    Newaygo CountyMental Health staff

    raises funds for localorganizations

Just before Christmas, board mem-bers and staff of Newaygo CMH sat downto enjoy a holiday lunch. This was no or-dinary lunch. Those staff and board mem- bers brought items to auction to raisefunds for TrueNorth Community Servicesand Love, Inc. The items included every-thing from cookies to a guided shing tripto a wall mirror.

The room was packed with eager bid-ders, and at times, the bidding was likewatching a tennis match. All participantshad a great time before returning to work.By the end of the fun and food, $3,000was collected which will be split betweenTrueNorth Community Services andLove, Inc.

Love, Inc., and TrueNorth providefood and other resources to many ofthe people we serve, said Mike Hamm,NCMH board chair. It was time for us togive back to help restock the depleted foodresources and other needs they meet.

We are astounded and proud of thegenerosity of our staff. They gave items, dollars, and energy all to give to thoseagencies we work so closely with on aday-to-day basis and who help those weserve. Our hope is that these dollars willhelp put more food in the cupboards andhelp the residents of Newaygo County inneed. Greg Snyder, Executive Director ofNewaygo CMH stated, Newaygo CountyMental Health wishes to thank all com-munity partners for their wonderful ser-vice to the residents of this county. Also, thank you to all those we serve for yourcontinued trust. This is a great county to

    live in and serve.

    Freedom is notfree

TO THE EDITOR:I am writing this letter to

thank all the people that havesupported me and my family andthe other families that our super-visor and his board have chosento persecute. It is nice to feel the

communitys support everywhereI go.You may recall, a month or so

ago, a letter to the editor in re-gards to property I have been us-ing to store materials on and offfor nearly 30 years. I recently pur-chased property from my father-in-law with the idea of continuingto grow my business and neitherof the past two township supervi-sors had an issue with doing this. However, my attorney has statedto me that I had a small chance ofwinning in court on Dec. 1. I have, over the past three years, tried toresolve this situation and had evenagreed to allow the township to

rezone the property any way theywanted to. Our township supervi-sor, Keith Grannis, and our thenzoning administrator, Bob Dolan, said they could do this at no costto me. They stated it would takesome time and I stated that it wasne with me as long as I am notgetting a citation. Keith assuredme in that meeting there would beno citations given and they wouldmove forward with the rezoning. Ishook both their hands and statedto them, So we are all set thenand everything is settled. Shortlyafter this meeting our townshipsupervisor, I assume he may havehad the support of the board, red

Bob Dolan and hired yet another

zoning administrator, his thirdone since taking ofce. It seems Iam not the only one who cannotget along with the supervisor.

Well, as you have read, I havereceived six citations from thetownship and was scheduled togo to court on Dec. 1, so much forthe word of the supervisor and ahandshake. If he makes a state-ment contrary to what I have

written he is an outright liar.If the judge would have ruled

in their favor, I would be forcedto pay citations and move mystockpiles to a new location. Ihave been invited to other town-ships and am strongly consider-ing these options. This would ofcourse mean more tax revenueleaving Reynolds Township. I be-lieve Reynolds Township supervi-sor, clerk and at least two boardmembers have declared war onme and my family. We have cho-sen to concede our property rightson the south side of M-82, as myattorney suggested, but I can as-sure you we will win the war in

the end, for us and others, to re-gain our personal property rights.I have spent a lot of my familysmoney trying to preserve myproperty rights, but these peoplewho think they are going to dic-tate every, single thing you can doon your own property will lose inthe end. I am considering startinga group called, Citizens for Per-sonal Property Rights.

If you are interested pleasecall my ofce at (231) 937-5014,cell (616) 813-0316 or e-mail [email protected].

    Page 8

    Refinancing or selling. Perhaps youre

planning to sell your home? February is the

best month to list your home because people

have more time to shop in the winter, and they

want to buy, close and move in before the

good summer play weather comes. They also

want to get the first crack at new listings. Or

    maybe youre considering refinancing. Now

is an excellent time to refinance. Most expertsare not expecting interest rates to drop much

more, if at all. And some think the first part of

2012 will bring small increases in most lenders

home loan rates before leveling out by summer

    again.

The necessary appraisal. If youre selling, your

buyers will probably need a home mortgage

loan for part of the purchase price. Their lender

will want an appraisal of your home showing

its worth 75-80% or more of the loan amount.

Refinancing involves the same type of appraisal.

Typically your financial institution will loan you

75% of your homes value in a refinance, 80%

in select cases of better-than-excellent credit.

You can help. The MSN networks, several

online news stations, and the realtors

associations have recently shared things you

should do before having the appraisal done,

things you can do at almost no cost, to maximize

your homes value. Im listing them in order of

    most often mentioned:

Clean inside. Clean the carpeting, wash the

crayon off the walls. Clean and wax the floors.

Dust and wax the furniture. Wash throws. Wash

comforters. Put away all clothing. Clean sinks

and toilets. No food out except that lovely bowl

of fruit on the kitchen table.

Clean outside. Remove all the plastic toys,

extra bicycles, toy wagons, dog food bowls.

Cut back tall hedges. Mow, or shovel the snow

    way back.

Clear the clutter. Put the books on their shelves,

toys in the toy boxes, shoes in the closet, toaster

in the cupboard, makeup in a drawer.

List your improvements. Make a list of all

the improvements you made. For example:

    Replaced shingles on rear side; new insulation;

    replaced toilets with water-savers everything

    youve done in 15 years.

List nearby sales. Homes sold-by-owner would

not show on the appraisers multiple listing

service. Find out what those homes sold for.

    Give the appraiser a list.

Peeling Paint. For whatever reason, peeling

paint peeves potential purchasers. Scrape it off.

Give it two new coats even just spot repair

    helps.

    Bright lights, bright rooms.Window treatments

open. Show the house in the daytime. Make sure

    all the lights work.

Working utilities. The toilets have to flush,

taps work, no drips under the sink.

Handrails. Wherever there are stairs, insideand out, appraisers expect firm handrails.

Leave. Leave the appraiser alone. Have

questions? Leave the appraiser alone. Need

information? Leave the appraiser alone. Youve

done your part Let her do hers.

One last important thing. When you receive

a buyers offer, have your lawyer look it over

before you sign it. Id say that more than

1 in 4 people will save money by getting

an experienced real estate lawyers help in

evaluating any buyers offer. Do it before you

sign, because once youve signed, theres no

    going back.--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Kent Theatre will play host to a student written and directed playby the talented Tri County senior, Shayna Gross, in collaboration with theTri County Theatre Group. Her clever comedy is titled "Two Idiots and aCheat."

Both Shayna Gross, the Kent Theatre and the Tri County Theatre Grouphave worked together for the past four years to present performances ofhorror, family comedy, British Classics and now a sure fire hit, a politicalsatire, targeting the foibles and follies of those seeking office. Each scenepresents the characters in a light in which they need display their charm andwit, which may or may not add a positive tone to their political aspirations.Nevertheless, they never fail to amuse. Even if politics puts a pit yourstomach, Shayna Gross' quick-witted humor will surely fill it with laughter. The performance dates & times: January 19, 20 and 21: 7:00 p.m. There willalso be a matinee performance January 21 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $5 withstudent identification and $10 for all other seats.
