of windows, snake handling, potshots, bacon grease, illegal bus stops, immoral business practices, and peeing in the sink. If you’d seen as many backroom-dealing, wife-hugging, fake hair, three-timing, coke-sniffing, radio-bribing, carjacking, golf-cheating, mansion-buying, horse-trading, whacked-out cowboys as I have, you’d know I ain’t lyin’. I’ve always said that there are two things that cause the most grief in the world: somebody’s getting’ somethin’ I ain’t gettin’, and my God is better than your God. On a global level, that’s probably true, but country music and brain disaster are a very close third, ahead of global warming, the economy, and today’s modern radio. I’m only here to serve as an early warning system. As the tornado siren of Nashville, I’m going off at full blast just so you can’t say, “Why didn’t you warn me?” So here I am. This is your final warning. It’s singers and songwriters, publishers and managers, and record people and radio people, all interconnected like some giant dysfunctional family and all joined at the hip by their involvement one way or the other to what’s been called “America’s Music.”

of this publication. Help him get to the New York Times Best Seller list here. Country music causes brain damage. Yes, I know what you’re thinking: if this doofus can write a book, I’m certain it will prove his theory. You’re right, of course. I am, however, writing as a field observer and battle-scarred veteran of the hillbilly wars. For more than thirty-five years, I’ve been subjected to country music. I’ve been immersed in it. I am the lab rat on the other end of the mountain music ray gun. When I say brain damage, I mean the usual things that I’ve seen people do or say that leave no doubt that a steel guitar and three chords will change the cerebral makeup of a person. I’m talkin’ about lyin’ and cheatin’ and drinkin’ and smokin’ folks. And those are just the religious ones I know who listen to country music. In fact, they are usually the worst. I’m talkin’ about stealin’ ideas, fistfights , drugs, divorces, car chases, cussin’ and spittin’, not sleeping for a week, ordering mail-order chickens, dying your hair prematurely jet-black, wearin’ headgear you don’t qualify for, murder, mail fraud, wacky ‘baccy, liar’s poker, bottles of Jack Daniel’s, and pyramids of beer cans. I specifically know that this blessed genre of hick art will eventually result in shoplifting, sex in convertibles, jumping out

OFF THE RECORD: LuCy HALE

It’s no wonder this country is in trouble. Country is more popular than it’s ever been. Oh, sure, it’s inspiring and touching. It honors God and family and kids and horses and riding around in a truck. That’s all well and good. I’m just saying, from what I’ve observed with my own lyin’ eyes, there’s something going on between C &. Wand an MRI. I also want to say I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I love 98 percent of these people. Like Lot’s wife, they are the salt of the earth. The ·other 2 percent I hope are abducted by aliens and have their buttocks probed.

DMG/Bigger Picture’s Lucy Hale gives an industry spin on the artist interview:I grew up listening to WGKX/Memphis. That’s how my love of country started. The first time I heard myself on the radio happened about a week ago as I was stuck in the world’s worst traffic on the 405 in L.A. I was listening to The Highway on SiriusXM and my single

came on – I almost caused a pile up. What a cool feeling! The best part of the radio tour has been experiencing truly genuine people who love music and are extremely supportive of what I’m doing. And getting to travel around and singing every day isn’t so bad either. The scariest part at first was not knowing what to expect or how people would treat me. If I could have dinner with any person living or dead, I’d order a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich because I’d be dining with Elvis and that’s one of my favorites, too. SkyMall is definitely my inflight entertainment. I’ve never actually followed through with purchasing anything, but once I saw a mermaid tail and I wanted it. Because why not? The most redneck thing I’ve done lately was after driving all night on the bus and arriving at the hotel early in the morning. I walked in barefoot and in UT pajama pants. Ha!If I could have written any one song, it would be “Jesus Take the Wheel.” I love songs that have a few stories within them, but the same moral. This was the perfect lyric, with the perfect melody, and the perfect vocal. I’m only on level 29 on Candy Crush! Can you believe it? I’ve been playing for a month and can’t get past that level. I need more sprinkle donuts. Road essentials include peanut butter, Throat Coat Tea (a lifesaver for singers), a humidfier because the air is very dry on a bus and in hotels, and a good pillow. I’m a champion napper. If I had to be stuck somewhere other than home, it would probably be New York City because there is always an exciting energy in the air. Or Maui ... because it’s Maui.

