Dog Training Experience?

teach them how to train their dogs using positive reinforcement training methods. Practices are held weekly on
Wednesday evenings, 6:45-8:30 p.m. in Pottorf Hall, mid-September through the end of November and mid-

Help us Out!
Currently our Riley County 4-H program is looking for someone to assist with our monthly sewing SPIN club.
This person should have some experience in the field and be willing to help with whatever is needed during the
meeting times. In addition, we are seeking someone willing to make around 10-15 small wooden award-
tokens, to be presented after our 2015 48 Hours of 4-H 5K. If you or someone you know might be interested
in either of these opportunities, please contact Mr. Jobe at the Riley County Extension office.

Inspire the Next Generation
Do you have a hobby or passion you would be willing to share with Riley County youth?
We would love to take your skill-set and teach it to a group of local 4-Hers. Hands-on
experiential learning is the heart of 4-H youth development. We want to make sure these
types of experiences are accessible to all our community youth. We will be offering a series
of project days throughout the 2015-2016 school year in the after school and weekend setting. We would love
for you to join us in this process by working along side an Extension Agent, as well as other volunteers. No
matter what your passion may be, we can turn it into an exciting and educational experience for the youth
involved. Contact Mr. Jobe at the Riley County Extension Office with your ideas and we will work together to
make your passion a life changing lesson for a local youth.
Meetings Matter
Club meetings are a place for friendship, fellowship, planning, and ultimately
business. Many clubs incorporate exciting and entertaining activities into each
club meeting with the addition of project talks and recreation. Incorporating
‘fun’ into each meeting is just as important to the 4-H members as it is to the
parents who attend meetings, and can really be an uplifting experience for
everyone. Because there are other important aspects to a club meeting it’s crucial to limit these activities to
around 15 minutes or less. Remember that club meetings are one of the first things that new families
experience when they come into the 4-H program. Are your club meetings an event someone would want to
bring their child back to time and time again? If your club is needing new and fresh idea on taking club
meetings to the next level, I would love to help you. I would love to brainstorm ideas with club leaders, or
even come out to a club meeting and provide a 15 minute educational activity. If you are interested please
email me at [email protected] or call the extension office and I’ll get your club meeting on the calendar. I look
forward to coming out and challenging both 4-H members and parents.
4-H Club Leader Information
4 - H Co u nc i l In s a n d O u t s
4-H Council is the Riley County entity that plans county event such as Gavel Games, Club Day, Fashion
Revue, Pop Stand, County Fair, Achievement Celebration and others with representation from Riley County
4-H community clubs. Here are some things to keep in mind about 4-H Council:
Each community club is allowed to have 5 voting representatives; 3 youth and 2 adults. It works best if
these representatives are elected or appointed at the club level, since some 4-H Council work involves
committees. A list of your club’s representatives are due to the office by November 3rd.
Six meetings are held per year. Meetings are held bi-monthly. A list of next year’s 4-H Council
meetings is below.
4-H Council representatives should sign the roll sheet prior to the start of each meeting. Voting
representatives should also pick up a voting card. Most representatives tend to sit with their club to aid in
discussion of business items.
Committees will meet during each 4-H Council Meeting. Club members are invited to participate on these
county-wide committees, but are welcome to leave after the committee meeting, if they are not 4-H
Council representatives.
Each committee will have 2 Adult Advisors. Adults will attend the meetings.
4-H Council meetings tend to last 60 minutes.
All meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and are at Pottorf Hall.
2015-2016 4-H Council Meetings: Monday, August 31, 2015; Monday, November 2, 2015; Monday,
January 4, 2016; Monday, March 7, 2016; Monday, May 2, 2016; Monday, July 11, 2016.

Talk it Up During the firs few months of school, parents are beginning to look for activities and programs to get their
children involved in. Spread the word about the amazing opportunities available through 4-H here in riley
County. Also, this is the time of year to be thinking about how your club will be welcoming and retaining
new families. One of the easiest ways to make this happen is to simply make yourself available to answer
questions about how 4-H works throughout the year, as the process can be overwhelming to new families.
National 4-H Week
As National 4-H week approaches, October 4-10, it’s a great idea for Club Leaders to start speaking with
members and their families about possible activities. A fundamental purpose of the 4-H Program is to
highlight our program’s success and especially the youth that are involved in it. Each year, during the
National 4-H Week, the local and county 4-H clubs/groups have the opportunity to showcase what they have
gained from their membership in 4-H through activities and events at the local and county level.
A note from John
If your club is celebrating a special event, gearing up for an exciting activity, or simply wants to let others
know what they are up to, please let me know what I can do to help or advertise the occasion. You might find
that other community clubs are interested in collaborating with you or would like to share ideas about what
they have done in the past. After all, between all our clubs we have 100’s of years of experience with 4-H
programming and leadership

4-H Displays at 48 4-H
As previously mentioned, Riley County will be hosting a 5K, Run, Walk, Fun-Run, and Bike event on
October 11th starting at 2:00 pm out at Cico Park. We are looking for clubs or club members to come out to
the event as early as 12:30 to showcase one or more of your projects. We would love to see several of the
projects you brought to the county or state fair. We would ask that you stay on hand for the duration of the
event to answer any question people might have. In addition, we encourage clubs to put together a small
display representing your club and some of the activities you have been involved with in the past year. If
interested in this opportunity, please contact Mr. Jobe at the Riley County Extension office 785-537-6350 or
email [email protected].
Volunteer Screening
Starting immediately, incoming volunteers will no longer be required to submit references to the county
office. We will still require all volunteers to complete the volunteer application, online criminal background
check, and the child abuse and neglect registry. This is a state-wide initiative aimed at streamlining the
volunteer process. Volunteer applications will still be reviewed by a Riley County Extension Board approved
committee of community partners. The Riley County Extension Board still retains the right to decline any one
volunteer application based on information acquired for the local Extension office or the State 4-H office.
Thank you for your patience during the changes to this ongoing process.
