily access databases to check credentials of motorists andindividuals they interview at crime scenes. They can write and sendreports while the events are still fresh. Mobile electronics are used tocatalog evidence at crime scenes and to manage the evidence once it'stransferred to the police facility. Portable crime scene technology canhelp investigators identify fingerprints and other evidence on the site, allowing the officers to move quickly to apprehend the perpetrators

    Communication

Agencies utilize encrypted emails to communicate across agency lines towork together to solve crimes. Missing person reports, fugitive alertsand unsolved crimes can be posted to secure law enforcement websitesto allow international cooperation. Gang-related activity and terroristactivities can easily be broadcast to law enforcement agenciesworldwide immediately.

TRACKING :-Advanced global positioning satellite (GPS) technology hasprovided law enforcement officials with additional resources to trackand investigate criminal activity. By incorporating tower triangulation,

most cell phone users can be traced to a location that is relativelyaccurate. Vehicles equipped with GPS equipment can be tracked aslong as the device remains activated. Small GPS tracking devices canbe planted on suspects to track movements. Geographic informationsystems (GIS) are utilized to map the movements of criminals and theiractivities as well as to store the information for later use.
