Reducing Downtime In Robotics And Automation
Almost 85 % of Robotics and Automation “downtime” can be directly attributed to cable or hose failure.
One element in automation that has historically been overlooked is the use of specifically designed Hi Tech Cable and Hose Management Systems or “dress-out”. With the high dynamic expectations in today’s’ automated applications, manufacturers and integrators are forced to use very flexible wires, cables and hoses. This generally translates to lower tensile strengths, which now combined with repetitive flexing, plus added mechanical and torsional stresses, failures are almost always imminent.
The cost of downtime and the eventual replacement of failed cables and hoses could dramatically be reduced by the implemen-tation of an inexpensive “dress-out” system. REIKU offers easy to use “dressout” components that offer, “customer oriented system solutions” for most applications. REIKU components have been tested to withstand up to 15 million dynamic cycles.
REIKU works closely with Robotics Manufacturers to develop “customer-oriented system solutions.”

Conduit Selection
All conduits are not created equalREIKU’s patented conduit profile allows for a smaller bending radius without having the actual convolutes interfering with one another or reducing the inside diameter of the conduit. An independent detailed analysis report is available upon request com-paring REIKU’s conduit to it’s leading competitors.
Although REIKU offers 15 different choices of conduit in it’s main catalogue, the following 5 compounds are most commonly used for Robotic applications. Your conduit selection should be based on the following operating conditions:
• Temperature range of the application area• Potential chemical or solvent contact (consider clean-up e.g. paint robot)• Scope of dynamics or mobility of the application• Potential for physical contact or abrasion situations• Combined weight of conduit contents
REIKU offers 3 grades of Polyurethane conduits that are all derived from the same compound but are offered with different wall thick-ness. The thinner walled PU RR conduit was designed for extreme dynamic applications but offers a shorter potential cycle life. Medium walled PU RM and PU RV reinforced versions are less flexible but offer more cycle life or longevity.
REIKU suggests two different compounds of Nylon 12 conduits for Robotic applications. Nylon 12 conduits are considerably more robust than Polyurethane based but not quite as flexible. Nylon 12 also offers more resistance to the above-mentioned environmental influences. PA RA series conduits have been tested to withstand in excess of 15,000,000 repetitive cycles before fatiguing whereas the PA RR compound has a slightly shorter cycle-life, less flexibility but is considered to be the more durable/integral Nylon 12 compound.
Note : PA RF is also available, this is a reinforced or thicker walled PA RR.
For some applications REIKU recommends the use of Nylon 12 conduits in more static areas and then with use of a blue colored protector (PA PRB) splice into a Polyurethane con-duit for areas where there is more motion or dynamic actions. See picture.
Diameter selection should be based on the total expected cable or hose contents. REIKU conduit diameters are listed as Inside Diameter or I.D. When calculating the contents it is advisable not to consider 100 % fill of the conduit. This will avoid potential chaffing of hoses and wires inside the conduit and also allow for future hose/cable additions.
