Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd has become the first integrated steel plant in the country received the ISO 9002 certificate for its 50 departments four regional offices 20 branch offices and 22 stock yards.

The company has developed its market in the southern India. The company has already established markets in USA, Australia, China and Taiwan.

COST REDUCTION MEASURES

•Utilization of LD slag in Sinter Plant (SP), Blast Furnace (BF) and Steel Melt Shop (SMS) to reduce consumption of Limestone

• Reclamation of scrap from maintenance activities and use in SMS

•Metallurgical wastes used in place of Iron ore fines at SP

• Improvement in ladle and tundish life

• Conservation of water, power etc.

In line with its commitment to make steel available to rural areas at affordable prices, additional 77 No.s of District Level Dealers were appointed by the company during 2007-08, taking the total to 141 Nos in the country. Segment wise growth in rural marketing

EMPLOYEE INVOLVEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

•Voluntary involvement of employees in 4207 Quality Circle projects gainst a plan of 3,750, during 2007-08, thereby effecting savings of Rs 1,900 Lakhs

•A total of 7,200 employees were trained under these programmes at an average of two mandays/employee the training effectiveness index stood at 3.89 on a five (5) point scale for the current year.

•Safety and health of employees has always been the prime concern in the plant,

•Modern equipment like Hysteroscope, Phacoemulsifier, four channel coagulometer, computerized on-line X-ray etc. Extension of computerization to in-patient services in the second phase. In-house developed system for OHS&RC

Technological upgradation

•Capital repairs of BF- 1 & 2, Combined blowing facilities in converters, Modernization and automation of CCM-2, Pulverized coal injection in BF-1 & 2 along with upgradation of oxygen making facilities (ASP), Upgradation of control and instrumentation of three turbo generators and 5 boilers of captive power plant.

•Expansion of plant to 6.3 million tonnes of liquid steel from 3.6 million tonnes and
