Plus, I got slightly zinged when Johannes said he was doneand I was at the bottom of page four. In the last fewminutes of discussion he answered a question about a stilllife - getting one orange segment to shine out brightly.

At first he mentioned a "halo effect" at the back of anorange in a still life - the far top edge was slightly blurredabout 1/16" and bright, as if it was so bright you couldn'tfocus on it. That's an advanced technique he admired.

Then he mentioned not to put the highlight right on theedge. It works better in still lifes to move it down from theedge, still toward the top and one side but not right on the

edge. This also works with rounding clumps of tree foliage tomake them more three dimensional. I didn't know this, beendoing it with fruit for years but didn't think that yeah, worksthe same way on foliage.

Finally, to make something glow, use chroma. Use the mostsaturated color in that object and slightly mute things nearit, mute more as you move away from it in the painting. Tomake something glow, un-glow the rest. One orange

segment in Cadmium Orange will shine against abackground orange that's mixed with burnt sienna andyellow.
