Rock Cycle
Khaki Strebel-6th grade Main Objectives
-Students will be able to explain the rock cycle-Students will be able to identify the main types of rocks in the rock cycle.-Students will be able to give examples of each of the main types of rocks.

Rock Cycle Overview

Sediment Sediment is formed from
weather and erosion.
Sediment-small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or organisms.
![Page 4: Rock Cycle](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070423/5681672b550346895ddbc7e1/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Khaki Strebel 2009
Deposition Deposition occurs after the
sediment is formed.
Deposition-process in which sediment is laid down in new location.
![Page 5: Rock Cycle](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070423/5681672b550346895ddbc7e1/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

Cementation and Compaction Next cementation and
compaction happens. (lithification)
Cementation-the process by which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediment together.
Compaction-the process by which sediments are pressed together under their own weight.

Sedimentary Rocks Sedimentary rock- a type
of rock that forms when particles from other rocks or the remains of planets and animals are pressed and cemented together.
Examples: Sandstone Shale Conglomerate
![Page 7: Rock Cycle](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070423/5681672b550346895ddbc7e1/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Khaki Strebel 2009
Heat and pressure When heat and pressure
are applied to sedimentary rocks they form metamorphic rocks
![Page 8: Rock Cycle](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070423/5681672b550346895ddbc7e1/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Khaki Strebel 2009
Metamorphic Rock Metamorphic rock- a type
of rock that forms form an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reaction.
Examples Quartzite Gneiss Slate

Khaki Strebel 2009
Magma and Lava This causes the rocks to
melt.
![Page 10: Rock Cycle](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070423/5681672b550346895ddbc7e1/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Khaki Strebel 2009
Cooling Cooling comes after the
melting. The rate of cooling is
effected by the location of the magma/lava.
This also effects what kind of igneous rock is formed.
![Page 11: Rock Cycle](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070423/5681672b550346895ddbc7e1/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Khaki Strebel 2009
Igneous Rock Igneous rock-a type of rock
that forms from the cooling of molten rock at or below the surface.
Intrusive and extrusive Examples
Granite Obsidian Rhyolite

Khaki Strebel 2009
Review sedimentary, metamorphic,
igneous
Sedimentary-sandstone, shale, conglomerate
Metamorphic- quartzite, gneiss, slate
Igneous- granite, obsidian, rhyolite
What are the 3 types of rocks?
Can you give me any examples mentioned in this PowerPoint for each of the 3 types of rocks?
