Companies with highperformance cultures

typically deliver 2 to 3times more profitabilitycompared to companieswith non descript andmediocre culture asvarious studies haveshown. A great culturemanifests itself inenthusiastic teams, lowerattrition, more innovation, better customer service andultimately, better financialperformance. A highperformance culture can bedefined as one whereemployees look forward toMonday morning.Employees are highlymotivated and engaged anddon’t need to be micromanaged.

Most Founders buildculture intuitively based ontheir personal values andbeliefs, through theirleadership and decisionswithout consciouslythinking about it. But ifyou wish to build a highperformance culture thatupholds your legacy acrossmany generations thensome structured thinking, commitment and executionis required. Building aworld class culture startswith the founder and itdoes not cost anything. Here is a roadmap tobuilding a highperformance culture.

Step 1 : Take yourleadership team for an off-site brainstorming meetingto decide what kind of aculture is best suited foryour company. Becauseculture cannot be imposed

Building high performanceculture in Family Business

and the senior leadershipteam has to be fully onboard in the creation of thevalues and culture.Brainstorm to buildconsensus on what are yourcore values which shouldbe aligned with yourbeliefs, mission, industry. What works in the garmentindustry will not work in asteel plant. By installing aping pong table andpainting your front office inbright colours you cannotbecome Google.

Step 2 : Walk your talk: You can’t expect youremployees to upholdintegrity in all actions ifyour own behavior doesnot reflect it. Culture isbuilt mostly by how theleadership team behaves. Is‘teamwork’ best suited foryour organisation? Makesure your executive teamtruly works as a team in thetrue spirit of collaboration. Is ‘transparency’important? You and yourleaders need to be visiblytransparent — even whenit is difficult. Employeesare seeing what you do allthe time and your actionsspeak louder than your

words.Step 3 : Build culture

in all your processes. From hiring to induction topromotion policy to KRAsto training to role designyour culture should bereflected in every aspect ofyour company processes.Only then will you be ableto build a world classculture which nurturesinnovation and creativityand attract high qualityprofessionals and alsoenable you to make yourculture a powerfulcompetitive advantage. One thing common to allsuccessful familybusinesses which havemade it to the big league isthat they are managed by ateam of best in classprofessionals.

Step 4 :Communication : It isimportant that youcommunicate your valuesand culture explicitly bothinternally to employeesand externally to vendorsand business partners.Every employee from thesecurity guard to thedirector must understandand live and breathe yourculture. Rewardemployees who advanceyour culture, and be candidand honest with those whodon’t.
