Welcome to our 35th Season! Thirty-five years ago, June Goldsmith founded a concert organization which brought together friends and family to her living room, where music was performed and enjoyed in a relaxed and social atmosphere. It is important to note how innovative these morning concerts were — concert programs which repeated throughout the weekday mornings, lasting approximately an hour without intermission.

Today, we continue to grow in exciting and different ways, all rooted in the same ethos our founding community members brought to concert programming, community outreach, and the belief in the power of music. Our new evening series, Chamber Pub, is a re-take on MITM’s past Rush Hour concerts. Our deep field work involving those experiencing poverty, homelessness, and autism are planted on the foundation of work laid before. Studies now show how music can reach people in ways traditional service programs, therapy, and medicine cannot.

I am honoured to lead the enlargement of MITM’s community footprint with the help of the giants before me.

“Modern,” “dramatic,” “superb,” “wickedly atten-tive,” “with a hint of rock ‘n roll energy” are just a few ways critics describe the musical phenomenon that is the St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ). The SLSQ is renowned for the intensity of its performances, its breadth of repertoire, and its commitment to concert experiences that are at once intellectually exciting and emotionally alive.

Recent highlights include performances with Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic and Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony in John Adams’s Ab-solute Jest for string quartet and orchestra, and the European premieres of Adams’s second string quar-tet. According to The New Yorker, “...no other North American quartet plays the music of Haydn with more intelligence, expressivity, and force...”

MITM enjoys a relationship with the SLSQ that stretches back over 30 years. We are thrilled they are coming to open our celebratory 35th Anniversary Season!

JOHANNES MOSER, CELLO CHIHARU IINUMA, PIANO

German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser has per-formed with the world’s leading orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, BBC Phil-harmonic at the Proms, London Symphony, Sympho-nieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Tokyo NHK Symphony, Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras with conductors of the highest level. Throughout his career, Johannes has been committed to reaching out to all audiences, from kindergarten to college and beyond. Johannes Moser plays on an Andrea Guarneri Cello from 1694 from a private collection.

Japanese pianist Chiharu Iinuma is in high demand as a teacher, coach and ensemble pianist. A founding member of the Ridge Trio, the Chamber Ensemble Bloomington and the Duo Gillham-Iinuma, for many years she was the studio pianist for Joseph Gingold, Janos Starker, Franco Gulli, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Miriam Fried, Yuval Yaron, and James Campbell. Chiharu serves on the piano faculty of the Vancouver Academy of Music.

In a celebrated return to MITM, Johannes collaborates again with local favourite Chiharu in a program that will bring our audiences to its feet — as it did in three sold-out concerts 2018—2019 season. Subscribe to make sure you have a seat!

PAMELA FRANK, VIOLIN STEPHEN PRUTSMAN, PIANO

Pamela Frank has established an outstanding inter-national reputation across an unusually varied range of performing activity. As a soloist she has performed with leading orchestras including New York Philhar-monic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and Berlin Philharmonic. Pamela performed regularly with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, recording extensively with David Zinman. Winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize, Pamela is professor of violin at the Curtis Institute of Music.

Classical and jazz pianist/composer Stephen Prutsman began performing in his teens with art rock bands and as a regular on a nationally syndicated gospel television show before he became a medal winner at the Tchaikovsky of Moscow and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Piano Competitions. As a composer/arrang-er his music has been performed by Kronos Quartet, Tom Waits, Leon Fleisher, Dawn Upshaw, and Silk Road. Passionate for the plight of the developmen-tally disabled, Stephen co-founded the non-profit organization “Autism Fun Bay Area”.

We are thrilled to present the inimitable Pamela Frank in her MITM debut alongside an old friend and MITM favourite, Stephen Prutsman, in a program which includes Brahms’ masterpiece Sonata in A major. In addition, Stephen and Pam will also lead concerts for families touched by autism during the week.

