USA Women’s Eagles lost a close contest , 13-17, to England at Surrey last Saturday in their

f inal competit ion before taking on Ireland f irst f ixture of 2014 WRWC. Eagles wil l face the

Fiona Coghlan-captained Ir ish at Stade Marcoussis just south of Greater Paris. The init ial US

match is on Friday August 1s t and the squad is now hard at work in the f inal stages of the

continuum which began shortly after the culmination of 2010 WRWC that was won by New

Zealand in London.

Any loss within 7 points must be considered to have been winnable, and with t ight victory

over Wales , 10-7 on 6.28, plus whatever happened in the closed 4-period session v England

on Tuesday, USA Coach Pete Steinberg and staff wil l have plenty of data to interpret in

order to f ield our top team against the best the world has on offer other side of the

Channel.

Pool play happens at the National Rugby Center (Centre National du Rugby ) in the vil lage of

Marcoussis some 20 miles south of the French capitol; f igure Marcoussis is to Paris as

Castle Rock is to Denver… or so. The stadium, cal led Stade Marcoussis, wil l be rampaging on

the day of play one can be certain!

Final rounds. Litt leton Collegiate Selects and High School All Stars continue to look the very

real business in their respective divis ions and the Ethan Pougnet-piloted squads wil l seed

f irst on the upcomer.

Glendale Raptors are ramping up numbers and look to be running just off Litt leton’s pace

close alongside the impressive, f leet-footed Queen City Rams; Northern Colorado, who out-

scored Denver Highlanders in a tryfest last game of the night, have come on strong with

power-running by Nick Moore and the nifty, shifty steps of newcomer onside, Juta Vakabua;

Cherry Creek XOs, Colorado Rush, Denver Harlequins, Softbal l Was Full and Tigers round out

the f ield (not necessarily in that order) of teams that wi l l be vying for the 20t h Annual Dr

Bil l Gregg Super Summer Sevens League top honors on July 16t h, Wednesday night,

beginning promptly at 5pm on The Cooker’s hot tops.

Breckenridge-to-Burnaby by bike w/ Blue Goose Rugby Clubmember , Pete Clarke Mr. Clarke cycled out of the Kingdom (of Breckenridge) on Monday last: 6.30.14

From The Ride Journal (Wednesday, July 9, 2014): “Going great, Bern; (I am) in Montana now, the 4th state of the trip; weather, riding and scenery awesome. Should be half way at the end of today. ed: Pete’s rol l ing meander nor’ by nor’west is not the most direct route to BC, but “it is a

tour not a race,” Clarke states and he has set his route to maximize panoramas, vistas and

such on the epic bike ride. Sti l l he’s averaging near 100 miles-per-day…

Diana Larson is retiring, but that doesn’t mean the longtime Black Ice Women’s Rugby Club

#10 is shy; she’s call ing t ime on a career that has seen her don select side shirts in the

three-quartersl ine, as well as operate in the crit ical pivot posit ion for the only Colorado

Women’s Division-1 side. In honor, celebration and recognition of Diana’s s ignif icant duty

for the Denver team, Black Ice is holding a “Career Appreciation Night” (CAN) at Shorty’s,

aka the Old Hole (Leetsdale and Oneida), next Friday, July 18. The action starts when you

get there or 7pm… whichever. The CAN theme has been extended to include the careers

and achievements of Ice stalwarts, Robin Smith and l i ’ l Kim Hil l , too, whose

accomplishments are spectacularly myriad.

Also Black Ice has inaugurated an elder stateswoman side - mature to the point of

tremendous! - that wil l strictly be a tournament contender where roll ing substitutions are

the preferred method of play and the act ion is suff icient unto itself. Further information

may be gotten by vis it ing Black Ice website - http://www.blackicerugby.com; or contacting

Jessica Lincoln: l [email protected]; 303.907.3406; or by coming to Diana’s Party!

Ms. Larson wi l l b e h ear ing many a goodbye on Fr iday n igh t , but what i s rea l ly mean t i s , “auf wiedersehen !”

8 the gap ‘tween Chiefs and Hurricanes , 24-16,

which made 4 match points for Aaron Cruden and company at Hamilton; the defending Super Rugby Champions ran out to a 16-6 advantage after the f irst forty on a pack try grounded by front row, Jamie Mackintosh , its conversion by the homeside’s #10 plus AC’s 3 penalty strikes v a brace of Beau Barrett sticksplitters; efforts were all but even in the second stanza for the record;

19 on account for Lions #10, Marnitz Boshoff, on 5 penalties and both trys converted, and 34-17 the victory as hosts doubled down on visit ing Rebels ; 3-2 the trys-scored count for the homeboys as #s 11, 7 and 8 tryed: Anthony Volmink, Warwick Tecklenburg and Warren Whiteley respectively, while visitors brace of groundings were dotted by #s 11 and 6, Tom Engl ish and Colby Fainga’a; ’70 minute yellow for an upper deck tackle by #8, Scott Higginbotham, no aid the travelers;

8 also the 0 match points-earned margin for darn-it-al l Blues and Crusadersin 21-13 Christchurch happiness; vis itors were up by 2, 13-11, after 40, but an unproductive second stanza for the travelers yielded naught, while homeys got their tally from 2 trys by #11, Nemani Nadolo, a conversion and penalty by start ing 10, Colin Slade, and a further sticksplitter and a deuce by replacement 10, Dan Carter - remember him? Well he’s back… some could say exactly in t ime as he replaced Mr. Slade, who suffered concussion sufficient to require he come off;

