MCC hoststhree-dayhistorical
celebrationThe Red Flannel Festival
Board of Directors has been working diligently to providefresh new events for the 72nd“Knight & Day Red Flannels Are Here To Stay!” Festivalcelebration. “The board hasadded over 20 new events inthe last few years and boastsover 2,700 fans on our Face- book page,” said PresidentMichele Tracy-Andres. “This board is extremely dedicatedto ensuring the Red FlannelFestival the biggest and bestever! We’re already workingon plans for NEW EVENTS forthe 73rd celebration in 2012!”
There is denitely a his-
torical connection with thetheme and the Original 1939Order of Knights of the RedFlannel Drawers. Accordingto the authors of the CedarSprings Story, Sue Harrisonand Donna DeJong, the histo-ry of the Order of the Knightsof the Red Flannel Drawers isas follows:
The rst Red Flannel Day was held Nov. 11, 1939 andCarleton Cady wrote in thatissue of the Grand RapidsPress:
“Lurid lingerie adorned thelimbs of nearly every citizen.Scarlet certicates of knight-
hood were issued to mem- bers of the Order of Knightsof the Red Flannel Drawers, who proudly wore the badge, which, in miniature, repro-duced the article that on win-ter Monday’s ies from CedarSprings’ clotheslines.”
Their password was “itch”.Dr. C. W. Brayman, James H.Cook and Jack Pollock weresome of the rst membersin good standing, crowingthe rst Red Flannel Queen,Maxine Smith. We believe theminiature badges referred toare the small, red annel cut-outs you see on lapels today.
The Festival continues toexpand its advertising port-folio with the addition of sev-eral billboards to advertisethis year’s events! Again this year, the Festival has part-nered with WLAV, 96.9 FM

Will Pearsall isa blues xture onthe Jacksonville andNorthern Florida mu-sic scene. His high en-ergy, crowd pleasin’style performancescan be seen nightly atthe many clubs and local listening venues from Jack-sonville to Daytona Beach. His set list has something foreveryone including Memphis style blues standards fromthe likes of Mississippi John Hurt and Robert Johnsonto the more contemporary offerings of KebMo and TajMahal, with his own original tunes thrown in for goodmeasure.
For more than 20 years, Will was one-half of Flori -da’s legendary blues duo, The Jalapeno Brothers, play -ing over 200 shows a year. In Michigan, most rabies cases oc-cur during the summer months, so of-ficials from the Michigan Departmentsof Agriculture and Rural Development(MDARD), Community Health (MDCH)and Natural Resources (DNR) are urg-ing residents to protect themselvesand their animals against the disease.Rabies is a viral disease that can infect
mammals, it causes inflammation of thebrain and once symptoms begin there isno treatment, and it is always fatal.
“Never handle wild animals,” saidDr. Dean Sienko, MDCH Interim Chief Medical Executive. “It’s also importantto teach children to never touch unfa-miliar wild or unfamiliar domestic ani-mals.”
Any mammal is capable of being in-fected with rabies. Rodents rarely testpositive for rabies, however recently a woodchuck (a larger member of therodent family) bit a person in OaklandCounty and tested positive for rabies. This is the first time rabies has beenfound in a woodchuck in Michigan. Thebite victim received post exposure treat-
ment for rabies and is doing well. Fur-ther testing at the MDCH Lab identifiedthe rabies type as a skunk strain. Severalspecies of wild animals serve as reser-voirs for the rabies virus in the U.S. Forexample, bats throughout Michigan cantransmit rabies and counties in south-east Michigan and the Thumb harbor astrain of rabies associated with skunks.
“Any unprovoked wild mammal thathas bitten a human should be eutha-nized and submitted for rabies testing,”said Dr. Steve Schmitt, DNR State Wild-life Veterinarian. “Save bats for testingif there is even the slightest question of exposure, especially if the bat was foundin a sleeping area.”
It’s also important that residents
take steps to prevent rabies in their live-stock and pets.
“Rabies is out there and own-ers need to vaccinate their live-stock and pets – including horses– and avoid contact with wild ani-mals,” said Dr. Steve Halstead,MDARD State Veterinarian. “Skunk strain rabies can infect domesticpets and livestock following fights orother contact.”
Rabies is a virus that infects the ner- vous system of humans and other mam-mals. It is transmitted by the bite of aninfected animal, or if saliva from an in-fected animal gets onto a mucous mem- brane such as the eyes, nose, or mouth,or into a break in the skin.
Rabies is fatal if proper treatmentis not received. Preventive treatment isgiven to people who are exposed to a po-tentially rabid animal. Treatment is notnecessary if an animal tests negative forrabies.
Michigan citizens are encouraged totake the following precautions:
n Seek medical care if you are bit-ten by a wild animal. If possible, collectthe animal and consult with local health
authorities to determine if rabies testingis necessary.
n If you awaken to a bat in a room where you have been sleeping, seek medical attention. Secure the bat andconsult with local public health officialsabout the need for rabies testing. If theanimal tests negative, then rabies postexposure treatment can be avoided.
nMichigan citizens should be pro-active and have their pets and livestock vaccinated against rabies. By working with their veterinarians, pet owners cantake significant steps toward providinga safe and healthy environment for theirfamilies and animals.