MIRIAM KHALIL, SOPRANO KINZA TYRRELL, PIANO

Juno-nominated artist Miriam Khalil has established herself as one of Canada’s most versatile and expressive performers. She has become increasingly known for her non traditional performances of opera, art song and concert repertoire. She has sung on numerous opera stages across North America and the UK, including the renowned Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Canadian Opera Company, and the innovative Against The Grain Theatre. She is a recipient of multiple awards and grants from the George London Foundation, the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and the Met-ropolitan Opera National Council Audition Scholarships.

Kinza Tyrrell is one of Canada’s finest collaborators and has been heard on the recital stages across the country, having concertized with many renowned sing-ers including Richard Margison, Erin Wall, Benjamin Butterfield, Daniel Taylor and Measha Brueggergos-man. She made her orchestral debut with the Victoria Symphony at age twelve. The critics have called her a “sensation” with “award-winning talent”, pronouncing her playing as “brilliant” with “beautifully limpid tone colours and sparkling passagework”. Kinza’s pursuit for her love of music includes such institutions as the pres-tigious Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Musikhochschule für darstellende und Kunst in Graz, and the Merola Opera Program in San Francisco.

Miriam and Kinza both make their MITM main stage debuts. You will not want to miss this!

Described by SiriusXM as “not classical...but not not classical”, Invoke continues to successfully dodge even the most valiant attempts at genre classification. The multi-instrumental band’s other not-nots encompass traditions from across America, including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, and minimalism. Invoke weaves all of these styles together to create truly individual music, written by and for the group. Equally at home in a collaborative setting, Invoke has performed with musicians from widely varying genres, from the Ensō Quartet, to chamber rock powerhouse San Fermin, to beatboxer/rapper/spoons virtuoso Christylez Bacon.

Invoke’s two albums Souls in the Mud and Furious Creek both feature original works composed by and for the group. Their concert programs take audiences on a journey that surprises and delights.

Come hear this extremely unique and fresh multi-string quartet in their MITM debut! We are thrilled to present this forward-thinking ensemble, as well as connect them with our ever-growing footprint in the Vancouver community through several “off main-stage” concerts including our special immersive events with the autism community.

PEDJA MUZIJEVIC, PIANOMIN-JEONG KOH, VIOLINADRIAN FUNG, CELLO

JOYS AND SORROWHailed by critics for his understated elegance, wit and joyfulness, pianist Pedja Muzijevic has defined his career with creative programming, unusual combinations of new and old music, and lasting collaborations with other artists and ensembles. This is Pedja’s 2nd appearance on our stages, after an incredible solo MITM debut in 2018.

Praised for her “extreme versatility” and “simply unbeatable beauty of tone” (Berliner Zeitung), Juno-nominated Min-Jeong Koh maintains a busy schedule as a concert violinist, violist, and educator. As first violinist of the Cecilia String Quartet, Ms. Koh won First Prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition, 2nd Prize at the Osaka International Music Competition, and the Prix de la Sacem at the Bordeaux String Quartet Competition.

These two fantastic musicians will be joined by MITM Executive & Artistic Director and cellist Adrian Fung. “In the vanguard of Canadian music” (Musical America) and a “consummate interpreter of the composer’s message,” Adrian is the founding cellist of the Juno-nominated Afiara Quartet.

This program presents two of Adrian’s favourite works in the Piano Trio literature: Mendelssohn’s trio in D-minor and Canadian composer’s Marjan Mozetich’s Scales of Joys and Sorrow.

Praised for their “huge range of dynamics, massive sound and spontaneity” (American Record Guide), the Viano String Quartet won First Prize at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition and top prizes at the Osaka and Wigmore Hall Interna-tional Chamber Music Competitions. Formed in 2015 at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, where they are Ensemble in Residence, the Viano has performed with world class musicians such as pianists Emanuel Ax and Elisso Virsaladze, violist Paul Coletti, and violinist/violist Martin Beaver.
