A service to the students of Rhode Island School of Design ~
To restate our purpose: EVENTS has been established as a service to the student population in RISD. Receiving funds from student fees as appropriated by the Student Board , and with a grant from the Student Affairs Office, it is published by an independent staff. Taking the form of a bi-weekly calendar and
special larger issues, it includes schedules of entertainment, lectures and club activities within the school and the local community. In addition to the calendar of daily events, informational articles will highlight specific happenings and the work being done in the academic departments within the school.
Still, the way in which we present this information is changing. The staff too, is changing. Sincere thanks and gratitude are extended to everyone who has passed through this office- especially to Liz Small, who has resigned her position as Graphic Editor. Without Liz,

we would never have gotten off the ground this year. We hope to continue with Linda Cornacchione as the new Graphic Editor. Linda brings with her a new title block and format.
In the true spirit of an art school, we are trying to include even more student artwork. Don't be surprized if we accost you on the street and ask for a submission. We don't like to use force so send information, photos, illustrations and classified ads with your name and box number to EVENTS c/o SAO.

Students can also receive counseling from George over the phone at any time by calling 272-9247.
WHAT CAN BE EDITED? WE NE ED STUDENTS' OPINIONS!
The student Affairs Office is revising RISD's student handbook—the Companion. Due to increasing printing costs, the Companion will have to be edited. What information is most useful to students? What information can be eliminated?
Students having ideas on how the content can be improved or condensed are urged to get your ideas to the SAO office or call Johnette Isham, ext. 230.
CAREER SERVICES
The purpose of the RISD Career Services Office is to help underclassmen, grad students and alumni determine career objectives and pursue job referrals. The office, located on the second level of Woods-Gerry House, is responsible for internships, career seminars, business workshops, recruiting schedules and over a thousand full-time job openings.
Undergraduates use the Office or part-time jobs., which may range from painting signs to sculpturing in ice, and for summer jobs, ranging from camp counseling to running a gallery. In the latter the demand may exceed the supply because of the number of college students looking for work during June, July and August, but to assist these applicants, there is a Summer Employment Directory, the summer job notebook, summer study bulletins, and work-study aboard programs. Those who seek free-lance or summer work should come to the Office, fill out an application, review the job listings and pursue commensurate openings.
For seniors, super seniors, and second year graduate students, the Office is the link between classes and the market place. Each person is invited to have an individual interview at which time immediate plans and long-term goals are discussed as well as the importance of portfolios, the purpose of letters of application, the

function of resumes, and the approach to job interviewing.
During an academic year about 600 registrants become active candidates for their first position or for a new position. They are urged to register so that their credentials may be assembled and updated. Most candidates receive professional counsel and notification of position openings based on an analysis of their qualifications. To apprise students of job openings, notices by way of "please come cards" are sent to their mail boxes and the Placement News, an office publication, is printed bi-monthly.
The office is a repository for biographical data and references(together called credentials) on about 2,500 persons, including the present graduating calss and former graduates. These files constitute valuable information and offer prospective employers (upon written request of the candidate) the possibility for objective evaluation for specific positions. Through
interviews, correspondence, and representation at conferences, the director maintains associations with prospective employers in industry, business, goverment, school systems, special projects and college and universities throughout the Country. Carolyn Hawes Director of Career Services.
