  • A riteofpassageis a ceremony and marks the transition from one phaseoflife to another. Rites of passage are a category of rituals that mark the passage of a person through the life cycle, from one stage to another over time, from one role or social position to another, integrating the human and cultural experiences with biological destiny: birth, reproduction, and death.

  • Three phases:1. SeparationIn the separation phase, the adolescent is taken away from his/her familiar environment and enters into a very different and sometimes foreign routine (camp or other village).

They are forced to adjust to their new surroundings. Its a loss of identity, often abrupt in nature that ruptures ties to family, self and community. It often involves alienation or movement across boundaries.

  • Individual is separated from familiar environment.

  • The time that the adolescent learns the appropriate behavior for the new stage they are preparing for (adulthood). Its the in-between time where the adolescent has his/her old identity, but has not yet developed a new identity.2. Transition/ Liminal stage

  • 3. Incorporation/Post-liminal

The final stage where the transitioned adolescents (now adults) move from isolation and are inserted back into the community with a new identity (adulthood). They are now equipped with the moral, traditional, spiritual, cultural and societal values taught and instilled during this process.
