TRANSCRIPT
Thank you for attending tonight’s Spring Performing Arts Show-case. This performance is not only a showcase of the finest musical tal-ents at Robert Morris University; it is a collection of exuberant bursts of camaraderie, despair, and joy. The students at Robert Morris are deeply passionate about performing. To them, making music goes beyond a physical activity or hobby. Rather, performing music enables a much-needed release from the stress of coursework, family dynamics, and com-ing of age.
The first “Act” consists of a wide range of performances of songs selected by each ensemble. Act II is the first of many performances of Broadway musicals at Robert Morris University. “Les Misérables” is presented tonight in a semi-staged concert format, without dialogue or characterizations as seen in the movie or stage production. Stage direc-tion is by Gary Baker, and choreography by our show choir leaders. The singers were asked during our rehearsal retreat to relate the story and lyr-ics of “Les Misérables” to an aspect of their life, and the responses were truly amazing. The growth of these students has been vastly greater than simply musical development. Every individual on the stage has his or her story to tell you, a story of comfort, grief, loss, victory, or heartbreak. It is my deep hope that you can hear their story, as well as feel it from their performance.
Enjoy the show.
