The work at first glance, is perceived as a 195 x 185 x 180 cm dimensional mirror cube. After a short time, one notices that the created reflection does not correspond exactly to the reality. The installation reflects and merges the recipient, his environment and a horizontal infinite white grid together.

When approaching the installation, one notices that the four surfaces are made of semi-transparent mirrors, which allow an insight into the cube. The white illuminated hexagonal grid on the black floor is illuminated from underneath. The four inner mirror-walls reflect the grid multiple times and create thus a infinite, ab-stract space. The ideal character of that space is reinforced by the fact that the space remains inaccessible and untouchable behind the walls of glass.

The reflected grid, which forms the abstract space, leans on our orientation system. Humans dispose of brain cells that produce a hexagonal grid through which we are orientating ourselves. The work makes it plain that space is foremost a mental projection. It provides a direct sensual experience of the questions triggered by our relationship to space and our concept of it.

The serie of drawings shows a view from the top of several sequences of movements made by a person in an ideal space. They create a scheme similar to a GPS system, in which the architecture rotates around the observer (repre-sented by the central point) and not the other way around, making the visitor the constant element and not the architecture. The lines drawn with pencil show the movements of the space around the person.

The installation White Architecture No.1 consists of a white wall of light which divides the space in its length in two symmetric parts. The work refers to the wall as a classic element of architecture, in terms of percep-tion and social implications. An intermediate space is created, where unconscious behavior and cognitive patterns are revealed and transformed into reflected experience.

The drawings show a top view of several sequences of movements based on the space of the Maximilians-Forum (Munich) with the Lightinstallation White Architecture No.1. They create a scheme in which the archi-tecture rotates around the observer and not the other way around, making the visitor the constant element and not the architecture.

The sequence of movement is represented linearly on the central horizontal axis. Each mark on the line indicates the point where a rotation is taking place in the sequence of the movement. The architecture is rotated accordingly in order to correspond to the new direction of the movement. The succession of the changes of orientation in the space are numbered and underlined by the grey lines. Roland Burkart tries to find through these representations, a correlation of the movement with the resulting shape.

Volume consists of a white light cube, made out of LED and fog, which forms a space volume inside the exhibition space. The installation defines architecture as a structuring of relationships between accessible volume entities.

By entering the box the viewers find themselves standing on an illuminated hexagonal grid. The mirrored walls reflect the grid into infinity and let the dark floor vanish to transport the viewer into an almost floating condition. An endless and abstract space is created.

If the visitors move, they are inevitably referred back to their own reflections which shift simultaneously within the expanding grid. As we participate in this physical and sensory encounter, the installation subverts abstract notions of spatiality. Burkart uses the repetitive potential of the grid as orientation point to break open spatial structures and question cognitive perceptions.

The installation is based on an XY grid, which divides the garden space into twelve squares (of 4.5 x 4.5 me-ters). Six lasers are placed along the outlines. Each laser generates a light wall which is projected over the entire width (X) and length (Y) of the grid. The lasers are alternately switched on and off in short intervals, in which a laser on the X-axis is always followed by one on the Y-axis with always one laser wall visible.

When the observer relates the switched on and off light walls to each other, different rooms arise through the imagined intersections. These spaces remain in so far ideal, as they never fully materialized, it superimposes the actual appearance with an imaginary. In the continuous change of a perfect straight propagating light, this binary ON / OFF resembles the ideality of a sketch without paper. The grid as a digital system, as the

foundation of the spatial declination, becomes at last itself the object of contemplation.

The drawings show several sequences of movements in a space from the perspective of the person who is moving in it. The space represented is an architectural proposal that results from the questions: What are the key elements needed to create a space and what is needed to perceive it as such? Here Roland Burkart defines space by its boundaries (ceiling, walls and floor). In his proposal, the elements of the boundary are indicated by a single line which shows simultaneously the height and the width of the room. To reconstruct the different movement sequences, the observer has to orientate him/ herself in the created space by using that single line.