10 the margin of victory for Western Force over Reds in Perth, 30-20 ; 15 for homeboys #15, Jayden Hayward, on trios of penalties and conversions struck; trys by #s 11, 8 and 2: Nick Cummins, who’l l be sporting in Japan here pretty now-soon, Ben McCalman and also Nathan Charles whi le travelers got on with dots by the Colors debut, #13 Samu Kerevi, and one by replacement t ight 5, Albert Anae, both converted by Reds 15, Mike Harris, who added a brace of 3-pointers as well; 20s at ’68 opened up by homeboys in the f inal 10 for the necessary; 0 s ightings of Genia and Cooper again this week, which may lead one to suppose that talented pair are i l l , prepping for Rugby Championships next month or, seeking their considerable fortunes in NoHemi… or both-the-three;

16 for homeside Stormers at Newlands, whi le Bulls brought no points scorers to the match in absorbing the dank blank, 0-16 ;

1 table point only for the traveling Sharks as Cheetahs sorted the Big Fish at Free State, 27-20 ; Fast Cats 10, Johan Goosen, creased the sticks for a cool dozen on 2-and-3 from the tee with a brace of penalties and the conversion of al l three home team trys by pack numbers 6, 8 and 4: Torsten van Jaarsveld, Phil ip van der Walt and Lodewyk de Jager; while vis itors came by their numbers with a 10-er from the toe of #10, Tim Swiel, on 2-and-2, plus groundings by 9 and the replacement #2: Cobus Reinach and Bismarck du Plessis, resp.; Cats stretched a 4-point, 17-13, f irst 40 advantage to the lucky number 7 for the record, which means 2 losses running for the ocean predators; (con. next)

Nike Rugby Camps Summer Youth Rugby 15s Camps instructed by USA Eagles front row, Zach Fenoglio - [email protected] and staff

day camp: Regis Jesuit High School campus, June 23-25, 2014 overnight camp: at RJHS, July 31 - August 3

Upcomes the last weekend of league play

Friday, July 11

Blues (36) v Chiefs (40) at Eden Park: winner innit for a minute, maybe more?

Brumbies (40) v Force (40) at Canberra Stadium: for extra time! Homeys have more experience, yet travelers have hunger!

Bulls (33) v Rebels (21) at Loftus Versfeld: visitors 2014 dungeon dwellers?

Saturday, July 12

Crusaders (46) v Highlanders (42) at AMI: Dan’s back!

Reds (28) v Waratahs (53) at Suncorp: homeboys title match;

Lions (26) v Cheetahs (24) at Ell is Park: for SARC cellar;

Stormers (32) v Bulls (33) at Newlands: fire up that Hopeful Cape!

2 the margin of separation after 40 with homeside in front, 11-9, then Waratahs absolutely breached Highlanders castle keep in dotting down a handful in a dominant, second stanza performance with scores by numbers: 15, Israel Folau; 3, Sekope Kepu; 9, Nick Phipps; 4, Jacques Potgieter; and replacement three-quarters, Taqele Naiyaravoro for ult imate, 44-16 victory; f lyer Rob Horne got the home team’s f irst forty try, making for a neat half dozen, whi le visitors only dot came from replacement three-quarters l inesman, Phil Burleigh, amidst the f lurry of host , last period groundings by top-form ’Tahs ;

Hurricanes on bye, having

completed 2014 campaign

1 5 s

Page 13: Rm3r 7 10 14

As we head to the last round of league play, the only certainty is that Waratahs can

f ield a side of old grandparents (yours and mine) this upcomer and the eventual t it l ist

yet need transit New South Wales’ capitol city triumphant, or the 2014 Super Rugby

Champion must emerge therefrom; ‘Tahs are boom, boom, booming right along just

now, racking near 250 points (237) in their 6-match win streak since losing to the

rollercoaster Blues in Auckland away back at Round 11; so it ’s the Sydney franchise for

a breather until second playoff weekend; and they’l l share that t ime off with either:

Crusaders , Sharks , or even Highlanders should those ‘Landers take f ive in Christchurch

this terminal upcomer and deny any Cantabrian points, and also Sharks lose;

Crusaders get the nickel v the aforesaid Highlanders , they’ l l have a rest weekend

init ial playoff sweeps; Did someone say Dan Carter showing form once again?

If Crusaders do not win with bonus point, and Sharks f ind their teeth - you know they

got the powerful snappers - and get f ive from their match at Newlands ( in Stormers

t it le f ixture), the Durban club wil l earn respite f irst playoff round;

In order for Highlanders to take a break beyond this week, they’l l need a f ive point

victory in Christchurch, which don’t happen too often ‘ less it ’s Crusaders doing the

happening, so tough ask needless to say; if the former lose on the upcomer, they can

yet make extra t ime, but losing ain’t the proper precedent to set for them with highest

Super Rugby expectations;

What’s an almost fer-sure is that there wil l be three New Zealand clubs at extra t ime;

only way that doesn’t happen is: if Brumbies-Force contest winds up a sister-kisster

with bonus points trys in the bargain, then both those Australian clubs could represent

if Highlanders lose with no b-p; which’l l open it up for Chiefs to sl ide in should they

win (with the b-p ideally) at Eden Park this Friday;

Should Chiefs lose to Blues , and Blues win with the bonus point, then there’s sti l l a

shot, albeit a long one, to obtain playoff placement for the Auckland club; they’l l need

the bonus point at home this weekend, with a clear victor in the Brumbies-Force

derby, and they’l l want to shut down pretty much completely the Aaron Cruden-run

offense of a side with considerable after-time experience and much arti l lery with

which to obtain the f inal result;

Hurricanes are done for the season, they’re in the middle wild card frame and could

see a playoff berth if those below them do as poorly as possible and a clear winner

emerge from the pivotal Horses-Forces game, with no losing bonus points charted in

Canberra