Disease website at www.michigan.gov/rabies.

PRECIS SYNDICATEFamily reunion vacations can
provide unforgettable memo-ries and unique opportunitiesto grow closer to loved ones. For the planners of these events, however, they can also present achallenge when it comes to bal-ancing the family’s needs. Whenit’s time for your next trip, con-sider these expert tips designed
to guide the coordination processand even make it as stress-free asthe vacation itself:
Choose a destination —Determine the destination basedon how far you are willing to trav-el and the types of activities andattractions you are interested in.Families with smaller budgetslooking for relaxation can takea road trip to a nearby beach orlake region while families witha larger budget searching foradventure might y to Europe.Planning around prominentevents, such as food and winefestivals, is also becoming an in-creasingly popular trend.
Determine “must-haves”
and “nice-to-haves” — Work from your list of “must-haves”rst, then add amenities as muchas your budget will allow. Ocean views and access come with a big-ger price tag but aren’t necessar-ily as critical to your vacation asaccessibility for family members who may have trouble climbingstairs.
Select a type of lodging— Select the lodging type based
on your family makeup. Rentalhomes such as those on Wynd-ham Rentals.com suit larger re-unions well, especially ones withchildren, as they offer space forplay, washer/dryer access, andkitchens to help cut down on thecost of food — some even come with hotel-like amenities.
Prepare for travel abroad— Remember to notify creditcard companies, exchange mon-ey and come prepared with anemergency contact list. Be sureto also check your passport’s ex-piration date at least one month before traveling in case it’s timefor it to be renewed.
Streamline packing — Co-
ordinate with family members tolighten the load of packing by as-signing items like toiletries andstaple food items ahead of yourtrip. Creating a master scheduleof meals is also very helpful forknowing who is making whatand when.
Have fun — All planning
aside, don’t forget to enjoy thistime with your family and cap-ture the special moments. Bring your camera, videotape yourtrip, plan a fun family portraitand make an online album toshare the memories when youget home.
For a chance to make your
next trip an “Ultimate Family R eunion” or to win one of 101 vacations courtesy of Wyndham Vacation Rentals, visit www WyndhamRentals.com/Contest.The grand prize includes a one- week stay for 10 family mem- bers, worth an estimated value of