Cromwell’s WMCI/Mattoon, IL Dir./Promotion and morning talent Renee Fonner discusses her most influential artists, concerts, songs and albums:1. George Strait, Springfield, IL, 1995: WMCI loaded up a couple of buses to the show, which was on my birthday. My morning co-host Bub McCullough had arranged a meet and greet with George for me. The entire time backstage I rocked back and

forth telling MCA’s Rob Ellis “I think I’m going to throw up.” George Strait kissed my hand and sang a few lines of “Happy Birthday” to me. Seriously? Did that really happen? Oh, I didn’t throw up on George either.2. Brad Paisley/He Didn’t Have to Be: It was released in 1999 but I’ve been living that song since 1987. I have the best dad, and he didn’t have to be. 3. Alabama, Roll On Tour, Champaign, IL, 1985: My mom got us tickets as Christmas gifts when I was a high school freshman. It was so foggy that night in Illinois that the start time got pushed back, but it was so worth the wait. Pretty sure that was the night I bought-in 100% to country music.4. Conway Twitty: I grew up being force fed country music. Looking back, I was blessed that my mom was such a country music fanatic. I appreciate so much more music because of her. Road trips with my mom now consists of her two faves: Conway and George Strait. 5. Breakfast Club Soundtrack: And of course the soundtrack to every John Hughes film. They were such a big part of my teenage years. Didn’t we all want to date Bender? Just me? My bad. •A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: The Clash, London Calling. •An album you played or listened to incessantly: My mom threatened to kick me out if I played Thriller again. •One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: A couple of weeks ago we lost St. Jude kid Cora Peters. Cora fought so hard and with such grace. She loved the song “Timber” by Pitbull featuring Kesha. I would ask you search out that song, play it as loud as you can and dance! Cora will be dancing with you! •Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: The first 45 I bought (keep in mind I was eight) was Alicia Bridges’ “I Love the Nightlife.”

Chart Chat Congrats to David Nail, Royce Risser, Van Haze, Katie Dean, Shane Allen and the MCA promotion crew on scoring this week’s No. 1 song with Nail’s “Whatever She’s Got.” The chart-topper is the first single from his upcoming album I’m A Fire.

varying popularity over the past year. “He’s looked at all these outside factors and will chart what kinds of things are important in the life of a top ten, top five and even a No. 1 song,” continues Schumacher. “He’ll be able to identify things that increase and decrease the likelihood of success.” Indie Day: Some of radio’s most successful independent owners will share their thoughts during “For The Love Of Radio.” Former Pilot Communications owner Jim Levin (who now owns stations in upstate New York), Neuhoff Media Pres./CEO Beth Neuhoff, Mt. Wilson/Los Angeles owner Saul Levine and Max Media/Norfolk VP/GM Dave Paulus comprise the panel. “Here are people that probably could’ve sold their stations, but chose to stay in the business,” explains Schumacher. “Not the Clear Channels, Cumulus’ and Entercoms, but the smaller guys. They’re going to talk about how they’re diversifying their companies, the importance of community involvement, the challenges they face and the things they have to do as smaller operators to be successful.” Budget Breaks: Schumacher will also helm a CRS mainstay, and one of the seminar’s highest rated panels. “Everybody that’s in the room for ‘Marketing On A Shoestring Budget’ gets five or six ideas that they’ve never thought of,” he says. Radio pros like WQMX/Akron Dir./Promotion/MD Jody Svoboda Wheatley, Cumulus/Nashville Sr. Acct. Exec. Becky Holt-Macko and RCA Dir./National Promotion Josh Easler will be on hand to deliver the latest bang-for-your buck marketing strategies. CRS 2014 takes place Feb. 19-21 at the Nashville Convention Center. Register for the event here; check out this year’s agenda here.
