The Festival ExperienceKooralbyn Kollective - Homespun Bazaar - Part 1The idea of bringing a community together over a community market, with a bit of background music thrown in seemed like an attainable challenge to Kooralbyn Kollective. It was the monster festival that Homespun Bazaar has become, which is proving to be an incredible mountain to climb. Even Everest has been conquered
Photos by Reneé Barlow
though, and the organisers of this small-town event are bringing people together, to make something great for the people of Kooralbyn.
The town of Kooralbyn, in the Scenic Rim area of South-East Queensland, is one of those little towns which largely goes unnoticed. This wasn’t always the case though, with its vast resort buildings and grounds still prominent features of the town. Today, these are all closed down, and the few community resources that exist go largely unused. One of these is the large community centre and grounds which were the inspiration for Homespun Bazaar.
The Scenic Rim area is home to a vast array of produce, artists and crafters over a whole range of disciplines. With a large area to cover, it takes a bit of effort to bring these talents together. As in much of regional Australia, original music finds it hard to get a hearing in the area. When the organisers of Homespun Bazaar sought to Kooralbyn Community Centre
PAGE 4
bring the two realms together, a bit of magic happened.
When music industry folk from Brisbane were told about the event, it didn’t take long for the excitement to build. The enthusiasm of the bands involved was great enough to spur on the Kooralbyn Kollective to put serious efforts in and make Homespun Bazaar an event to be remembered. Before too long, a host of bands were involved, and stages were filled both indoors and out in the grounds amongst the gumtrees.
With a fully fledged music festival in the works, the stallholders saw a point of difference and the excitement started to build even more. The stalls have started to fill and there’s more coming on a daily basis.
Homespun Bazaar is a work in progress. Here’s a view of just some of the musical acts and vendors who will be joining in the fun and excitement. There’s still space for more, and there’s room for sponsors to help make the event something great (hint, hint). There’s more to come in next months’ issue but for now you can get all the info on the event at www.homespunbazaar.com.

F l a v o u rKiss of Life - Eat @ 131When you visit a small town, chances are there’s a local takeaway to check out. It’s amazing how some places you’d never think to visit might have amazing chips, the best fish, or a burger patty that makes you drool. Either that, or you can reminisce about just how bad they can be.
Kooralbyn is one of those towns that you could definitely call out of the way. Its reputation tends to precede, since it is well known for the resort and renowned golf course which used to be its main feature. Now though, many don’t really know what that wall on the Mt Lindsay Highway saying Kooralbyn Valley really stands for. With Andy and Toni - owners of the amazing Valley Kitchen cafe restaurant teaming up with Justin Clee and Sarah Brown to open Eat @ 131, the answer is quickly becoming food, which is on par with the incredible quality of the scenery.
While they’ve only been open a few weeks, the locals already have their favourites. They’re still tweaking and refining both the menu and ingredients, but they seem to be on to a winner. The handmade potato scollops are clearly a hit, with orders coming in by the dozen.
The decor is beautifully rustic, and the welcome warm

and friendly. The locals are usually up for a chat, and love to share their wonderful part of the world. All in all, it’s just nice to have somewhere you can go, when you don’t feel like having to cook. It’s even better to know that it’s a place where every item on the menu is tasty.

SoundboardLachy LyneIf there’s one thing that’s needed to get you through in the music industry, it’s dedication. Lachy Lyne has it in spades, and he’s using that quality to not only promote his original, talent-laden music, but support communities in both his own area and others.
Lachy sees his role as more than just entertainer. The emotion that comes along with his evocative songwriting, lends itself to a shared experience with his audience. He sees that ability to lighten up someone’s day or give them focus to have a cry as an important factor in what he does. Seeing him perform can inspire others to do what they love, and he also recognises this as part of his strength.
In his local community of Laidley, Queensland, Lachy is an active support. He runs lessons for guitar and drums as

well as being involved in shows with other artists for the area. Outside of music, he works with youth groups and gets involved in various events and functions.
Lachy’s originals are a defining feature of his set, but he enjoys playing a few covers amongst them. He puts his own spin on them and shines new light on the songs he chooses to cover.
Twenty-first century technology brings a plethroa of ways to reach an audience with music, and Lachy takes advantage of them all. As well as playing as many shows as he can get his hands on, he has an EP out on bandcamp. He has also found the niche of web-based chat sites which allow people to share their music. Who knows what people you might come across with a random internet audience.
The decline in audience numbers at gigs is evident to Lachy Lyne. He sees this as an opposing force to the great number of “insanely talented acts” playing and trying to make their music heard. More accessible festivals and shows is what he thinks will help live music in regional areas, even if artists have to make it happen for themselves.
Lachy gets a lot of positive feedback on his work. It brings a positive energy, whether in the city or a regional town.

Art & SoulThe Wild Life - Diane GoughDiane Gough has been painting since her early teens. She has always painted dogs and other animals and since moving to Australia 24 years ago, she has started painting the wonderful array of the country’s bird and animal life.
While Diane might not be as well known as others, she does see that her art helps others appreciate the animal and birdlife around us. She does have a following in many countries but mostly works within her local community.
Diane Gough supports the community through her art, donating work to charities for various raffles. She also endeavours to shop local, and donate to local charities and services wherever possible to provide support outside her artistic scope.
She believes in painting from the heart, as well as studying her subjects closely. “The eyes ARE the window to the soul”, and her images certainly present themselves in a soulful manner.
Diane’s work can be seen in markets around the Scenic Rim area. She is also shown in two stores. Diane gives thanks to Tanya and Angela of Two Create in Aratula, and Lana of Woodland Fairies in Boonah for supporting and showing her work.
PAGE 24
Getting out there and giving it a go is Diane’s attitude to bringing more art to life in regional Australia. Additional rural galleries with an emphasis on new artists would also assist into boosting the profile of emerging talent.
Diane finds that her work makes people smile, and stop to have a chat. She has a broad audience, with thumbs up even from passing teens. She is self-taught and believes in painting what your’re interested in when learning. “The same principles apply and you will always learn more and enjoy it”

Special FeatureThere’s no doubt that community spriit is alive and well at Pulpitation Studios. When Rimshot Magazine put word out that they were looking for a sponsor to help with the costs of creating the publication, the studio jumped right on board. Of course, we had to check them out, and what we found was a great setup, a welcoming environment, and friendly people to spend some time hanging out with around the studio.Owner Chris is dedicated to giving the best he can from his studio’s experience, whether that be with recording or using it as a rehearsal space. He believes the best performances are achieved when you can make the musicians feel relaxed and comfortable in the studio’s atmosphere.

Pulpitation Studios strives to provide that personal and comfortable environment for bands and artists of any musical styles. Their work within the community includes support of local event promoters with studio time giveaways and they enjoy discussing anything musical and beyond with everyone who comes to visit (our chat may have included a bit of microphone admiration... ed). They are a continual work in progress, as any studio will be. They’re working on improving the live room and isolation booths with many changes still to come. Their fitout includes some beautifully sounding focusrite preamps, and they record with Pro Tools software. The studio is keen to help wherever they can, and for southsiders of Brisbane, it’s in a great spot. For rural South-East Queensland, it’s fantastic to have a studio outside Brisbane or Gold Coast cities that lives up to the same standards, as well as being active in the community.