NOTICE OF ELIGIBILITY TO INCORPORATE AS
A CHARTER TOWNSHIP AND RIGHT TO REFERENDUM
Official certification has been received from the Michigan Secretary of State that the
township of Pierson Township has a population of 2,000 or more, and the township
board has the right to exercise one of three options concerning status as a charter town-
ship under the provisions of the Charter Township Act, Public Act 359 of 1947, asamended (MCL 42.3a):
1. Adopt by majority vote a resolution opposed to incorporation as a charter township.
2. Adopt by majority vote a resolution of intent to approve incorporation as a charter
township by resolution. At least 60 days after the adoption of the resolution of intent, the
township board may adopt the resolution to incorporate as a charter township.
3. Adopt by majority vote a resolution to place before the electorate at the next regular
or special township election the question of incorporation as a charter township.
If Option 2 is adopted by the township board, the citizens of the township have the right
to file a “Right to Referendum Petition.” This petition must be filed before the final adop-
tion of the resolution to incorporate as a charter township.
The petition must follow, in general form, the nominating petition form as prescribed in
the Michigan Election Law (MCL 168.488), and the heading must indicate “Disagree-
ment of Intent to Incorporate as a Charter Township.” The petition must be signed by not
less than 10% of the number of electors of the township voting for township supervisor
at the last election in which a supervisor was elected.
If the petition is successful, the question of incorporation will be placed on the ballot at
the next general or special township election.
The meeting will be held August 3rd, 2011 at 7pm at the Pierson Township Hall
21156 Cannonsville Rd. Pierson MI 49339.

Medicaid might pay Dad’s rent. So Dad, age
70, needed more care than you could give him.
Prior to 2007 Dad might have qualified forMedicaid assistance in paying his nursing home
bills under its low-income rules, without havingto sell the family home or farm or his car. Hemight have been able to keep a certain amount
of his cash and some other more minor valued
assets and still qualify for help.
He spent his own dough. First, in theory, Dad
had to spend or use up all his other assets on
his own nursing home bill. But when that ranout, Medicaid assisted. Dad got to live the dig-
nified life he deserved. The family farm was
preserved.
The feds fought it. In 1993, Federal law re-
quired each state to develop a plan to give the
Feds back the Medicaid money it spent on longterm care, from each deceased’s assets. The
federal government wanted Dad’s originally ex-empted property. Michigan’s governors foughtit. In 2007 Michigan was the last state, though
kicking and screaming, to adopt its plan. In a
nutshell for Dad, Michigan’s plan provides thatthe federal government can recover its Medic-
aid money from Dad’s estate after he dies, but
only from those of Dad’s assets (in Dad’s case, the family farm) passing to his beneficiaries
through probate (not from his life insurance orhis retirement money). Avoid probate, avoid ex-
pense-recovery. A good estate plan could avoid
probate and thus save the farm.
Does the family farm go? Michigan began itsasset recovery enforcement plan on July 1. Spe-
cifically, Michigan seeks reimbursement from
Dad’s probate assets for expenses that Medicaidpaid for any long-term care services (like nurs-
ing home expenses) for him, if he was age 55 orolder on September 30, 2007, and provided he
didn’t leave a spouse or minor/dependent childliving in the home/farm. Only by using legal
estate planning techniques like trusts and ladybird deeds to pass Dad’s property to you with-out probate, could Dad’s valued family farm
and its tradition been preserved.
OUCH! Now they want Dad’s life insurance. And now Governor Snyder’s on to Dad. At the
direction of the Governor’s office the Senate
Committee on Appropriations is currently con-sidering Senate Bills 404-406, which are gear-
ing to grab more of Dad’s assets. These Senate
bills could wipe out the farm/home exemption,impose a lien on Dad’s farm/home while he’s
alive, and grab other assets – like Dad’s life
insurance and retirement accounts – to repayMedicaid for advancing Dad money to pay his
long term care rent and expenses. Apparently
the Gov’s figured out that we know how to pre-vent so many diseases, or stave them off for
years, that most of us will spend a good partof our lives in a nursing home not knowing our
own names. He also knows we’ll all want to
save the family farm. So the Gov prefers thatDad pay his own bills, and pay them now, even
if it means losing the family farm. Apparently
the Governor thinks we should save Medicaidfor the truly poor. There’s a thought.

