La Lanterna. Genua speculativa
Hörspiel für drei Sprecher von Nora Gomringer
• “La Lanterna“ is a part of a larger project called Der Klang des Südens - Eine Reise durch Töne, Worte, Musik
• It is a production by Genova Music Conservatory and Goethe Institut
• Goethe Institut Genua is the Project Leader.
Der Klang des Südens
• Roberta Canu, Director of Goethe Institut Genua, who submitted the project to three different cities hosting a Goethe-Institut within the Exzellenzinitiative "Eine Reise in den Süden" at the beginning of 2010
• “Der Klang des Südens” concerns the
realization of three Hörspiele based upon original German texts and music by young composers experienced in Electroacoustic Music.
• The Project involves: – Goethe Institut: Barcelona, Genova, Lisboa – Music Institutions: ESMUC (B), Genova
Music Conservatory, MISO Music (L) – Composers: Ariadna Alsina (B), Giacomo
Lepri, Irene Pacini, Michele Pizzi, Luca Serra (students at the Scuola di Musica Elettronica) Miguel Azguime (L)
– Writers: Judith Kuckart (B), Nora Gomringer (G), Juli Zeh (L).
Der Klang des Südens
Der Klang des Südens
• The idea of the southern journey (Eine Reise in den Süden) is a topic of the German Romanticism
• In our project it has been developed starting from the Soundscape of each of the three cities involved in the project
• The suggestion for the production was the Marinetti’s definition of radio: “Wireless Imagination” (Manifesto Futurista La Radia, 1933)
• In fact, the journey we gave the chance to make to the three writers was the one we arranged for them through our Soundscapes.
Der Klang des Südens
• The soundscape was the only source of inspiration to write the texts
• Then the texts were translated in Catalan, Italian and Portuguese
• The voices of the actors, as well the Soundscape, form the basis over which the musical part of the Hörspiel is developed
• Therefore the sounds from the South reached the North becoming text and then went back to the South to turn again into sounds.
Der Klang des Südens
• Why Electroacoustic Music? • Why the radio? • The development of the Electroacoustic Music
language in Europe started within the radio: – Groupe de Recherches musicales, Paris (1948) – Westdeutschen Rundfunks, Koeln (1953) – Studio di Fonologia Musicale della RAI di Milano (1955)
• Luciano Berio Thema, Omaggio a Joyce, Visage
• Bruno Maderna Dimensioni II, Satyricon, Ages • Prix Italia: Radiodramma
• Very important is also the German avant-garde experiences with the voice and the soundscape – Sound poetry by Kurt Schwitters, Raoul Hausmann, ...
– Walter Ruttmann Wochenende.
• Genova (from the Latin word Janua Door), has been in the centuries a door connecting Europe with the different countries and cultures of the Mediterranean basin
• Genova is located in the North-West of Italy and is one of the major ports of the Mediterranean Sea
• The City has the largest historical centre in Europe (mainly medieval)
• Old Harbour was completely renovated during the Columbian Celebrations, in 1992, by the worldwide famous architect Renzo Piano.

• Genova Soundscape is mainly built on soundmarks, i.e. sounds that are particularly regarded by our community and its visitors – the harbor
– the Genoese dialect (so close to Portuguese, therefore misleading!)
– the so called crêuze (walking passages from the mountains to the sea through the typical narrow streets made by red bricks and cobblestones)
– the handicrafts (frequently encountered in town and in the inland area)
Genova Soundscape
– the local cuisine (e.g. recording of the preparation of the basil sauce, called pesto, during the Genova World Context)
– the caruggi (the noble casbah of the largest Historical Center in Europe)
– elevators and cable railways used to get around the steep roads
– the trallalero (folk music made by male choirs)
– and finally the sea.
Genova Soundscape
• Although the predominance of the sea and its trade, our region’s culture is more an Earth culture, rather than a Sea culture
• It is clear if you consider our traditional cuisine, mainly based on herbs and vegetables
Genova Soundscape
• This is why the La Lanterna Soundscape has been composed from the many recorded soundmarks according a trip comparable to the one made by Genoese people in the ancient times, from the mountains to the sea, from the North to the South.

In fact the Museum Director, Francesca Serrati, organized a 3 months exhibition with the three Hörspiele and works from MACBA (B), MNAC (L) and Villa Croce concerning the subjet of our project.
The three Hörspiele have beeen diffused at the opening over three different loudspeakers paths in the park, mixing the live and the recorded soundscapes

Then the “attentive”, radiophonic listening context was in three different rooms within the Musem.

Text by Nora Gomringer Music by Giacomo Lepri, Irene Pacini,
Michele Pizzi, Luca Serra
• The text is about a man (Henry) and a younger woman (Henny) who never meet each other within the Hörspiel
• The text alternates between letters/e-mail and Henny’s reflections on Genova • Henry is in New York, while Henny is in Genova • She is a writer, loves Henry, but does not want to have him aside as she fears to loose her inspiration • The character of Henny is rendered with two actresses to stress her double personality.

The sound effects required by Nora Gomringer are rendered using just the sounds from the soundscape e.g.: the sound of the typewriting at the beginning is a mix of sounds from an old German mechanical printing machine; for an airbrush through the hair of a woman, the sound of the stick beating olive trees is used
