bulbs. We also use vegetable oil based inks, lowVOC solvents and alcohol free fountain solutions in the

press room. Through October 2010, MultiAd has recycled860,467 pounds of paper which translates to saving: 7,314trees, 3,011,610 gallons of water, 163,487 gallons of oil,1,291 cubic yards of landfill space, 1,720,920 kilowatthours and 25,814 pounds of air pollutants. As your Chairman, I expect this year to be anoutstanding year as we have assembled a dynamicgroup of committee chairs committed to improving theeconomy of the River Parishes and addressing yourneeds. Public Policy will be focusing on federal as wellas state and local legislative issues to improve thebusiness climate in the River Region.

Business Development will be working with theparishes’ economic development offices in their questto help existing businesses grow, as well as attract newbusinesses. INTRODUCTIONCOMMUNITY

The River Region is comprised of threeLouisiana parishes—St. James, St. John theBaptist and St. Charles—which are each cut inhalf horizontally by the Mississippi River andare surrounded by Lake Maurepas, Lake

Pontchartrain, Lake Cataouatche, Lake Salvador and LacDes Allemands. With a combined land area ofapproximately 749 square miles and a total population of119,751, this vast area is filled with opportunities foroutdoor recreation, solid business ventures and plenty todo for locals and visitors alike.

J A M E SSt. James Parish is strategically located midway betweenthe metro epicenters of Baton Rouge and New Orleans.Its population is 22,102 (a total of a four percent increasefrom 21,216 in 2000)—the smallest of the three parishesin terms of population and population density, but in landmeasurements, it is the second largest of the parishes at246 square miles. Over half of the parish is covered bywetlands; despite this, the parish is home to twoincorporated towns, Lutcher and Gramercy, but the vastmajority of the parish’s population lives in theunincorporated communities of Convent (the parishseat), Vacherie, Romeville, Paulina, Hester, Welcome, St.James and Union. St. James’s climate is subtropical;winter temperatures rarely reach below an average of 60degrees Fahrenheit, with snow and ice extremely rare.

S T . J O H N T H E B A P T I S TSt. John the Baptist Parish, only 25 minutes west of NewOrleans, is in the heart of Louisiana’s sugarcane industrybetween Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The parish is219 square miles and has a population of 49,800, which isthe second largest of the River Parishes in population. St.John the Baptist Parish consists of Edgard, Wallace, Lucy,Mt. Airy, Garyville, Reserve and LaPlace. There are noincorporated towns in St. John the Baptist Parish. Theclimate is subtropical with precipitation levels atapproximately 54 inches per year.



S T . C H A R L E SSt. Charles Parish is approximately 25 miles west of theCity of New Orleans and stands as one of the nineparishes that make up the Metropolitan New OrleansArea. The parish has the largest population of the threeRiver Region Parishes at 52,780 and the largest squaremileage at 284 square miles. The towns that are foundwithin the parish include Ama, Bayou Gauche, Boutte,Des Allemands, Hahnville, Killona, Luling, Montz, NewSarpy, Norco, Paradis, St. Rose, Taft and Destrehan. St.Charles’s climate more closely resembles the traditionalfour-season climate with noticeable fall and springclimate changes, but snow and ice are still extremely rare.

HISTORY

The parishes of St. James, St. John the Baptistand St. Charles, as well as the State ofLouisiana itself, have quite a unique storybehind their creations. According to historicrecords, one of the first Europeans to arrive in

this area was Spanish explorer Hernando de Sotosometime in the early 1540s. Later, the region wasclaimed by French adventurer Sieru de la Salle, naming it“Louisiana” in honor of then-reigning French King LouisXIV.

The land changed hands, from France to Spain, in 1762.At the same time, the area welcomed the first Acadianexiles (descendents of 17th century French colonists whowere forced out of the current-day Canadian provinces ofNova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island).Rule of the territory continued to bounce between Spain,France and Britain, and was officially returned to Franceby Spain in 1800 through the secret Treaty of SanIldefonso.

In 1803, the United States purchased the territory ofLouisiana from Napolean for $15 million, and, by 1807,established 12 counties – which would later be divided

into 19 original parishes, including St. James, St. John theBaptist and St. Charles Parishes. Louisiana was grantedstatehood in 1812.

The three River Region Parishes were around long beforetheir official creation. St. James made up a portion of the“Comte’ d’Acadie” (County of Acadia), which includedthe old ecclesiastical parishes of St. James and “TheAscension” – also referred to as the First and SecondAcadian Coasts. St. John the Baptist and St. CharlesParishes were originally part of the area once known as“La Cote des Allemands” (The German Coast), whichwas settled by German pioneers in the early 1720s. Thetwo parishes share a very similar history as a result of thefusion of German and French cultures in the region earlyon in their settlement.

Local history and the unique culture that has arisen fromthat history is celebrated regularly at various annualfestivals throughout the River Region. Several well-preserved plantations also remain standing, invitingguests to tour the grounds and immerse themselves in therich past of this distinct southeast Louisiana region.



LOCATION &

TRANSPORTATION

Skipping around from parish to parishor even leaving the state is easy inthe River Region. A number ofinterstates provide efficienttransportation in and around the

parishes, including I-10, I-55 and I-310. StateHighways 44, 18, 3125 and 3127 also servicethe region, as well as U.S. Highways 51, 61and 90, and Louisiana Highway 48.

For air travel, passengers can seek flights fromthe New Orleans International Airport, or forcorporate/private aviation, St. John ParishGeneral Aviation Airport. A number of freightrails service the area, and the Reserve/EdgardFerry carries passengers across the MississippiRiver, making nothing out of reach in thissoutheastern section of Louisiana.

For the theatre enthusiast, plan a night out at St. JohnTheatre in Reserve. Originally built in 1918, the LibertyTheater was the movie palace of St. John Parish. Afterbeing destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt as Maurin's Theaterby Louis J. Maurin, Sr. The admission of 25 cents is stillremembered and many fond stories are recounted bylocal residents. The last movie was shown in 1979, butthe building did not remain dark for long. In 1981, St.John the Baptist Parish purchased the building from theMaurin family. Jack S. Snowdy led a group known as theSt. John Community Theatre that introduced livecommunity theater to the River Parishes. Thirty-oneyears later, the vision of both Mr. Maurin and Mr.Snowdy continues as St. John Theatre is proud toproduce quality, family entertainment.

St. John Theatre is a short 30-minute drive from NewOrleans or Baton Rouge, and offers vendors a beautifulvenue with outstanding lighting and sound systems.Several local high schools, as well as dance studios call ithome for their yearly productions.