Healing and Health CareMany years ago Dr. Bruce Bennett from Lakeview Medical Center told me, “in the field of medicine there are healers and
there are technicians; you must learn to be both”. At the time I was not sure what he meant, but over the years it turnedout to be a great bit of insight. I have continued to study and learn in both of these areas.
Technology is the area of medicine that traditional health care has been following. Surgery, pharmacology, tests andmedical imaging have advanced tremendously in the last 30 years and costs of care have sky rocketed along with that.(Isn’t it interesting that the cost of an MRI in the US is $1700 to $2000 compared to $160 in Japan?) But in spite of thenegatives, I am still amazed every day, at the life saving things that the technology of medicine can perform.
I do not always agree with the way prescription medicines are used in this country. The drug industry has had a hugeinfluence on the education of health care providers and many times we are coached by them to try to micro manage body chemistry to create a specific outcome. In some cases that is necessary. But we have lost sight of the fact that the body canheal itself in most cases. And often we have simply accepted unwanted side effects as part of the benefit of the drug.
In natural health, we have seen a huge increase in the technology also. There are thousands of new computers, sensors, herbs, supplements, and treatment devices. Along with the new, there is a resurrection of many of the old andancient methods that still have validity. With the increased understanding of quantum physics we are now better able tounderstand what is happening with Energy Medicine.
In homeopathy, for example, the energy signature from a plant is captured by a remedy preparation and now is able tobe transferred to a person or pet to heal symptoms that match the remedy. There is no simple explanation at the presenttime for how and why this works, but I am sure it is related to quantum physics. We have seen so much success withhomeopathy, and at first, it was difficult to make the leap to use things when we really do not knowhow they work. On the other hand, I do not really know exactly how most prescription medicines work either, so maybe it is not too much of a stretch.
There are some new energy healing methods beginning to immerge onto the scene. Dr. Eric Pearlhas doing amazing energy healing work which he calls Reconnection. This is different than most of the “New Age” healing techniques and claims remarkable results.
I used to watch Dr. Bennett just sit at the bedside of a very ill patient, sometimes all night, andmany times they got better even though he really did not do anything. He never could explain it, but
would just say, “Sometimes they just needed someone there”. That seemed very strange to me asa new graduate, thinking we should cure the world with drugs and surgery. Now I understand thatthe good Doc was, in some unknown way, truly a healer, in addition to being a good technician.

AM? FM? HD? Satellite? CD? MP3?
Your customers have lots of choices when deciding
what to listen to. When you need to reach those
customers you could choose radio. But should you
choose AM, FM, HD, or Satellite? en which formatshould you choose: Adult Contemporary, Smooth
Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop, Country, Classical, News, Talk,
Urban, Oldies, Latin, Religious, or Sports? Onceyou’ve chosen the medium and the format you’ll
need to select the right stations. How many stations
do you listen to? Do your customers listen to the
same ones? Do you need a 30 or 60 second spot?
Finally, which daypart should you advertise on:morning drive, mid-day, afternoon drive, evening, or
overnight?
If this all seems a bit complicated there is an
alternative. Your free community paper reaches themost households in our area and oers two simple
options: size and color. You choose the size and color
options that work for your budget. It’s that simple.
Call us today to discuss those two options with a
professional advertising consultant. We’ll handle
everything. en you can sit back and listen to your
iPod without any distractions.

