4 DATA COLLECTION The mobile device is placed behind the windshield facing forward with a mount. When the application is active or recording the phone must be connected to a power source at all times. Phone is aligned according to the following principles:

● Horizontally: Camera is pointed straight forward. ● Vertically: Camera is pointed straight forward, slightly towards the ground if needed. If the sky covers too large area of the frame the view becomes underexposed which is not desired.

Car hood can remain visible in camera view. The application must be running in the foreground.

Shares - A share is a workspace made accessible as specified to multiple users or organizations to enable the collection and sharing of data, alternatively referred to as a shared directory or folder.

Tags - Tags are customizable and further add organization to shares by categorizing annotations into groups for later viewing on the map user interface.

Annotations - Annotations are markers that can be created by the user which can include images, bookmarks to videos and audio/audio-to-text notes. Annotations are displayed on the map as red markers, they can be created during the recording process or after by using the map user interface.

7 POLARIZATION FILTER The polarization filter is included in the Mobile Data Collection Kit, the hardware setup for Vaisala’s RoadAI service. The purpose of the filter is to improve video quality by removing any reflections from the windshield that may interfere with the smartphone camera. After setup, the polarization filter needs to be calibrated to ensure it functions correctly. Continue to Chapter 7.2

7.1 Setup 1. The polarization filter is delivered in separate packages: one includes the clip and the other contains the lens.

2. Fasten the clip to the lens. Both components have threads, which fit together.

3. Attach the polarization filter on top of the rear smartphone camera. It is recommended that the polarization clip runs over the top edge of the phone.

4. Check for correct placement of the polarization filter. Adjust its positioning if the lens frame is blocking the camera’s view.

The polarization lens is compatible with Samsung Galaxy models: S7, S8, S9, S10e. Vaisala cannot guarantee that the polarization filter is compatible with other devices.

7.2 Calibration 1. Place a piece of white paper next to windshield under the smartphone to create a reflection for the camera to pickup.

2. Unfasten the lens incrementally, by rotating it counter- clockwise while it is attached to the smartphone, until the reflection disappears. Remove the white paper once calibration has been successful.

9 DATA TRANSFER RoadAI uploads video files and sensor data in the background. When data upload is in progress information regarding the transfer is displayed in the notification panel of the device. Closing RoadAI does not interrupt the data transfer. Transfer continues until all files have been uploaded. It is recommended to keep the device connected to a power supply during the data upload process. Data upload options: 1. Mobile network - If the device is connected to mobile network, videos are uploaded automatically. The device is simultaneously recording and uploading videos at 5 minute intervals. In order to ensure smooth uploads, the device must have at least ~1 GB of free memory. Once the videos have finished uploading, they are automatically deleted from the device. 1 hour of video equals approximately 7-9 GB, compare this figure with your mobile data plan. 2. WLAN - The other option to upload videos is through WLAN, even if the device is connected to a mobile network, mobile data can be disabled from within RoadAI’s settings. All videos are stored on the device during the recording process. It is important to ensure a memory card of the required size (128 GB recommended) is installed in the device. Once the device is connected to WLAN, videos are uploaded and deleted from the device automatically.

10 COMMON ISSUES RoadAI mobile application is not running ✔ The application is visible on the device display, can be displayed with low brightness. ✖ The application will not run if the device display has been turned off, turn on the display and open RoadAI. Device positioning on the mount is not optimal ✔ The device displays that the camera is aligned horizontally with the road with a clear view. ✖ The camera is tilted upwards, downwards, to the side, the mount or wires are in the camera’s field of view. Improper device positioning can interfere with computer vision detections and camera focus. Device charging is not connected ✔ A charging battery icon is visible in the device notification bar. ✖ An empty battery icon is visible in the device notification bar. The device must be connected to a power supply at all times, even after recording during the upload process for data transfer. Covering the device during data transfer e.g. car trunk, equipment bag, can cause data transfer speeds to diminish. Satechi media button is not connected to the device via Bluetooth ✔ A connected Bluetooth icon is visible in the device notification bar and the Satechi button is functional with RoadAI for creating annotations. ✖ An unconnected or no Bluetooth icon is visible in the notification bar, bluetooth has been turned off or the Satechi button has not been paired with the device. To pair the Satechi button with the device, press and hold the small pairing button on the back of the Satechi until a blue LED is flashing on the front side. Then to connect, turn on Bluetooth on the mobile device, scan for Bluetooth devices if necessary, connect to “Satechi media button”. Satechi is now usable with RoadAI.