When a cou-
ple gets mar-
ried, they usually
exchange rings as a sym-
bol of their union. Wedding ring
styles can run the gamut from simple
gold bands to custom diamond creations.
Whatever the choice, whatever the price,
wedding rings have long been a part of the
celebration and there are many supersti-tions surrounding them. Following is a brief
description of some of them.
Don’t drop the ring
According to superstition, it is bad luck to drop the
ring during the wedding ceremony. Whoever does
so will be the first to die. If the ring does happen to
get dropped, neither the bride nor the groom should
pick it up. Whoever is officiating should. Supersti-
tion also has it that a wedding ring dropped in a
cemetery that rolls across a grave indicates death
– death of the bride if the grave is of a female or
death of the groom if the grave is of a male.
Wear the ring on the right finger
In most countries, wedding rings are worn on the
ring finger, or the fourth finger, of the left hand.
This stems from the ancient belief that the vein of
that particular finger on the left hand ran straight
to the heart. In other countries, the ring is worn on
the ring finger of the right hand. This stems from
the belief that the thumb and first two fingers of the
right hand are sacred to the Trinity.
Don’t take the ring off
Taking the wedding ring off could lead to loss or
damage, a sign the marriage will come to an end.Lost or damaged wedding rings should be replaced
as soon as possible and vows renewed. In some ar-
eas, it is acceptable to remove a wedding ring af-
ter the birth of the first child. Superstition also has
it that a wedding ring suspended on a lock of hair
over the womb of a pregnant woman can determine
the sex of the baby. Spinning clockwise denotes a
boy; spinning counterclockwise denotes a girl.
Other superstitions
There are many other superstitions regarding wed-
ding rings. Rubbing a wedding ring over a wart or
sty will remove it, while sleeping with a bite of
wedding cake pulled through a wedding ring will
bring dreams of the person’s future spouse. Somecouples have a faux wedding ring baked inside their
wedding cake. The guest that finds the ring will be
married with-
in the year.
Pearls are shaped
like tears, and therefore,
not a good idea for wedding
rings. Sapphires and aquamarines,
on the other hand, symbolize marital
bliss and make an excellent choice for
wedding rings.
Of course, all of these are merely supersti-
tions. Brides and grooms do lose their wed-
ding ring from time to time, and while it might lead
to some tension with their
partner, it usually does not
spell the end of their mar-
riage. It gives them the
opportunity to get a new
ring, perhaps even one
better than before. It is fun
to learn what superstitions
brides and grooms once
observed. Many seem
silly today, but that wasn’t
the case at the time.

Celebrating 32 years of serving your needs
Not so long ago when a couple announced their engagement and the bride
selected her maid of honor, the maid of honor would start planning the
bridal shower. She would invite all of the bride’s closest female friends and
family members together to toast the bride and share good times with her.
While some brides today continue this tradition, others take an alternative
route.
One of the biggest trends in bridal showers today is the couples shower in
which friends and family gather together with both the bride and the groom.
With more grooms taking an active role in the wedding planning and more
couples footing the bill for their wedding themselves, it is only natural that
some couples would want to share the shower experience. Couples showers
can be held at someone’s home or at one of the couple’s favorite venues.
For those that prefer the traditional women-only bridal shower, a hot new trend is to center it on some
activity, like bowling, making pottery, going to the spa or volunteering for an organization. This requires
less planning and provides for a fun, stress-free experience for one and all. Guests can participate in the
activity and share a meal afterwards, either at the venue or at a restaurant.
If time and budget permit, destination showers are another idea. The bride and a select group of friends
and family can take a little trip together. They can hop a plane and spend a few days at the beach or take
the train to a ski resort. The sky is the limit.
For brides that prefer to stay home, themed showers continue to be popular. Themes can run the gamut
from kitchen gadgets to entertainment to the bride’s favorite things. And because many brides are al-
ready living on their own and have the items needed to set up house, gifts can range from the unique to
the wacky.
Whatever the choice of bridal shower, anyone can host it-family, friends, even coworkers. Brides, or
couples, can have more than one shower. The bride’s mother might throw one for family and friends,
while her coworker throws one for business associates and colleagues. If the couple has a rather large
circle of family and friends, they might end up having three or four bridal showers. It all depends upon
time and preference.
The key to any good shower is to involve the bride or couple. Whoever is hosting the shower should get
the input of the bride or the couple and respect their wishes. After all, they are the guests of honor.

My, how time has flown. Seems like only yesterday you were packing up for the big
move to your house. Now your children are all grown, some with children of their own,
and the house you have cherished for so long seems big and empty. The time has come
for you to downsize.
Downsizing typically involves moving to a smaller home, which creates a number of
positives. Depending upon how much you still owe on your current house, you may
make enough of a profit to put down a substantial down payment on a smaller houseor buy it outright. Either way, you will have more cash in your pocket for other things.
With less square footage, you will have lower utility bills and make fewer purchases,
allowing you to save even more money. You will also have less to care for, easing stress
and freeing up time.
With downsizing also come some negatives, of course. You may not have the room for
out-of-town guests, much less your possessions. Chances are everything in your home
right now will not fit in your new home. If you own a lot you’re partial to, getting rid
of some of it may not be easy. Ask your family and friends to help. They might even be
willing to take some items off your hands. Wouldn’t you rather see your daughter using
your mother’s china now than making her wait until after your death? The same goes
for your phonograph. It would look lovely in your friend’s parlor, and they’re even
willing to pay you what it’s worth.
When sorting through your possessions, start in the rooms you use the least to avoid
having to walk through an obstacle course for days on end. Move from large pieces to
small and color-code everything according to whether you want to keep it, give it to a
family member or friend, donate it to charity or sell it. With heirlooms you’re handing
down, write down any significant details or memories associated with them for future
owners. With heirlooms you’re selling, bring in an expert to assess them and recom-
mend the best method of sale.
Sifting through your possessions will take time. Don’t rush the process, or you could
end up making decisions you regret. Go through everything, old cards, letters, papers
and more, and keep what’s important to you. If you’re holding onto items for yourgrown kids, don’t. Let them know what you have and find out what they want you to
do with it. Do not take it to your new home. You need all of the space there for your
own things. Give your children a time frame to retrieve the items they want or donate
them to charity.
Paring down won’t be easy, but it can be done. Be firm in what you want to keep and
bequeath items only when ready. Don’t succumb to the pressure of friends and family.
It’s your memories, so do with them as you wish. Just don’t go overboard, or you’ll
end up feeling like a can of sardines in your new home. Remember, you’re downsizing
to free up time and money and reduce stress. The more stuff you have, the less likely
that is to happen.

Your Home Never Looked So Good!
Summer Home Improvement
Love the lazy days of summer, but hate the heat? Tired of the air
conditioning running continuously? Why not install an attic fan and
give your air conditioning system a break on those cool nights?
Attic fans can make a great difference in the temperature of your
home. They pull the hot air out of your attic and the cool air in
through your windows, reducing the temperature of your home up
to 10 degrees and extending the life of your roof shingles.
Attic fans work best in regions with cooler mornings and evenings.
They are not advised for regions with heavy pollen and pollution, as
they will draw the irritants into the home. The fans are most effec-
tive in the early morning and late evening when temperatures have
dropped and may allow you to turn off the air conditioning during
those times and save a little on your utility bills.
Attic fans come in two general types: gable-mounted, which are se-cured to an outside attic wall, and floor-mounted, which are secured
to the att ic floor. Gable-mounted fans require professional installa-
tion, making them more costly, but are not nearly as noisy as floor-
mounted fans, which can be installed by most do-it-yourselfers.
Most attic fans are powered by electricity in one of two ways: direct-
drive or belt-driven. In the former, fan blades are attached directly
to the spinning shaft of the motor; in the latter, they’re turned by a
belt. Belt-driven fans cost more, but are quieter and more powerful,
durable and easily maintained than direct-drive ones.
Whatever the type of attic fan chosen, self-closing louvers must be
mounted along with it. These allow for the movement of air when
the fan is in use and keep attic dust out of the house when the fan
is not in use.
Should you decide you want an attic fan, you will have to select the
right one for your needs. The larger your home, the more powerful
fan you may need. You will also need the proper venting and may
have some electrical concerns as well. Do your homework, and if
needed, consult a professional. They should be able to advise you
on the proper fan and installation of it.
